Anyone know what the difference between the current Digital Video Essentials HD HD DVD title and the upcoming DVE: HD Basics title is?

I'd also like to know what, if anything, is different in this new release.

Joe Kane, President of Joe Kane Productions and creator of HD Basics, notes, “My goal with DVE: HD Basics is to help make display device setup easier plus describe what I think consumers should expect from high definition. It’s really a great system and not everyone is seeing it for what it’s worth. This new disc allows users to choose the depth at which they want to learn about High Definition – or simply begin with calibrating their set. While this is not a watered-down version of DVE, I do feel that entry-level support is just as important as providing details for the more experienced users. The HD Basics program provides more tools and information than any prior consumer version DVE, but it is indexed in a way that lets you easily access what you need, when you need it.”

I believe it will have everything the current HD DVE has but with a different Menu Structure that will help less experienced users.

Maybe they'll get it right this time. The first HD DVD version of VE was a disaster from a usability/interface standpoint.

If we learned anything about the past releases, it's probably shipping in 2009 :D

Odd, I find the interface of DVE HD dVD to be just fine. Not perfect, but nothing is. Just wish for chapter skipping ability ... but hardly a disaster.

After initially looking like the worst navigation menu system I ever saw, after I got use to it, I could get anywhere within seconds afterwards. It actually makes perfect sense in a geeky kind of way.

Is there really even a need for a HD DVE? Its only the res thats diffrent, colors/brightness/contrast ect should not be different.
Iv just done some basic calibration with Avia SD DVD, color/contrast/brightness and its done wonders :)

There is a need since settings do not always match on the SD side and the HD side. TV's are not perfect.

Besides the res difference - there is a difference in the Color Gamut between SD and HD. SD= Ref. 601 while HD= Ref. 709.

The change results in more accurate renditions of each of the colors.

Red is Red . . . Not Redissh Orange

Here is a Color Gamut Chart. The black curve is the color of White in the middle.

If you plotted triangles for both SD and HD on this chart - you would see that the triangle for HD is larger than the SD

Hey, got a quick DVE related question. It looks like it' finally available from Netflix, so I think I'm gonna rent it. Since I doubt it comes with the blue filter, will the one that came with the original Avia SD-DVD work? Are they the same blue, or a slightly "different" blue?

Thanks, its great the amount of info this site and the users provide.
I just found this over in the "Display Calibration" forum :
AVS HD 709 – Free calibration disk(s) (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=948496)
In HD with the basic tests, Contrast/Brightness/Color/Tint + a whole bunch of test patterns :)

Re: Blue filters ...

Yes you can use the one that came with AVIA ...

Now the bad news ... they are all different blue filters. Production variation can be significant even within the same batch of filters. A blue filter in one AVIA box can be noticeably different than the one in another AVIA box. Ditto for other products too.

What can you do about this ... not much. Just realize that blue filters are tools ... and do not represent the final answer every time. You must always look at real material to verify if the filters worked right or not.
