View Full Version : Why Skimping on HD-DVD Inserts?
captainfish 12-05-07, 07:59 PM What is the point of going High Def and creating fancy new packaging if they are not going to put anything in the packages?
I bought Superman Returns and it has only an insert stating that the disc was created with tender loving care. WHAT A RIP! There wasn't even a chapter list.
How about a list of all the extra features that get put into a HD-DVD?
Oh yeah, most HD-DVD's dont even come with extra extras.
ccotenj 12-05-07, 08:02 PM what is the point of this thread?
TheThunder 12-05-07, 08:07 PM I dunno if you haven't purchased DVDs in the last year or so but that's been the norm. No more chapter lists or anything of the sort. I agree with you though, I still think they should throw in inserts with chapters. Makes demoing a whole helluva lot easier.
rynberg 12-05-07, 08:36 PM While I somewhat agree, who needs a chapter list when you can bring that up anytime during the movie without interrupting playback?
thebends22 12-05-07, 08:52 PM I agree it just seems more empty with just the hd dvd in the case. Maybe we just expect more....
Well the new web enables titles and some other titles with heavy interactivity have been coming out with little guide "booklets" (if you can call folded paper totaling 4 pages)... I think that has been pretty cool.
I agree with Rynberg... who needs a chapeter list when you also have the bookmark feature found with many hd dvd's. I belive it is much easier for demo'ing cool sound and visual effects when you can go to "my scenes"
Megalith 12-05-07, 09:30 PM Except for the disc and the case, I throw everything out.
Vince2909 12-05-07, 09:37 PM You been conditioned to something being there, it doesn't matter what it is, when the space is empty you think "WTF!?!? Wheres my stuff!!!"...I know, I did the samething myself.
captainfish 12-05-07, 10:04 PM I agree and disagree.
I agree that I do not need the chapter list flyer... but at least they made the effort of putting it in there.
However, Recall all the extras you got when you bought the Lord of the Rings Deluxe Sets.
It is something to set it apart from a normal purchase. I know we throw the cards away that come with out birthday or christmas gifts, but when we don't get one it just doesn't feel the same.
Brajesh 12-06-07, 08:44 AM Save some trees, forget the inserts :). I'd rather they make the HDM cases slimmer as my collection grows & I run out of shelf space.
BuGsArEtAsTy 12-06-07, 09:08 AM what is the point of this thread?
Maybe the original post is not showing up on your screen or something, but the point of this thread is to ask why HD DVD releases are skimping on the inserts. Seems pretty clear to me.
I too asked the same question, in 2006. Unfortunately, things didn't change in 2007.
I'm used to getting at least a chapter list or something in my DVDs, and I happen to like having them.
While I somewhat agree, who needs a chapter list when you can bring that up anytime during the movie without interrupting playback?
What if you don't want to cover part of the screen with the menu? It's a matter of convenience, and a chapter list costs them all of what... 2 cents?
I would like to see HD DVD cases get thinner though...
So what exactly is it that you are missing in the inserts?
- Chapter list
What else? Or do you just generally miss the fact that there are no inserts beside the top/bottom cover graphics?
Just curious.
Personally I've witnessed an increase in HD DVD inserts due to the introduction of web enabled titles, all these seem to come with those tiny instruction "booklets". Star Trek TOS boxed set also had these cool (but very impractical) plastic inserts detailing disc content.
On the BD side some (or at least PoTC 2) Disney titles seem to come with similar instruction booklets for their interactive content.
Personally I like inserts and extra material in the box, just for the sake of it. But as far as a chapter list goes, the picture-featuring, while-movie-is-playing chapter selections in HD DVDs are just simply too convenient for me to miss any chapter lists in the box.

I like having:
1) Chapter list
2) List of special features and instructions if necessary
3) Extra graphics
The first two are for convenience. The 3rd is obviously not, just aesthetics, etc.
And sometimes it's faster to just glance at the chapter list than it is to scroll through a bunch of pix on screen.
Yeah, obviously I can live without the insert, but it just seems like a joke to spend $30 on a title and get not even a frickin' piece of paper insert with it, esp. when they're commonplace with DVD. However, this is not a criticism of HD DVD per se, it's not HD DVD's fault that some studios are cheaping out with certain discs.
No_U-Turn 12-06-07, 09:50 AM fwiw: all of my few german Concorde HD DVDs have a little, printed insert with a few notes about the film.
I have to say that i like that, maybe just because i love going through the booklets of my cds with all their artwork. I also know itīs kind of pointless to have something printed with a DVD / HDM, as everything is being shown/explained on the disc itself.
Having said that, i still feel HDM without any inserts are "naked". But thatīs just my 2ct.
ShagMan 12-06-07, 09:55 AM ok...
1) I don't need the inserts. As somebody mentioned, with the chapter selection methods as good as they are with the sub-menu popping up, I just don't need the dead tree in my HD-DVD case.
2) Bugs, I am going to strongly disagree with you on the cases, I DON'T want them any smaller, just because there'd be no way to pick them off the shelf... the spines are hard enough to read as-is right now.
Otis Widlflower 12-06-07, 10:21 AM Meh what I _REALLY_ want is an 200+ HDDVD changer with the Reon or Realta chip for $800 street... Cases are for amateurs ;)
vancouver 12-06-07, 11:14 AM first thing I do when I get a new HD DVD or BD is take off the plastic, open it, peel away the security sticker and throw away all the inserts.
VXXJesterXXV 12-06-07, 11:44 AM Some discs have art and possibly chapter listings on the back side of the cover art. This is of course visible through the case when it's open.
Averhoeven 12-06-07, 11:53 AM Except for the disc and the case, I throw everything out.
Yup, I even remove the little security things inside.
SugarBowl 12-06-07, 01:52 PM I create a little spreadsheet type page, where i fill in the date purchased, price, and store. Then below is a movie log where i record when I watched it and who I watched it with, and how far we got..
stretch35 12-06-07, 02:25 PM no insert with superman : the movie on hd dvd
Tes7769 12-06-07, 02:37 PM The only movies that often come with inserts are (most) Universal releases and/or HD-DVDs that have special/new features that need directions to show people how to navigate them.Imo, unless it's(HD-DVDs) a boxed set,has special features(that need explanation),and/or has a ton of content, then there really isn't a reason to include inserts. What they should do is do is print the stuff on the reverse side of the covers like Disney does if there's a need to include directions/chapter info/liner notes.
mva5580 12-06-07, 03:02 PM I can honestly say that I couldn't care less whether or not there is an insert or not, but I would wager to say that once this format becomes a tad more "main stream," they will start putting chapter inserts in there instead of inserts that advertise other discs to buy in the format. They are trying to win a battle here, so they're advertising everywhere they can.
mikehalper1x 12-06-07, 05:02 PM honestly, in my ten years buying DVDs, whenever i opened the dvd, i would look inside, take out the little piece of paper with the chapter list, and say "what the hell?! this is it? why did they bother?" I would prefer to have nothing. I love that HD DVDs have nothing.
Zappcatt 12-06-07, 08:50 PM I don't mind that they are not in most movies.
In the early days, I think a few of my DVD's had cool booklets..but they would always fall out when I turned over the package to get the disk out. They ended up getting bent and it annoyed me.
evolver 12-06-07, 08:55 PM Book...let?
http://www.dvdactive.com/news/releases/bonnie-and-clyde.html
Close enough. :D
I like the disc inserts as long as thiers some info about the movie ans such I don't really need chapter listing.
CE laserdiscs were great. The CAV sets always came with a ton. Star wars definitve or even the abyss LD
BuGsArEtAsTy 12-07-07, 12:11 AM OK then how about this. If they're gonna be cheap and not even give us inserts, then they should offer the discs cheap to us too. $19.99 or less for ALL discs. :)
Super XP 12-07-07, 12:38 AM Why would you want a book with your HD DVD? It's not a game?
shadowrage 12-07-07, 12:47 AM I wouldn't have a problem if they just removed those little tabs for booklets.
It's like ordering a cheeseburger then not getting the cheese. Just tell me I can only have the hamburger.(I should have used the burger no ham thing. doh)

I bought the movie to watch it, not to read an insert...

Who said anything about a book?
