It's HERE. OLED. All eleven inches of it.
According to the sales agent (Sony's to good for clerks) they had just set it up earlier this morning.
Here's the buzz he related:
For display only (for now).
Units currently selling in Japan, US sales start in the spring.
Current selling price in Japan $2000 in US dollars.
Only display in San Diego, or California for that matter (according to agent)
Pros: 5mm deep diplay panel, elegant styling.
Cons: Puny and expensive.
Hype: Up to 1,000,000:1 CR, <1ms response time.
How did it look?
Saw portion of BD Surf's UP. You'll have to make your own judgements.
Production model (not prototype) at SonyStyle, Fashion Valley mall, San Diego, Ca, (For your eyes only)
FWIW, if you missed CES last January you can now get an eyefull. Enjoy.
Why would you ask a rhetorical question and then not answer it?
How DID it look?

Sometimes it takes more than 11 inches!

Methinks his lack of committal response indicates displeasure over the size/expense relationship. But as whimsically mentioned by Artwood, at 11" diagonal, pleasure at what one experiences must be weighed against the content one can actually enjoy.
At 11", and even a 1,000,000:1 CR, can you discern the advantage when shadow detail is reduced to microscopic dimensions? SONY has a bad habit of rushing to be "First" with products that make no real fiscal sense. It's good PR until..............those like CMRA point out the obvious.
It would make a hell of a Headrest Monitor though..............
How could it no have great pq at 11 inches but blow it up to 70 inches and see what you get.

You really need to make your own opinion.
Chances are if one SonyStyle store carries it, others do too-or should have them shortly.
For me to comment on the little I saw would be unjustified. Better to bring a BD disc (or two) you are very familar with and have a go. I'm planning a return trip to do just that.

Please post a report on your return trip if you can. I don't have a Sony Style Store near me to view this.
Now look out for the eventual thread(s) by owners who justify the $2000 price tag by it's major advantage over all LCD and Plasma screens - portability/resolution ratio. I'm only half-joking too. It's amazing how vehemently people can defend their purchase decisions.
But in all seriousness, I think it's interesting technology and will be interesting to see OLED TV's grow in size over the next few years. That does bring up a question in my mind though - I wonder if there's a contrast ratio "ceiling". Can ANY film in existence actually utilize that degree of contrast? For that matter, can the human eye actually appreciate that degree of contrast? And if it can, does it make a film better? After all, most of us have contrast turned DOWN on our sets. So what's the point in increasing the contrast that much from a consumer point of view? (From a corporate point of view, it's good marketing obviously)
I don't have a SonyStyle store near me either.
FWIW, not much has changed since December. One month ago same 11" panel, same price. It's merely a rich man's toy for the moment.
