Sci Fi show gives contestants "Run for Money"
By Kimberly Nordyke, Hollywood Reporter

LOS ANGELES - Sci Fi Channel has ordered a pilot for "Run for Money", a reality competition that pits contestants against one another in the quest for cash prizes as they are stalked by "hunters".

Based on a successful Japanese format, "Run for Money" takes place over 60 minutes of real time in landmark locations. As the clock winds down, the competition gets harder as more hunters appear on the streets, the game perimeter gets smaller and tasks are assigned that test contestants' nerves.

Contestants earn money for every second they "stay alive" and may opt out of the competition. If they keep playing and are overrun by a hunter, they lose everything. The last person standing takes the prize.

Production on the pilot is set to begin next month in Los Angeles.

SCI FI SET TO RUN FOR MONEY WITH GREENLIGHT OF HIGH-STAKES COMPETITION PILOT

New York, NY – December 6, 2007 -- SCI FI Channel continues its run in the development of exciting reality competition programming, greenlighting the action-packed, edge-of-your-seat pilot Run For Money, it was announced today by Mark Stern, Executive Vice President of Original Programming for SCI FI.

Run For Money is executive produced by Scott Messick and Mess Media for Disney's Buena Vista Productions and Fujisankei Communications International. Production is set to begin in January in Los Angeles.

Run For Money is an action-packed, edge-of-your-seat reality competition show that pits a group of contestants against each other in the quest for cash prizes, while being stalked by relentless "hunters." Based on a successful Japanese format from Fuji Television, the action takes place over 60 minutes of real time in various landmark locations. As the clock winds down, the competition gets harder as more hunters appear on the streets, the game perimeter gets smaller, and tasks are assigned that test fraying nerves. Contestants earn money for every second they "stay alive" and may opt out at their choosing. If they keep playing and are overrun by a hunter, they lose everything. The last person standing takes the prize.

"'Run For Money' is a fun, fast-paced, thriller of a show," said Mark Stern. "and fits nicely with our reality agenda of putting ordinary people in wild, extraordinary situations. It's high-adrenaline fun; part sport, part real-life videogame."

This sounds like a much less deadly version of "Battle Royale". I'm curious as to how a hunter "takes out" a contestant, though.

I'm hoping ray guns.

I'm hoping real disintegrators where they go mad and turn on the producers for putting reality shows on the Sci-Fi channel.:D

What does it have to do with High Definition programming? It does not say anywhere that it will be in HD. Wrong forum. Mods, please move it.

It doesn't say it won't be HD, either. Take a pill and relax. The mods will move it if needed.

If the Writer's strike lasts long enough, this should end up on NBC.

My fear is coming true, by the time I get SciFi in HD, there won't be any SciFi left on it. :(

Running man anyone?
Kind of obvious that someone over in Japan saw the movie and came up with this derivative show. Probably got the old DVD on Amazon for a buck!

As Ben Richards would say.. "hey Killian... here's Sub Zero.... now just plain zero!" :D:D

Sci-Fi is a total disaster. Just when you think they can't get more pathetic, they do.

How about this for a reality show:
Shove all the network executives in a room and the home viewers get to vote on who they want tossed out the window each week. Of course, only the audience knows the room is on the 30th floor.

Yeah, I'm all for that. I know a corporation's goal is profit, but it just seems wrong somehow for them to pollute the SciFi channel with wrestling and reality shows. There's a ton of channels for sports, reality shows, etc. The SciFi channel should be for us, for fans of SciFi/Fantasy. It's not like we're asking for 10 channels, just one little channel, our own little niche in a sea of programming.

Well, maybe there will be some "sci-fi" element to it, like using high-tech surveillance or advanced non-lethal weaponry. Or they will have nerds try to out-wit jocks or something.

But really, I think NBC/Universal is putting this out on sci-fi first to test the waters, if no one complains and it is relatively popular, it will move to primetime.
