I already have the TV and mounts. I've got Tapcon lags and the appropriate bits. I'm handy, I've done my own wiring all thru the house.
My main worry is a 42" plasma crashing down. Is it worth $300 just for presence of mind and someone to blame should an accident happen?

Tapcon lags? Tapcons are used for screwing into concrete, aren't they? Is that what you're installing on?
I'd do it myself and save the $300, but I do a lot of home improvement. The wiring is not the hard part. It's the trusting yourself to mount a 100 lb object on a wall and making sure it stays.
I imagine you're really mounting it on drywall hung on 2x4 studs. In that case you need to make sure you're using 3" coarse thread decking screws (not drywall screws) and being sure you're hitting the stud.

Tapcons are chosen since it's a brick fireplace. Might the age of the mortar also be a concern?
Just spoke to my insurance guy, and he said that I could claim it on my homeowners policy if the mortar were to fail.

You are aware that some insurance companies will raise your rates or drop you just for making an inquiry about a possible future claim? I'm not kidding.

urban legend. valid links please.
on topic. as another poster said, it's not really all that difficult to do. the hardest part is manhandling the screen up there. if (and i didn't) i was going to mount mine, i'd trust myself and a couple of my friends a lot more than the people at magnolia.
there's a couple outfits out there that do this. might be worth checking around.

No disrespect to the OP but I can never understand why you'd want to mount one that high, and above a fireplace. A 42" tv, unless you're sitting less than 6' away, that's going to look like a 19" tv from a reasonable distance. Not to mention the kink in your neck you'll be getting.
That said, you can do it yourself, but you better make sure those bolts grab really well.
