View Full Version : Kenwood Sovereign System (Changer, Entre, and Receiver) Issues and Answers
i wouldn't worry about it. there is always a constant supply on ebay.
i am guessing maybe it's one reason why they are so many on ebay from resellers now. kenwood may have begun clearing out inventory.
here is another product that rips dvds to hard drive storage. wonder how these guys are getting around the the DCMA issue. This is a big company that would make a nice target.

JimMcGowanInlet 12-05-03, 08:35 PM I mentioned a several post ago that I was disgusted with Kenwoods support. WELL apparently Kenwood read my post and sent me an email. If you enjoy Jay Leno Headlines then you will enjoy this email conversation I had with Kenwood.

We read your post on AVS Forum, but according to our records, we have not received any e-mails from you. Any questions about the Entre should be sent to inquiry@kenwoodusa.com
======================================
Ok first if they had read my message on this forum they would have noticed that I specifically stated I DO NOT OWN AN ENTRE! But ok so I reply to them with this...

Subject: RE: E-mail reference #E292339
Im glad you read AVS Forum, but it appears you are not getting support requests from your own WEB Site.
Below is just one of the requests I made. Don't bother answering this question (I know the answer now) but I would like you to research this confirmation number that you indicate you never received. (You'll find ~14 more from me when you do)
I do not own an Entre. I only have a DV5050M right now and I'm thoroughly disgusted with the many bugs in NetNamer. Kenwoods cost to fix the bugs in NetNamer would cost less than one lost customer.

So I send the above message back to kenwood and this is what they sent back to me:

Thank you for writing to us at Kenwood USA Corporation.
Yes, as you know, the NetNamerDV software cannot look up DVD titles. Sorry, there are currently no plans to change this.
If you have any further questions or need help with anything, please feel free to contact us again.

Great Support Kenwood. You sure convinced me to buy more products from you.

I don't have an Entre and I do not see a button on the remote called delay so I suspect this might be an Entre function. Is there any way using the remote to override the auto play feature? I have a pronto remote that I can proram with any Ir sequence.
Thanks

Adam Mrotek 12-05-03, 09:19 PM Ken,
Their's always VISA. Just kidding. I bought two floor models from GG for $500 ea. They were open-boxes and did not have everything but i diddn't need it all. I'll bet there will be dv5900m's and Entre'son e-bay from time to time from people who don't want to invest the time to make up for it's imperfections
Jim,
I was assuming you had a universal remote. Pick up the 2116 or 2117 at radio shack for $30 bucks.
Don't waste your time with Kenwood.
JimMcGowanInlet 12-05-03, 10:28 PM I do have a universal remote sort of.... Its a Pronto TSU3000. Its fully programable and has many of the univeral code sets in it. If the radio shack unit can do a delay than so can my proto. But what code is delay?
I would need the Radioshack code set like 1064 or 0027 and the button in that set that sends a delay command. Or I can enter the Ir hex string directly into the pronto.
The Ir Hex codes look like this
0000 006D 0022 0002 0155 00AA 0016 003F 0016 0015 0016 003F 0016 0014 0016 0014 0016 0014 0016 0015 0016 003F 0016 0014 0016 0014 0016 0014 0016 0015 0016 003F 0016 003F 0016 0014 0016 0014 0016 0014 0016 0014 0016 0015 0016 003F 0016 0015 0016 003F 0016 0014 0016 0014 0016 0014 0016 0014 0016 0014 0016 0015 0016 003F 0016 0015 0016 003F 0016 003F 0016 06EB 0155 0055 0016 0EAB
Ohhhhhh Heck! Maybe Im just drinking too much wine tonight. Might you mean
Stop
Delay 1/4 Second
Stop
As a macro? If thats what you mean Jeez do I feel dumb right now.
But I would think that pressing Stop Stop on my remote would have the same effect but it doesn't. It just keeps playing. I've pressed stop many times on the remote but the dang thing still will not STOP. Does it need to be done withing a specific time frame like while the Kenwood splash screen is up, or the hourglass,or just as ithe movie starts?
I promise not to drink too much wine next time. LOL
Thanks
Jim
NiteOwl 12-05-03, 10:34 PM Where is Kenwood Support for the Sovereign products based out of? Does anyone know?
Adam Mrotek 12-05-03, 10:42 PM NiteOwl,
I believe support is out of california. They stop answering the phone at 5:00 pm pst. Kinda funny because the little green announcement that came with my products advertised support 24/7. I wonder how long that lasted.

Slocko- glad you found the MAX by AMX....FYI, I had posted about it in this very Entre topic when I got back from CEDIA. (I know it is hard to notice evey post in a 4000+ post topic!) MAX is the product that got me thinking about the whole HTPC or other front end (like Roku) to manage a large NAS of ripped DVDs and music. I think we are thinking about the same plan down the line. I work for an AMX dealer/ programmer, and I think the MAX looks great, but too expensive for now (at least for me) even at dealer pricing. Anyway, small world.
No necessarily: I just got back from CEDIA, and I work for a Pro-AV dealer who sells AMX control systems, so I spent quite a bit of time in their booth. The day of the show opening, AMX (a large touchpanel/control system company) anounced they had bought a new company and from this, introduced MAX by AMX, your "Integrated Content Server.'
http://www.amx.com/press-releases.asp?release=2003-09-05a
Several storage sizes of two main versions are avaialble: one is for music, the other is music and movies ("MMS", for multimedia server.) The SMALLEST MMS model they have is the 125, which stores up to 125 DVDs of full content, at the exact same quality as the original disc. This uses 1.2 terabytes. They also have 200, 300, 350, 400, and 900 DVD models (900 model is 7.2 terabytes!) They output via gigabit ethernet to the AVM (audio video module) which is the breakout box that you would put at each display/system. The system can support multiple simultaneous streams with up to 8 MMS boxes.
Price: about $10K for the 150 DVD equilivent. This is a real product now. I did not get details about how they rip and how they get around copyright laws. It has a built-in DVD/CDRW drive. All the rep said is that "you need to answer some questions, like YES I own this disc". Hopefully we will see more specifics soon. Clearly this is too expensive for most of us now, but if Hollywood can't stop it, this IS the future.
I also found it it runs on LINUX, has PC spftware in addition to full AMX and Crestron control support, and the AVW has aspect ratio control, digital audio, S-video, and VGA outputs (no component?) Is says VGA runs at 1024x768 @ 60hz, but there may be more that is adjustable there. Here is a link for the PDF spec sheet:
http://www.amx.com/techdocs/1002759.pdf
Clingpeach 12-05-03, 10:52 PM My whole house AMX controlled it even cotrols my Kenwood Entre..The products offered by AMX are just way too expensive.. There is no way right now that i could justify pulling out the Entre or Escient which we know has major shortocmings and putting in this piece of equipment. I know you get what you pay for but I am going to stay with the inferior products for a while longer
mikemav 12-05-03, 11:03 PM Yeah....I love AMX products, but sometimes I wonder about the prices. I really like their new wireless color touch panel if you are using an AMX system, and it is even less expensive than the model it replaces (and does much more.)
http://www.amx.com/product-details.asp?lin=86&pf=&pid=718
HOWEVER, the part that blew me away was the optional "kickstand" for the panel, which is needed simply to prop it up at an angle on a table. Price- MSRP $400!
http://www.amx.com/product-details.asp?lin=86&pf=&pid=722
Sorry- I know that was getting off topic. Anyway, I think the goal I had in mind when looking at the MAX by AMX was a type of media center Entre interface that could grap ripped DVDs off the network. But even the MAX at $10K up may not be perfect. I do not want to be locked into DVDs. I want to be able to play discs from my changer, DVD VIDEO_TS files, .TS hi-definition capture files, TiVo files, music, pictures, and other types of media from a server. NiteOwl- now there is an Entre hack I would pay big bucks for! I know, I know, the Entre does not have MPEG or other decoders on board, so it could not do this even if it could get files from a server. Makes you want to write a HTPC front end or set-top box front end like the Roku, but has all of the features of an Entre. Kind of an Entre2. Anyone want to take a shot? We could start a "research grant" donation for those who think it might be possible. :D
Looks like a few of us are primed to make the leap to the next level when the right product appears at the right price point.
The Roku is definetely the leader right now. At their price point and with the SDK coming out, it could take off like a rocket in terms of people writing apps for it. They might very well, just become the leaders in this new niche.
Jim you are drinking too much. Most likely to get over the way kenwood is treating you :D
Yes I mean a macro. Setup code for the Ratshack remotes is 0534.
Like I said previously, it will still go through the motions of reading the disc, but then it will stop. You can do it manually, but it's hard to time it right. When i want to do it from the front panel, I just keep hitting the stop button until I see that it has stopped. That way I don't have to try and time it.
I actually leave mine on, but have the macro in there in case someone ever turns it off accidently.

Nick Satullo 12-06-03, 12:51 PM I'm hoping this is not the start of something "new."
Yesterday, I attempted to turn on my Entre with my remote, and the Entre just sat there like an idiot. Its red standby light was stationary.
I rebooted the Entre, and it then responded to the remote commands.
The same thing happened this morning.
Has anyone experienced this? I've had the disc eject sign-of-death, but I've not heard anyone report this.
Thanks,
Nick
Either all of a sudden your usb keyboard or ethernet adapter is giving you conflitcts, or your hard drive may be acting up. Hard to tell.
When your tray ejects, that means the drive has failed and it can't find an operating system, so the default is to eject the tray so you can put in the initializing cd that probably only Escient has.
Hopefully it's just your usb ports causing problems.
You might want to unplug it and plug it back in. That will force a re-check of the partition tables.

Nick  EEEK! I did actually have this, right after I ran DVDedit for the first time. I assumed that it was just a fluke. In my case, I pushed the power button and the unit spontaneously rebooted. I didn't report this to NightOwl because I didn't think that DVDedit was the cause. I hope it isn't.
sbonaparte 12-06-03, 06:19 PM I read the MAX product spec's and you can do the same thing with a ReplayTv unit and the DVArchive utility. DVArchive will store the ripped DVD MPEG file ( DVD can be ripped by a number of utilities ).
I think it would work the same but there maybe a quality difference, I am not familiar with MPEG resolution for the Replay in High Quailty.

I didn't report this to NightOwl because I didn't think that DVDedit was the cause. I hope it isn't. To try to help alleviate any fears of using NightOwls DVDedit program I'd like to mention that the method he is using to update the Entre's DVD database and XML files in partition 7.0.6 is modeled after what Media Manager does. That is to say how OpenGlobe (WindSystems) designed it. Both MM and DVDedit build XML files that get placed in temp directories on the Entre. The Entre then notices new files there, validates them (how much I don't have any idea), and then updates the real database and real XML files used in the Entre's GUI.
He is not using FTP to update the edit/update the original files like some of us had done. That is much much more risky than what he is doing technically and probably legally.
If there are problems with the Entre (menu freeze or some other things) it is mostly likely not a problem with his program assuming it builds the XML files "to spec" and puts them in the temp directory. The Entre is responsible for taking them and applying them and the side effects.
Of course, from what I know, OpenGlobe doesn't have a program that does exactly what DVDedit does (modified DVD info) but it clearly has MM (aka pipeline). Perhaps the interface from the newer OpenGlobe products does do what DVDedit does to apply the changes. Where I was going with that was even though he is following rules perhaps that Entre functionality has not been thoroughly tested by OG
Overall the Entre has some pretty neat technical stuff going on behind the scenes.
Similarly I'm very impressed by what NightOwl has figured out and converted into a program (DVDedit - BTW, new enhanced version in progress as we speak and tested by several). I know he has spent numerous hours on that program. KW/OG/we "owe" him much $/thanks.
Again I mention the above to state using DVDedit is probably as safe as using Media Manager. Hmm... that maybe is not a good comparison <Grin>
Nick Satullo 12-07-03, 02:55 PM As one of the people actively working with DVDedit, I can say that it's now been almost two days since there was any issue with my remote, and I've never used the DVDedit program more.
I echo Scott's sentiments. What Joe's done in a few weeks makes the Entre the tool it's supposed to be.
Nick
mikemav 12-08-03, 04:48 PM Not to hijack this thread, but I have been using the Entre/DV5900/VR5700 combo for about as long as it has been available, and follow this thread very closely. Like Slocko has also mentioned, some of us are looking towards a future, and sooner than rather later our movies will not only be on shiny silver discs. I make a back-up copy of every DVD I add now as a regular practice, using DVD Decrypter (PC) or DVD Backup on my Mac, in case of scratches, etc.. Recently hard drive space has gotten so cheap that I might rather keep the movies on a server rather than take the time to burn backups to disc. When you find super sales, you can get large hard drives (120GB+) for about 50 cents/ gig. That equates to about $2.50 for a DVD's worth of data, which is close to what I pay to find reliable DVD-R to play in my Kenwood changer. I know, DVD-R can be $.50-$1 or less, but I have found either the burns or the playback in the changer to be unrelaible with cheaper media (TDK 2X work best for me now.) Anyway, when you factor the time it takes, leaving them all on a hard drive is starting to make sense.
Sorry for the long preamble, but the point I am getting to is lookking into replacements for the Entre. Slocko and I are both following the ROKU thread, and it looks promising. I was wondering if anyone is using or has tried DVD Lobby and Main Lobby from Cinemar? I downloaded a 30 day trial, and the user interface is unbelievable. It is client/server based, can access discs from a changer or files from a hard drive (or both) and they even have a plug-in for RS232 control over the Kenwood changer. The new version has built-in lookup of discs via the internet, and I gotta tell you, the search engine was a heck of a lot more reliable than Openglobe. I have a myHD high definition card in my PC, and it plays back DVD files on the hard drive at HD resolutions (1080i, 720p, etc..) There is a thread in the HTPC forum where people are comparing the picture quality to HD-HBO, etc.. Very nice looking indeed.
Don't get me wrong...I love my Entre and am not slamming it. I just want feedback to see if anyone else has experimented with other more expandable alternatives like DVD Lobby. The other cool thing about this one in particular is I may be able to have my cake and eat it too, since it can control the Kenwood changer via RS232, a PC based music server, internet radio, etc.. Any experiences please share. Thanks
Clingpeach 12-08-03, 05:01 PM Ive tried the Cinemar...Mario is wonderful as a tech support specialisit.. However, its very very complicated to use...just my opinion..
amargiot 12-09-03, 12:33 AM These two dvd players have been discontinued. Supposedly, their replacements will be shown at CES next month. Does anyone have any preliminary info on the new dvd players?
mikemav 12-09-03, 12:53 AM NiteOwl- Does your DVD Edit program (which I have not tried yet) have a feature to export the info for the DVDs in the Entre database to a file? I have never used DVD Profiler and am considering using DVDLobby in the future as I mentioned above. Could the XML data the Entre keeps about the changer discs be exported so I could get it into DVD profiler or another program?

No. . . and quite frankly (as hard as this may be to digest) I'm fearful that Kenwood will opt out of the entire Entre/Changer business. I have no inside information whatsoever . . . however, the Sirius thing is "serious." This is something that was a large part of the product's marketing.
I had not heard of replacement products, but we can only hope that Kenwood sticks around. I'll be at CES, although getting answers there is no easier than anywhere else, as the people on the floor often don't know what's next. By the way, that's not an indictment specific to Kenwood.
Nick
JonDeutsch 12-09-03, 09:32 AM I, too, am concerned about the future of the Sovereign line. The Siriusly lacking system (ha!) has me seriously concerned.
The biggest issues for me are:
1. Does the OpenGlobe contract ever "expire"???
2. Does support ever end?
3. I was really, really, really hoping for a universal changer (SACD/DVDA) or at least an SACD changer that I could daisy chain into the Sovereign system.
4. Damn, no more Sirius.
So, let me ask the group: is it too late for us to make our voices heard to Kenwood management (in the form of future purchasing interest vs. the more traditional bitching and moaning)?
I've heard of niche audiences having an effect on network programming gurus through coordinated feedback campaigns.
Just wondering where everyone's heads are on this...

JonDeutsch 12-09-03, 09:35 AM Check out http://www.radioio.com
They have a pretty good radio station thing going. You can get the medium quality streams w/o paying (though it IS listener supported... so if you listen, you should contribute!).
I have their ambient channel on my Entre almost every day now... all evening. It's very nice indeed. And... better quality than Sirius.
If you become a paying member, you can get the high-bandwidth streams (@125kbits/sec)! And these, then, are just about CD quality.
Nice...
So, if I understand everyone's postings correctly, Kenwood no longer offers Sirius radio stations via the ENTRE. Forgive me for asking what may seem a stupid question, but I do not beleive this is legal!! SInce I, and I am sure, many of you, bought the Entre with the Sirius component loudly marketed to us, it would seem that their decision to drop it is in effect false advertising, and therefore actionable in a court of law? I'm no lawyer, but this seems fairly cut and dried...
Any lawyers out there care to comment? I just do not think we should tke this lying down.
JonDeutsch 12-10-03, 05:07 PM Two things...
A friend of mine called Kenwood today, and they claim that Sirius works fine... that they were listening to it at work no problem via the Entre. They claimed no knowledge of contract cancellation.
But, even if Sirius is gone, it wasn't even there when the Entre was announced and released. It was announced the January following the launch of the product (forget when the Entre was launched, but it was prior to January)
Here's the announcement:
http://www.escient.com/releases/partner_jan0802.htm
I'm just glad the new Entre software is compatible with more radio streams, and is faster in 'tuning' them in. I'm listening to iRadio much more often since the 2.0 software release this summer!

call me cynical, but i wouldn't doubt if those guys are listening to some other stations, maybe virgin, and think it's Sirius.
i do remember reading it was a two year contract and it's pretty much been two years. maybe Sirius reply to my email was their way of applying pressure on Kenwood?
JonDeutsch 12-10-03, 07:57 PM Y'know, that letter now makes no sense to me. Sirius began in Jan, not Nov 27th, as far as I recall.
That's not 2 years.
Hmmmmm......
That said, my Sirius stations are not available. So, your cynicism is well founded.

Oliver Klohs 12-11-03, 11:03 AM Hi,
with so many owners of Kenwood changers around has anybody ever done something about the ugly Kenwood screen that appears during a disc change ?
When ist appears on a large screen it does not exactly add to the experience IMHO.
Oliver
maybe kenwood signed the deal in november, but didn't get them working till January????

JonDeutsch 12-11-03, 08:28 PM Very good news!
Let me ask a question...
If I do that, do I lose my custom entered radio stations?
And now let me ask another question...
What the hell is Sirius thinking sending completely bogus answers to us?!

hmmmmmmm, it could be that it was Sirius sad attempt to block entre users while kenwood works on a software upgrade to remove them?
since there is a lack of communication, i guess we could speculate forever. maybe kenwood caved in and did renew the contract.
sorry to do a chicken little!!!!! the sky could still fall, but at least not today.
sbonaparte 12-12-03, 11:38 AM I am glad the Sirius stuff is working again ( I will try tonight when I get home ), I did reload the stations the same day that I noticed the problem so someone made a correction.
I reference to discussion on "I Hope Kenwood Stays Around", I hope this also. I think it would be a good idea of Kenwood to combine with another MAJOR product line. Since the Marantz+Denon+Replay combination they have the making of a combination unit that could rock the industry. Kenwood should be working on a competitive product or beefing up there another area of there market share.
If everyone remembers the email questionnaire a number of months ago questioning how much would you spend for these types of features:
USB Attached HD Expansion
TV Video Recorder
etc... ( I don't remember all of the statements )
These features stated in there questionnaire would put them on top of the market. As long as there is a versitle base unit using "now style" features (USB ports, IDE HD's, RJ45, etc..) there is an infinite amount of possibilities.
I believe everyone is looking for a single unit that can centralize there AV setups. If growth of features from a single unit are to come then there most likely needs to be a monthly or annual subscription to promote continued development. I am not sure if the current hardware is capable of leading us into the future but this is MY OPINION ONLY :).
I that said.. Kenwood needs to provide there marketed feature sets if nothing else.. But we all (including them) will be left behind as new units hit the market that combine multiple devices or expand requested feature sets.
I still LOVE my Entre and it still makes my friends jealous...

DannyFresh 12-12-03, 04:41 PM Yes, Some Sirius stuff works but there are alot of unavailable stations..Funny If you go to Sirius.com and try to listen to, lets say Big 80's the stream is available, but not from the entre........
JonDeutsch 12-12-03, 05:10 PM The thing is, I've added 8-10 Internet Radio stations, and I don't want them to be erased.
Yes, radioio.com has .asx URLs. I found them via Windows Media Player's radio library page (just clicked on WMP 9's radio button), selected Ambient, and then found the 64kbs Radio Ambient link. Clicked Play, then did properties in WMP, and got the URL. Put it into the Entre, and it works.
If you pay, you can get access to the 125kbs link! It sounds wonderful through my home theater (in 4 channel stereo).
Hope this helps... let me know if you have any more questions...

Mike, it's easy once you get the complete URL of the station you want to add. There are a few sites with more or less accurate listings. The only streams that seem to worki fairly reliably on my Entre are ASX stations, and not all the ones that I can stream on my desktop computer do necessarily work with Entre unfortunately. It's a lot of trial and error, and a compatible USB keyboard connected to your Entre will REALLY help.
- From Entre's Radio menu, press Option, then New station.
- Select "Internet".
- In the Name field, enter any radio station name you want (it will help if the first few letters of the name are the same for all the radios you manually enter, so they'll be listed together in the general listing instead of being scattered all over, and harder to find later.)
- In the Location field, type "Internet" (or anything else you want)
- In the URL field, enter the exact URL of the station you want to add/test. If you have broadband, try this one - Radioio's alt rock streaming at 128k - as a test: http://www.radioio.com/rock-hi.asx (good luck entering that with the remote!)
- Speed: Choose the speed of the stream, or the one closest (for the stream above for example, pick 128). Click select to scroll through the choices.
- Genre: Click select to scroll through the available ones.
- Channels: Stereo or mono
Press Record to save your entry and test it, hopefully it will stream just fine. You can always make changes to an existing station's saved settings by choosing Options and Edit Station.

JonDeutsch 12-13-03, 09:44 AM re: Radioio
Not to be a real stickler, but I feel the need to educate. :)
Radioio is a great, listener supported service. And their hi-quality streams are designed to be used via the web, via a membership fee. Yes, it is true that we can bypass this stipulation using the Entre. That doesn't mean we should without paying.
OK, off my pedestal. :)
Umberto, thanks for the info! I'll be updating my stations this weekend, then.

DannyFresh 12-13-03, 12:37 PM I have tried the Radioio 128K streams. I must say they are much better sounding than the Sirius streams. Has anyone tried to edit the Sirius streams resident on the Entre to reflect the new addresses listed in my other post? I haven't had time, and was wondering if anyone could get the "Unavailable" stations to work??

I don't understand because in this post a day or so ago it described how to get the stations back automatically. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?postid=3044508#post3044508
so are all the stations back after a rebuild of the stations? i'm kind of confused by having to add them back individually.
Turin2006 12-13-03, 08:08 PM Most of them work after the rebuild. The few that do not can be edited (Radio - Options - Edit Station) with the URL's posted iby DannyFresh yesterday, then they wil work as well.
Basically, it looks like the rebuild "forgot" to update the URL of a few Sirius streams with the new paths, although this will likely be corrected by Kenwood later. Someone was inquiring about the Big '80s stream (one of the few Sirius streams that did not work for me after the rebuild), the correct URL would be http://www.sirius.com/asx/at7wjajx/big80s.asx, as posted above. The URL downloaded by the rebuild lacks the "at7wjajx/" part, and does not work.

JonDeutsch 12-14-03, 12:42 AM Yes, it's a total WOW. In fact, I find myself listening to Radioio more than my CD collection these days. I love Radio Ambient. I've already bought a few CDs as a result of being introduced to artists I had not heard of.
The thing is, guys... if they start seeing a bunch of hi-bandwidth streams going out to non-identified users (which the Entre is), they may start getting smart and cut us off.
If you're going to do the hi-fi streams, then become a member. It's only fair. And we need to support iRadio stations that do it right!

This whole thing with Sirius is very confusing. It seems those streams are available to anyone.
So why is there a need for a contract?
JonDeutsch 12-14-03, 11:46 AM Slocko,
Great question! In that sirius.com provides the same quality streams off their internet site, it is a good question indeed.
Quick, easy answer: it's marketing fluff more than anything substantive. If there was a real quality contract, we'd be getting at least 64kbs streams, to have them on-par with the satellite quality. Why would Sirius want us to think their stations sound so, um, bad?? Doesn't incent me to buy Sirius if I associate it with warbly, crappy quality.

I think you are right. Sure sounds like their answer to my email was a ploy to get me to sign up for the higher quality streams.
The way kenwood pitched it also now seems more like marketing fluff as you put it.

I don't think those streams are meant to be available to everyone for free. I don't think you find them on the Sirius website saying listen to "me for free". There is a guest logon that states: "Sample live SIRIUS music or listen to pre-recorded samples of SIRIUS talk programming for 20 minutes. "
So I'm guessing the alleged "contract" allows for a stream that is > 20 minutes.
Sirius is business and if it was free then ... well not a very good business and not for long. As far as I'm concerned I get it as part of my Entre package and the overly expensive Axcess. I'm not pointing out ethics issues because I'd be a hypocrite in some ways. Only answering your questions as I understand things (currently).
hmmmmm. I guess that explains why the Sirius stations were never high quality. Has anyone verified that you can listen to the stations for longer than 20 minutes?
I have been playing with my new Axcess (courtesy of a distinguished gentleman on this board) and it's a pretty nifty device. But I agree that the original price is way to high. Kenwood could have used the Axcess to drive the sales of the Entre if it was priced better. The Axcess has been the perfect addition to my bedroom. It just fit's there.
Talking about the Axcess, how do I keep it from dying? Every morning it seems to have gone to standby mode and then I have to turn it back on, and it has to reconfigure itself.
Also, I had to manually put in all the network info. The automatic mode didnt work for me.
Nick Satullo 12-14-03, 05:41 PM Hans:
I believe there's a long manual that you have to download from the Kenwood website. Therein may lie some clues . . .
Nick
i looked through it, but i didn't see anything that really pertained to my situation. I do remember Scott saying he had to do something to keep his Axcess from losing it's connection.
sbonaparte 12-14-03, 07:54 PM NiteOwl. I've been reading the posts and just tried your DVDEdit.. I works great for me.. I do get the error
-2147220504 (800403e8) calling InternetOpenUrl function
On my XP workstation.. But Only on already Identified DVD's, blank unidentified DVD slots open fine.
Will the next version of you app have a excel or xlm file output or input? This would be so if you have to wipe your Entre ( as I just had to do ) you can save your customized or self identified DVD titles and slots..
Thanks for putting the app and time time spent...

i looked through it, but i didn't see anything that really pertained to my situation. I do remember Scott saying he had to do something to keep his Axcess from losing it's connection. My hub allows me to renew to my ISP every x minutes. My ISP would seem to go down in the early hours. Once using that I've had great success with the Axcess. Stays on until I turn it off. I don't stream constantly and put it on AUX as it's normal setting. AUX is connected to a old boombox. I think my software version is 2.04. When our Entre's got updated sometime ago so did the Axcess software. It improved a lot by retrying to talk to the Entre automatically and such when the Entre was rebooted.
mine just seems to power off after long periods of not using it. if i turn it off in the morning and when i come back upstairs late afternoon, it has shut off.
so the axcess needs to talk to the outside world periodically? why would losing your isp connection affect the virtual network inside your firewall?
does yours configure itself automatically or did you have to hardcode the network info?
i don't think my router does that, so i will setup a continous ping on my server to the axcess. i keep my server up 24/7. maybe that will keep it alive.
NiteOwl 12-15-03, 10:34 AM sbonaparte,
I'm planning on releasing a new version this evening. One thing that we have found, just recently as a matter of fact, is that not everyone has the http service running on their Entre by default. Currently, in order for me to retrieve coverart I need it to be enabled. When I coded the coverart retrieval code, I thought it was enabled by default... Hopefully I can fix these by this evening.

Scott, you are truly blessed. Your Media Manager works 100 percent and your axcess works all the time :)
Turin2006 12-15-03, 08:37 PM Slocko:
My Axcess auto-configures itself properly every time like Scott's. However, I also have the problem of intermittent shutoffs. In my case (this has been going on since I purchased it), after playing for a while - regardless of input selected - the music just stops and the unit goes into "Standby" mode (red standby light on, everything else - display included - off). This happens regularly, but not at consistent intervals: sometimes it will stay on and play for hours, sometimes it will shut off after just a few minutes. I could not count on Axcess to pipe background music for extended periods of time, as eventually I will find the unit in standby mode.
When I contacted Kenwood a year or so ago about the issue, their only recommendation was to perform a reboot of both Axcess and Entre, but this never solved the problem. The symptoms are still the same even after the new software (2.04, I think) was downloaded.
Because of this, I relegated the unit to the guest room and got an Audiotron for our master bedroom (more below). Then, I started noticing another problem with the Axcess which I had not run into before. After several days or weeks of non-use, I often find it "dead", with all lights off (including the red standby light). Pushing the power button doesn't do anything, and the only way to revive is to pull the plug from the wall and reconnect it. Very aggravating.
I love the Audiotron by Turtle Beach. Although it is a bit of a different machine (the biggest drawback is that you need a receiver to drive the speakers, since the Audiotron does not have built-in amplification like the Axcess), it is far more versatile than Axcess in streaming different formats of internet radio stations - including high-bandwidth Shoutcast streams, which Axcess cannot handle - and will also play MP3's off any networked server (in my case my computer's hard drive, where I ripped all my CD's and downloaded music). It uses HPNA or ethernet to communicate with my router. It has a far more readable display. It never crashes. It costs 1/2 as much as the Kenwood. Had I known about the Audiotron before, I would not have bothered with the Axcess at all.
--
Umberto
hmmmmmmmmmm. today it shutdown after 15 minutes of playing.
i really like this device because of the self amplification.
know that i have it in the bedroom i don't want to give it up. ultimately i guess i might have to find the smallest amplification device possible to use with the audiotron or the slimp.
NiteOwl 12-15-03, 11:48 PM Guys,
I uploaded DVDedit v2.0 to the geocities site. There are still a few issues to work out, but I think it is definately a big step from v1.1. If you have any bugs to report, please PM me. The URL to the file is:
http://www.geocities.com/kenwoodentre/index.html
If you have a previous version installed, all you need is the exe file (111kb). If not, download the v1.1 installer (3.5mb) first then extract the exe file from v2.0.

This version prompts you with the question to reuse your previous Entre IP or go "discover" what is available. You can use this freeware, PTFB (http://www.tlhouse.co.uk/PTFB.shtml), to automatically select your preference. This software is great for a variety of legitmate uses. Not slamming NiteOwl, mind you, because I've already talked to him about this and he has a good idea to 'check box' the dialog to avoid it being asked again for those that answer the same way always.
NiteOwl 12-16-03, 12:16 AM Axcess units are AAAWWWWEEESSSOOOMMMMEEE!!! Just wish the price would drop! Boy are they over priced. I, for one, would definately buy another. But $450+ a pop is kinda hard to justify to the wife.

sbonaparte 12-16-03, 07:00 AM I'm getting a "Run Time Error 10054 Connection reset by remote side". The first time DVDEdit 2.0 it came up but seemed to freeze, I killed it and the errors started.
I also reset the Entre and the workstation and the problem continued.
This is just an FYI I know your still working on things...
NiteOwl 12-16-03, 10:08 AM Please PM me with any bugs... please include your email address so I can forward any new version(s) to try out. I don't want to bog down this forum with support posts.

What do all you 5900 owners do to play back a dvd recorded in +r or +rw format?
Thanks for advice
Lars158 12-16-03, 10:13 PM So now when the new DVDM-100 is finally shipping, is anyone of you Entre owners considering jumping ship ? From what I can see in the manual the basic functionaility of this new unit is basically the same as the Entre, so I will probably stick with the Entre for now.
It's amazing that a new product such as the DVDM-100 does not have some new exciting functionality on top of what the old Powerball and Entre units provided. I was hoping this new unit would have new and improved search functions, option of configuring the GUI for 16:9 displays, an updated Media Manager application etc. Given, the actual hardware seems to be better with direct connections to all changers where all players can feed the hub with 5.1 analog audio input for DVD Audio support from all connected players, but other than that I am not sure this is anything else than a fancy Entre at a price tag of $2K (MSRP).

My DV-5900M's are playing DVD R+ just fine. No special step needed - just put it in there and press play...
NiteOwl 12-17-03, 12:36 AM I've placed all types DVD+-R/W into mines. It seems that the only important thing is to use name brand disks. The cheapos seem to cause alot of skipping/stuttering/pausing and pixelation. I have used Verbatim, Maxell, and Imation. Lately mostly Imation 4x +Rs. They've been on sale at BestBuy.
NiteOwl 12-17-03, 12:39 AM How big is the HD in the DVDM-100? I must be blind I can't find it anywhere.
NiteOwl,
I haveit working for the first time and I must tell you that it is a awesome piece of software. I commend you.
2 quick questions. I bought my kenwood 5900m used and it did not come with a remote control. only a keyboard. I am trying to get to the setup menu to configure aspect ratio, tv type, etc. Is there a way to get to the setup menu via the keyboard?
Also can the keyboard do everything the remote can do? If not where would I be able to find the remote for sale online?
chadly25 12-17-03, 07:46 AM NiteOwl- There isn't a HD in the DVDM-100.
mikemav 12-17-03, 09:22 AM Does anyone have a good place to look on the net for DVD cover art that is abou the same size as the Entre requires? A quick google image search for a few I was looking to edit in DVD Edit were all too small by a long shot. BTW- great work NiteOwl!

Using the "Image Resizer" Powertoy in I quickly resize my downloaded coverart with a right click on the image file. Use 'custom'.
http://www.windows-help.net/WindowsXP/powertoys-xp.html
Also this app is likely on your machine - it's on my Win98 and XP machine. It is decent and resizes easily. Just choose pixels for units and resize to ### x 365. No matter what software you are using to resize look for the option to "keep aspect ratio" when resizing.
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\PhotoEd\Photoed.exe
My coverart normally comes from buy.com or amazon.com ... tip use http://froogle.google.com to locate various places with pictures (they show up next to the items in froogle). Those site typically have "show larger image" type if hyperlink. I download that picture and resize it to ### x 365
Lars 158 and Nite Owl-
thanks for info on playing dvd +r/+rw's

mikemav 12-17-03, 09:55 AM Has anyone had any trouble with MP3 backup CDs you have made in the Entre? I tried to get all the songs off the Entre and it ended up being 4 CDs worth (I don;t have that much on there yet) Problem is, some of the files will not copy from the CD into either my PC or Mac due to read or data errors in the file. The songs in question show up in the CD directory, but must be corrupt since they will not copy. I figure I will try again, but brunign with the Entre is so tedius. Has anyone else had problems with this?
i am not sure about the keyboard. you can download the manual from www.kenwoodusa.com and check to see what the keyboard supports.
if all else fails, you can buy a cheap remote from radio shack. the kenwood code for dvd players is 5034. that code seems to have pretty much all the functions of the original.
i recommend the 2116 or the 2117. they cost around $30 bucks at radio shack. it's the one i use. radio shack also has a 30 day return policy, in case it doesn't have the functions you need.
if you really want the original you can buy it here:
http://www.partsolver.com/SearchResults.asp?ModelID=63342&Keywords=remote+control&ManufacturerID=85&ModelNumber=DV5900M&SearchType=ModelNumber&x=27&y=14
it's 50 bucks which I think the radio shack would be a better deal.

Okay, this just happened yesterday. I went to look at it, and it was completely dead with no lights on.
I think it's defective. Scott has had no problems with his. I'm going to send it in for repair.
I'll report how it goes. It should have a 2 year warranty since it's a sovereign product. So if mine comes back fixed, most likely they will just ship me a new one, then you can send yours in.

After several days or weeks of non-use, I often find it "dead", with all lights off (including the red standby light). Pushing the power button doesn't do anything, and the only way to revive is to pull the plug from the wall and reconnect it. Very aggravating.

NiteOwl 12-17-03, 04:30 PM I think the best place for covers is All Music Guide (AMG). There are a couple of sites. Most important are allmusic.com and allmovies.com. They provide content to just about everyone on the net. I was under the impression that OG got all their content from them. But that doesn't seem to be the case, they do get some. Here is the procedure I follow to obtain my covers.
1) Search allmusic or allmovie.com for the album/dvd.
2) right click on the cover and open its properties
3) copy the address (URL)
4) close the properties
5) paste the url into the browser
6) if music, replace cov200 with cov250
if dvd, replace cov150 with cov250
7) right click on the image and save it
While you are at it, might as well jot down the studio, length, year and genre information :)

DannyFresh 12-17-03, 06:13 PM I feel your pain, using the Entre to burn cd's is useless. It takes like 20 minutes to make a psyical copy of a cd. Don't waste your time, use your PC. Although the Entre has many useful abilities, burning cd's is not one of the. That is just my opinion. Also when I tried to "Copy" a cd, the Entre would not let me use regular cdr's I had to buy one the were "Digital Audio" recordables.......
Nick Satullo 12-17-03, 08:36 PM Tonight, I almost went berserk. I began to notice a video noisce, sort of a "herring bone" wave go through the picture (like an RF interference in a tv picture). I thought the culprit to be a new video processor I'd just implemented, fed to a CRT projector, but through process of elimination:
1. My component video source to the processor is all fed from an A/V processor, which functions as a switcher. The component video output of a different DVD player worked fine--into the same Lexicon MC-12, and into the same video processor, and then to the same CRT projector. Conclusion: It's none of those things.
2. The video from the Kenwood works fine, so long as I switch the input from it from component video to s-video.
Has anyone experienced this? I'm going to try the feed from my music Entre and, if it works fine, I'm going to go through the horrible process of swapping Entre units (and restoring each to factory defaults, which, with about 1600 discs in total--DVDs and CDs--is not a happy prospect.
Troubleshooting tips are welcome. Never experienced anything like this before.
Nick
Did you try different component cables? Sorry if that is a dumb question.
If you haven't, I would use the cables that you say works fine from the different dvd player.
I really like this method. I give it two thumbs up.

I've noticed video noise on the composite out but not the component out. As I very rarely ever use the composite for anything I have never tried to debug it though.

Adam Mrotek 12-19-03, 11:59 PM Wow, no posts in two days. I'm going through withdrawls.
Nick Satullo 12-20-03, 12:03 AM I had a way-too-long component video cable outputting from DVD changer 3 to input of DVD Changer 2 (in a three chain set, connected to the Entre).
Swapping out a higher quality, shorter length, cable has generally done the trick. I can still see the noise in some scenes where it's perfectly black, but it's really not otherwise noticeable.
But read my next post for the "new" problem, i.e., the Changers losing their settings.
Nick
Nick Satullo 12-20-03, 12:09 AM I set all of my changers thus:
16:9 Aspect ratio (not 4:3)
0 IRE (not 7.5 IRE)
PCM downmix OFF
Frequency/ Dynamic Range "wide"
Lately, I will notice that a picture looks skewed, perhaps squeezed too much, and my first instinct is to turn to the video processor, which has aspect ratio control. However, the problem has been that, somehow, the Changer loses the 16:9 setting and goes back to its default 4:3 setting.
When that happens, all my custom settings are lost. I have to stop the disc, and reset them. This is happening with some frequency, and it's happening on all three Changers.
Anyone else?

I've yet to blow a TDK at 4X but have blown one or two Imations using my Sony DRU500x.
The TDK -R also works well too. Verbatim is also good but slow to burn.
YMMV

Sorry I have been slow at responding to emails. I've been busy with the family (X-mas is just around the corner!!!). I've also been working on addressing some of the issues of DVDedit. I hope to have a much more stable build out around New Years.
Best wishes,

Lars158 12-21-03, 07:29 PM Nightowl, all,
I just installed the new VERY promising application "DVDEdit" to finally be able to modify and add missing cover art to the DVD entries in my Entre... However, I did run into a couple of problems that I hope someone on this forum can help me resolve.
When I am selecting a movie from the list and pressing ?Edit DVD Info? I get an alert box saying:
There was a problem trying to read:
Your Entre?s httpd service does not appear to be running.
Sorry, but you will not be able to retrieve coverart for now.
Another method Is currently being developed."
Also, when I go to File/"Upload Cover" I get another alert box saying:
"Run-time error '68': Device unavailable". When I press ok at this point the application craches.
Any ideas ??
Thanks, /Lars
Plano, TX
PS. NightOwl, this is really a very promising program that will make the Entre system 10 times better in my opinion!! I have been missing this ability since I got the Entre almost 2 years back... THANKS!

Currently, in order for me to retrieve coverart I need it to be enabled. When I coded the coverart retrieval code, I thought it was enabled by default... Hopefully I can fix these by this evening.

I just found out that I have this problem with my Entre... Was there any conclusion on how to enable this on the Entre ?
Thanks!

Ultimate Electronics are selling them for $299. I just bought one today for $270 (open box item).
NiteOwl 12-23-03, 01:12 AM Lars,
I have a few guys testing v2.3. If everything works out, I will post it tomorrow. I believe it addresses some, not all, of the issues you have. Although with httpd not being enabled on your Entre, you will not be able to retrieve coverart from the Entre. I should be done with the other method, using udp, by the 1st.
$299! Wow I feel ripped off. I paid about $399 like 3 months ago from Vanns.
Happy Holidays!

ScottF200 12-23-03, 09:29 AM IF you do NOT own an Axcess
AND
IF you use NiteOwl's DVDedit application
THEN
can someone confirm that they DO see the coverart in the application?
The coverart is being retrieved currently via HTTP GET (see prev post) and for a few it is not working (HTTP service not working on Entre). It is a mystery why it is not working for some.

Lucky you ... you can get that today! Just open up MS Excell and open your file: C:\Program Files\DVDedit\dvds.xml (or whereever your install directory is). Excel will understand and parse that XML file. You can then edit it however you'd like.

Would this then be the easiest path to manually importing the info into DVD Profiler? I know the fields in the two databases are different, but I would think there may be a method with copy and paste using Excel as a go-between. Is there a way to import an Excel file into XML, once edited to fit the DVD Profiler database format? Or should we just be patient and wait until after the Holidays, and which point NiteOwl may have more time to look into this?:)
Seriously, thanks for the great work!
Mike,
That xml file is just a listing of the dvd titles. There is one xml file that lists all the titles, and then there is an xml file for each individual dvd.

Mike,
I would guess that there will never be a method to get information from the Entre into DVD Profiler. I would think it may be the other way around in the future (DVD Profiler info into DVDedit) but I really don't know.
If you really want DVD Profiler updated I think you will need to do it manually because DVD Profiler wants to know the exact DVD you have (ie. UPC number). You can type in the UPC/title or put the DVD in your PC DVD transport and let it read it. I have also heard that a barcode scanner works with DVD Profiler to pick up the UPC number but I have never used this method. Perhaps just generically the bar code reader fills in whatever input field your cursor is on ... meaning it is not a function of DVD Profiler specifically.
Mike you are making good progress. Pretty soon I am going to see you auction off your entre :D
If anyone didn't follow that other thread on the Klaidescope, it seems that the reason they can copy dvds to the hard drive, without legal issues, is that they have paid large fees upfront to the movie association. That is why the system costs 30k.
The high price keeps it out of the hands of the masses, and the studios get paid upfront for the movies.
rbienstock 12-23-03, 01:08 PM We need to try to get to the bottom of why some people can get the cover art and some can't. Here are a few questions that perhaps the folks here who use DVDedit can answer:
[list=1]
Are you able to view cover art in DVDedit?
If you type http://999.999.999.999 [substiture the IP address of your Entre for 999.999.999.999], what happens?
What brand and model router/switch are you using?
Are you using static or dynamic IP address assignment on the Entre?
How are you connecting the Entre to your network (USB-ethernet, HPNA, other)?
How are you connecting the computer running DVDedit to your network (wired, wireless, other)?
Are you running any AntiVirus or Firewall software on the computer that you're using to run DVDedit?

tvanbusk 12-23-03, 04:34 PM Been lurking for a while in this thread, and thought I'd throw my two cents in to the http service issue. I'm able to use DVDEdit almost perfectly, and don't have an Axcess. However, (can't remember the setup screen at the moment) I did name my Entre on the one setup screen that prompts for it so an Axcess can access the unit. I wonder if putting a name in there turns on the service? (and that those that can't retrieve cover art don't have a name in there) I can check the particular screen name when I get home if it will help.

6. Wired

DannyFresh 12-23-03, 04:53 PM I am interested in purchasing an AXXESS ........ Where is Untimate Electronics????????
Lars158 12-23-03, 04:53 PM I have noticed that I can only access the HTTPD on the secondary IP configured on the Entre (the dedicated LAN connection). I did not have the secondary connection configured before I got the Axcess, so in addition to adding the Axcess to the network I also configured the secondary IP...
My guess - the HTTPD inteface is always active but only on the LAN (secondary IP) connection, which all Axcess users have configured - but non-Axcess users may or may not have.
To test this I disconnected my Axcess and rebooted the Entre. After the Entre came back up I again tried to access the secondary IP and it still have HTTPD active !! I also successfully uploaded cover art with the DVDEdit application.
I think (hope) the mystery is solved ;)

We have several of those stores in the Dallas area. You can also get them from their web page (ultimateelectronics.com)
Lars158 12-23-03, 04:59 PM Have anyone been successful in changing cover art with the DVDEdit application? Each time I try I get a run time error and the application dies (run-time error '68'). I am wondering if it is a configuration problem on my PC or if it is something others have experienced also...
DannyFresh 12-23-03, 06:59 PM Lars, I can't seem to purchase one online are you sure this is possible????
Nick Satullo 12-23-03, 07:31 PM The changers and the Entre are now discontinued, so says Kenwood technical support. However, he was quick to add that Kenwood would continue to "support" the Entre (but then he knew he was talking to the person that Kenwood had formerly considered to be The Great Satan).
Mum, the usual word, was given on whether anything of like kind would replace them.
For the hard cores on the board, I'd suggest stocking up on replacement parts (substitute Entres and DVD changers). Of course, CES could demonstrate that Kenwood will take it to the next level, but I somehow doubt that. We were probably lucky that it got taken this far.
I sure hope that Escient/OpenGlobe continues to support the database, or all falls to Joe's program. This is perfectly rotten news, isn't it?

Here's the trick to enabling httpd (thanks Lars for pointing the way):

3. Enjoy working with cover art in DVDedit.

I've edited two covers so far without error.
Lars,
We are up to version 2.3. What he has on his website, may not be up to date. I suggest you pm him so he can send you the latest executable.
Or pm me with you email address and I will send it to you.
Can you explain what the difference is between the 1st and 2nd connections on the entre? I have both set to dynamic, but does that mean that the entre will get assigned two ip addresses?
my axcess unit does not autoconfigure, and i get the feeling it's due to that secondary connection. I can't even ping the axcess unit. Can you ping it?
thxs.

i guess that explains the flood of changers on ebay.
i guess time to seriously begin building that htpc.
i think we are safe on the open globe side since it's also going to feed the escient product.

The changers and the Entre are now discontinued, so says Kenwood technical support.

Nick Satullo 12-23-03, 10:56 PM What type of HPNA/Ethernet Bridge did you use? Could that be your problem?
Nick
I use the linksys and i believe they only have one model of the hpna bridge.
i called kenwood today to verify that i have to ship the axcess back to california for service, and i got that annoying message that they were out to lunch. that still blows my mind :D

Hi Danny, I am not sure you can actually order it online, but they do have it listed on their web site at the following address :
http://www.ultimateelectronics.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=422&itemType=PRODUCT&RS=1&keyword=axcess
Give them a call to find out how/if you can order it short of going to one of their stores...
Good luck, /Lars

Hi Sloco, I got v2.32 from Jose, but I still have the same problem. Is anyone else using Windows XP Professional ? I am thinking may be there is a compatibility issue with the OS or some other application I have installed on my system... I have installed DVDEdit on 2 different PC's on my network and I get the same run-time error when I am trying to edit cover art.
I also have both the primary and secondary IP connection set to dynamic. I can see on the DHCP client table that 2 IP addresses are assigned to the Entre (the second one got assigned when I configured the secondary IP). When I try to access the primary one with "http://192.168.1.xxx" I get the HTTP 404 error (page can not be found), whereas when I try to access the other IP with "http://192.168.1.yyy" I get the 403 Forbidden fault code for HTTPD access (THTTPD [OG/C++ v1.3]), which indicates that the HTTPD application is running on that address.
I can not ping the Axcess unit either, so that seems to be ok (everything is working fine on my Axcess). I have both the primary and secondary connection configured for "Ethernet" (USB).
Regards, /Lars
NiteOwl 12-24-03, 02:51 AM Lars,
I suspect that the runtime error you are getting is due to a bad path saved to the registry, maybe a cd or dvd drive which no longer has the media in it?
I am now catching that error. I will post a new version tomorrow morning.
Also, a big thanks to Robert and yourself! Figuring out why httpd was unreachable was great detective work! I had been scratching my head for a while as to why the it was unreachable, yet the Entre's config files all showed them as being active. You guys saved me a tremendous deal of trouble not having to code the udp coverart retrieval code.

3. Enjoy working with cover art in DVDedit.
Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night. rbienstock,THANK YOU! For two months I have been trying to figure out why I have to reboot the entre every time I search for cover art. I did have the tcp/ip settings the same but I never changed the connection to Ethernet. I knew it would be something simple when the problem was found. Thanks again.

Yeah, this whole configuration system is totally stupid. Bad enough that you have to configure primary and secondary separately when they need to be identical, but even worse that you have to turn them on separately and that the turn-on screen is on an entirely different menu. Just as an experiment, try assigning the identical static configuration to both primary and secondary and see if that fixes it. FWIW, I am using XP Pro. I assume that you are logged in with admin rights.

AAAARRRGGGHHH!!!!! It's either stupid or ingenious. It seems the primary is used for the Entre to talk to the outside world (ie. Openglobe site) and that secondary is used for your local LAN. ie. (Entre talking to Axcess) or (Axcess talking to Entre or MM talking to Entre). By having them separate you could customize their setup and security (firewall/hub) differently. After seeing some inards and playing with the Entre for a couple years, I have a lot of respect for what these guys have done. Regardless, you guys have provided some great tips.
Even if the Axcess devices are modest in what they do we can be glad that they exist so we discover (then access) a variety of features (i.e. FTPD / HTTPD).
For a while I had my primary using the USB/Ethernet connection and my secondary using HPNA. Both of mine are using HPNA now, however, and I don't recall why I changed it. That was pre-DVDedit, however, so I don't know if HTTPD was active even when they are different. I'd play but I've mostly learned to leave well enough alone with networking options once they are setup and working.:)
thxs Scott. that is what i was guessing the purpose was.
you might have changed it because the instructions on the axcess says to make them the same.
any ideas why the axcess can't be pingable? i thought all the devices on the network would be pingable if they had an ip address.
maybe apnar can answer that.

maybe apnar can answer that. My axcess worked before I changed it. I think it stopped working one day for no apparent reason and I changed them both to HPNA then never bothered changing them back.
I don't know why the Axcess is not pingable. It puzzled me for a while then I learned to ignore it <grin>. Perhaps because it is going through a bridge and it drops those types of packets (ICMP?).
Lars158 12-24-03, 12:32 PM We just discovered that the run-time error 68 happens when you don't have a "C:" drive present on your PC... I have several local hard drives on my main PC but none of them are designated as the C: drive. Joe is looking at modifying/changing the component that is doing the drive selection so that it does not require a C: drive present. I added a dummy C: drive to my main PC, and sure enough it then worked... ;)
sbonaparte 12-24-03, 01:44 PM My axcess units have always been pingable (I have 2)... I do have them both manually configured..
I did notice that ( I have a Netgear HPNA bridge ) when I plug my Netgear into my Linksys 8port hub/router I works great but when I plug into either my:
Netgrearg 4-port wireless router/switch
Linksys 5-port switch standalone
I have problem with connections dropping and/or can not find server messages.
I am one of the people that can NOT get DVDEdit to work at all, it downloads my titles list then freezes at "Waiting Genre information". I am working with Sampo to figure this out we have made some progress.. Great guy ..
the nerve of you not having a c: drive what a rebel. don't you know it's good to be a conformist ;)
DannyFresh 12-24-03, 03:39 PM Why, after uploading new cover art, and selecting it on the Entre to reflect the specific disc, does DVDEdit not reflect the changes made?? I have uploaded and selected all unknown disc's on the Entre. It is 100% up to date with all correct images for cover art. When I use DVDEdit to browse around the Entre's art many disc's come up with the generic "OpenGlobe" default, like no coverart was available.... Any Help????
I'm not sure about your problem, but with DVDedit, you don't need to use the entre to link cover art with dvds. It does it for you. But first make sure you have the latest exe. One of the versions, was referencing NiteOwl's entre, instead of your own.
NiteOwl 12-24-03, 04:35 PM Have you refreshed the DVD list? Remember that DVDedit gets its initial list upon startup. If you modify a dvd afterwards, you need to refresh so the changes come over.

Wayne Zworld 12-24-03, 08:14 PM You guys are the best, just did the primary/secondary config and NASA we have cover-art now.. I’m still getting the Run-time error ‘76’ Path not found, when I click on upload cover or change cover. Any ideas?

PS: running 2.32 and ME
sbonaparte 12-24-03, 09:31 PM OK I set the Primary/Secondary network connects that same and I am using the 2.32v of DVDedit/ But now my unit reboots when I attempt to upload new cover art and update DVD info.
It get to about 80%+ complete with the upload then the Entre reboots. After the reboot I did see the update of one of the DVD's.
Any takers??

I have been looking at the 5900 recevier to complete the system. I was just hoping that they won't come out with a all in one 7.1 reciever or a newer unit with additive features or something.

You may not have long to wait. CES is only weeks away, and that will hopefully lend some insight into Kenwood's plans. I personally wonder if they've just dropped the entire Sovereign line.
If they have, then it's truly unfortunate. Kenwood surely lost money on the project, and a number of factors were the likely contributors. My own opinion is that timing was the critical issue--they probably came out with it two years too soon, since the "logic" of DVD changers only begins to have appeal once you've collected a library of discs.
For those of us fortunate enough to have stuck it out (and any doubts that I might have had regarding holding Kenwood's feet to the fire over this past summer, are now completely gone) we have systems that, once gone, you really can't do without--when I only had one Entre, I had to revert to the horrid menu system in the Changer itself, and I speak from experience. However, if Kenwood is out of the Controller/Changer business, then the only real alternative is the Escient/Sony combination, at least until someone else decides to jump in.
I hope Kenwood plans a second generation, but that's not the way it's looking or sounding. When they broke down and offered the updates, I heard some snip-snip noises, usually associated with the cutting of losses.
Nick
i totally agree, but have to add, that even if you see the logic of the dvd changers, the price has to be right. the sony sells a 400 disc changer for under $300 I think. they are probably going to own this market since pioneer still doesn't have a progressive mega changer or one with 400 capacity.
i'm sure that a lot of people who wish they could own the entre/5900 combo are now eagerly checking ebay everyday waiting for the day they see a great steal.
maybe kenwood is going to abandon the home market and just concentrate on the automobile and satellite radio where i think they are doing well.
even if Kenwood does offer a 2nd generation, i dont see giving them anymore business. they just don't seem to be a serious company focused on quality.
hopefully they learned their lesson, and if there is a second effort in the future, that they do their own code and not rely on escient. why even bother with open globe? if mario from dvdlobby was able to add internet lookup of dvds to his product, surely it could have been done by Kenwood.
NiteOwl 12-25-03, 02:23 PM Take into consideration that to Kenwood it probably looked like a good deal (at that time). They figured no R&D costs by simply partnering with the likes of Escient and OpenGlobe. Low and behold, the product didn't even come close to making good on promises. I too hope Kenwood doesn't pull out. I think the entire package (mega changer, entre, receiver, remote, and axcess) is extremely worth the hassle. If anything, they need to rethink pricing (maybe the "make more in volume" model?!). If I were running Kenwood, it be focusing on trying to maintain, and hopefully grow, market share. Also put more $$ into technical support - this out to lunch message doesn't sit well with your clients. First impression is who the hell they outsource technical support too?! Face it this is only a niche right now, I believe this market will explode within 2 years. If they add a PVR feature (like TiVO) to the next generation Entre that would be the KILLER. Most importantly drop OG!! No more ads!!! We do not pay good money to get advertised to!!! OG is the weak link in the chain. It is aggrevating to have to post that a DVD is not identified. How hard is it to house your own server and license AMG's data?! Why bother reinventing the wheel.
NiteOwl 12-25-03, 02:33 PM Guys,
Since this product line might be discontinued... I might have to purchase another mega changer now. I'm about 75% capacity of my 5050m. Considering that the 5900 is about twice as much than the 5050m, is it worth buying? I don't listen to DVD Audio. The only other thing that looks attractive is the faroudja processing? Can you notice a difference (image quality wise) when using SVideo with faroudja? I have a rear projection TV that is about 5 years old. It doesn't have components. Is it worth to invest in the 5900, since I might purchase a projector in the near future?
sbonaparte 12-25-03, 02:54 PM My Opinion Kenwood is listening..
Dependent on Patient issues Kenwood should change the guts of the Entre and start using an OpenLinux OS. There are many developers that exist and almost any hardware guts can be used ( using standard industry hardware can cut down on pricing and allows for more competitive vendor component pricing ). The flexible OS and standard hardware (USB, HD's, Wireless, etc.. ) will also allow for maximum updates (TV Recording, MP3 format changes, external hardaware add -ons, Movie Downloads, etc.. ). Settop box's that control everything or can cross communicate to other products is what everyone is looking for in the future ( of course there is line to everything in one box that people want ). You can build your own now by piecing certain products and sourceforge applications together ( DVArchive for ReplayTV, etc.. )
I do not truly understand development costs but a low monthly subscription or add-on product upgrade charges or something where they can make future development monies using and open platform.
The unit is ahead of it's time but right now if advertised will be the BIG THING especially since the SONY MEGA changer is now at s standard market price.
audiovideo outlet on ebay is blowing out the 5900 on ebay for $750 with buy now, and about $530 for the 5050m with buy now. they seem to have a steady supply of them.
carbo i believe owned both, and he said the quality was much better with faroudja processing on the 5900. but i don't think he used svideo.
i will stay with the 2 5900ms with the 2nd one 50 percent. i don't want to invest anymore in kenwood unless they come down even more.
even the axcess has been a disappointment. hopefully it can be repaired and not some weird bug with my setup. it keeps losing it's configuration so there is no instant gratification when you want to listen to music. you have to sit there and go through all the tcpip menus and then wait for the software to load before you can use it.
So every single kenwood product i bought, has had a problem. my first changer had to be sent to repair. the entre had a drive crash, and the second changer i returned because of the eject button. the replacement came with the loud noise with the spinning of the carousel and after a month or two, the eject stopped working.
http://cgi.*********/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3067369085&category=50600
i feel like an abuse victim. the more abuse i go through the closer i feel to kenwood :D

I own both, but don't use the progressive scan feature (because I use an outboard processor)--but if you're going to be getting a projector, and if you've ruled out an outboard video processor (and the used Faroudja NRS models are now starting to get sold at attractive prices), the Faroudja processing will probably make a slightly noticeable difference, although I'm certain that the 5050 is very good, too.
If you do not want the DVD-Audio feature, then by all means opt for the 5050. That was the only reason I ever bought a 5900.

I have 2 5900 and 1 5050. I use component so I am not sure about the s-video and I have a toshiba 65" rear projection tv. The picture on the 5900 is far better than the 5050. The 5050 is softer and I only use it for music or regular cds. The 5900 holds all my movies and a few DVD-audios that I own. I would compare the 5050s picture with that of my old Toshiba 9000 dvd player. When I first purchased the 5900 and used it side by side with my Tosh 9000 I was blown away and later purchased the 5050 expecting the same picture. Not even close. Its a very good player but the 5900 is better, unless you use and outboard proc like many are. Then I would say go with the cheaper 5050.

Yes, I have the latest executeable. Yes I refresh the DVD list after I make changes. That does not seem to matter. I still have to power on the Entre and manualy select cover art from the select cover art screen in order to reference art to disc. After I make those changes they never appear in DVDEdit???? I can't understand why?????
DannyFresh 12-26-03, 04:40 PM I have noticed files saved as .jpg (Lowercase) will work and be recognized by DVDEdit. rbienstock 12-26-03, 11:23 PM Try this if you're interested in seeing how stupid the Entre's OG lookup is: pick any disk with two or more words in the title that has been successfully found by the Entre. Go into Options>Edit disk and go to the Title field and insert a space between the first and second words (i.e., change "Gone With the Wind" to "Gone With the Wind"). Then do a search on the title. Every time I've tried this, the disk isn't found. Delete the extra space, and the disk gets found. I can't remember using another program that has actually parsed spaces since the early '80s. Simply amazing!

If you are using Photoshop, there is an option to always use lowercase extensions when you save. See attached image. I highlighted the area in green at the bottom. If not, you should be able to just retype the extension in lowercase when you save. You might need to turn on "Show extensions for know file types" in your Windows folder options on the View tab.

mikemav 12-27-03, 01:28 PM I am using DVD Edit to change cover art. My connections are HPNA. DVD Edit retrieves my data from the Entre fine, and I had been able to change cover art on a previous version. I now have 2.35 (or whatever is current as of today on the geocities web page) and when I go to change cover art, it just stays put with the message at the bottom "preparing to upload XML and/or cover art.." I let it go for 10 minutes or so and nothing. The cover I got from the AllDVD web trick (cover 250..) so it is about 250x353, 16kb file. It is named with lower case .jpg. It shows up fine in the edit dvd window, but when I click save and upload changes, this is when I get this hanging status line at the bottom and no movement. If I click edit again, I can get out of it, but I cannot get the changes to stick. any ideas?
NiteOwl 12-27-03, 03:33 PM Mike,
Reboot your Entre. The problem is that the Entre is not giving me the "go ahead" to proceed. Rebooting fixes this problem. I have added verbage to the latest version to make people aware of this issue.

Mathazar 12-28-03, 01:23 AM After using and loving my 5900M for 2 years, I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on a refurbed Entre and a 2nd 5900M (I never thought I'd surpass 400 discs but I did just that within a year of having the 5900M). I've read a hundred or so pages of this forum so forgive me if this is answered somewhere, but I know you guys love the Sovereign line and probably don't mind steering me in the right direction.
1 - I don't really have a need for a hard disk-based music system for my home theater and I don't use the 5900M for CDs. Is the Entre still worth it to you guys just as a front-end with DVD cover art for the 5900M? I'm thinking yes, but I could use a little reassurance. :)
2 - One thing, among many others, that has ticked me off about the 5900M menu system is the inability to sort the stored titles alphabetically - it sorts strictly by Slot # (tho you can manually put titles in genres or groups). Does the Entre sort titles alphabetically regardless of Slot #?
3 - With daisy-chained 5900's, do the DVD titles stored in both units appear in one menu on the Entre (alphabetized, hopefully) or are the units treated with separate Entre menus?
4 - The 5900M I've had for 2 years has the original firmware in it and runs great - I shudder reading some of the horror stories in this forum and count my blessings that glitches on my unit are few and far between! Assuming the 2nd unit I purchase has the latest firmware in it, will I still need to send the 1st unit back to Kenwood for an upgrade or can it work with the older firmware if it's put in a particular position for daisychaining (primary/secondary)?
5 - I have a Linksys WAP11 wireless network set up in my house and plan on using a Linksys WET11 bridge for the Entre. From what I've read about the Entre, it appears that I'll need a USB to Ethernet converter to get it on an Ethernet network, wired or wireless. Can someone recommend a product or part number for the converter? I'd rather buy something that someone has proven to work with the Entre already.
6 - With the Dual 5900Ms daisychained, will the second unit's IR sensor need to be accessible for the remote or can the IR commands be passed thru the 1st unit on to the 2nd unit? I plan on putting the 2nd unit in the bottom of my equipment rack (obstructed view from the seating area). I hope it can operate that way, or else I'll have to rig up another IR flasher and I'm out of flasher ports on my Niles remote IR system.
Thanx in advance for any help you guys can provide.
Regards,
Kris

Nick Satullo 12-28-03, 10:06 AM It used to be that you could access your OpenGlobe account via https://www.openglobe.net/kenwood/Login.asp?Mode=S
That was the only scenario in which OpenGlobe ever called for usernames or passwords, to the best of my knowledge. Your username or login (I don't know if I ever assigned a separate username) were obtained from the system information in your Entre.
Today, I tried to have my Music Entre look up some discs which it had inexplicably forgotten (some DVDs). The DVDs included some that Entre had successfully looked up before, and obtained cover art and other information.
The message I got was "could not log in to OpenGlobe." I assumed there was an internet issue, but I was connected, and the other computers in my home could get out to the net, and we're all on the same LAN.
I decided to try to access OpenGlobe itself, and tried a "search" for an artist. The message I got back was that I was trying to access a service that was restricted to those with OpenGlobe subscriptions. I was then presented with a prompt to identify my username and password. I tried the "login" name from my Entre, and the password there, but it failed. There is apparently another username that OpenGlobe has me down for, and it's also apparently not my name or email address, since it didn't recognize either.
I tried duplicating this with my Movies Entre, but, there, I didn't run into troubles.
I hope this is not a harbinger of things to come, particularly with the news that the changers and the Entre have been discontinued.

Yes, the Entre sorts titles alphabetically regardless of slot #. The upgraded changers also allow you to sort alphabetically or by Slot # in the changer's menu as well.
3 - With daisy-chained 5900's, do the DVD titles stored in both units appear in one menu on the Entre (alphabetized, hopefully) or are the units treated with separate Entre menus?
One menu, all alphabetized, just as you hoped.
It must be upgraded...Sorry.
That's all I can answer that I am certain about.

I'll answer my own question. Somehow (perhaps from excessive rebooting of the unit, to clear the way for DVDedit) I lost my registration with OpenGlobe. I took the unit through a 5555 forced re-registration, and all is now well.

NiteOwl 12-28-03, 08:15 PM Mathazar,
Both Changers have to have the latest firmware upgrade for them to work with the Entre. I tell you this from experience. I just bought a second 5050m this weekend. My original was v1, the new one is v3. No matter what configuration (new one as main, or sub) the sub will not inform the Entre of new disks in the slots unless it has the serial cable connected directly into it. I guess this is what the upgrade solves. It must send the "new slot map" via the daisy chain cable and through the main changer's serial cable.
I was thinking about purchasing a serial splitter (y type of connector) and see if that solves the issue. But I have to hunt one down, by the time I get it I can probably get the changer back from Kenwood.
I am shipping my old changer for the upgrade as soon as I can get Tech Support on the phone.

RichardSP 12-28-03, 11:14 PM I have 3 Kenwood DV-5900s and an Entre, all daisy chained. I just plugged them in after getting the upgrade about 2 weeks ago (moved... built custom rack... etc... it's a long story).
After the Entre looked everything up, I tried to play a CD. No music came out. I looked in the rack, and my #1 player was making grinding noises, then it did a disc flip, then grinding again. It finally gave up, but now it wont play, I can't figure out how to get the CD back out of the slot, and I don't have access to my #2 & 3 changers because I'm afraid to turn #1 back on.
What should I do?
Thanks for any help

mikemav 12-29-03, 09:41 AM Well guys, it has been nice, but I think it is time for me to move on. I may regret this, but I want to try the HTPC route. I am offering my full Entre package....Entre, one upgraded DV5900M changer (factory upgrade to support multiple changers) and VR5700 receiver. All are working perfectly and have had no problems. Even eject still works on the changer. I bought them wholesale a couple of years ago from my employer so I do not have as much invested as most, so I will be offering what I think is a great price. I would like to sell all three as a package. PM me if you are interested. I will wait a while before I list this elsewhere. Thanks
NiteOwl 12-29-03, 12:37 PM Richard,
Scott is right (then again when isn't he?!?) A surely disc must have fell out of its slot. This has happened to me twice. There are 3 screws on left and right sides and about 5 (i think) on the back. When you remove the screws, stand behind the changer and pull back of the cover up and then towards you. do the reverse to put it back in. really simple. It was nice of Kenwood to not put lame WARRANTY VOID stickers to detect if you opened the cover!
Most importantly... BE SURE EVERYTHING IS DISCONNECTED FIRST including the power.
-NiteOwl
Lars158 12-29-03, 01:21 PM I also had this problem happen several times on one of my 5900's. I decided to send it in for repair work (for this reason and that I sometime got the "unrecognized disc" screen with a disc flip). The Kenwood service center seems to know what the problem is and they are now waiting for a spare part from Japan (good thing I had this player still under warranty)... I sure hope the jam issue is resolved when I get back the player!
NiteOwl 12-29-03, 08:23 PM Well,
I haven't had any problem in over 6 months. I am sure it was freak thing, else it would continue. I hope its not something physically wrong with yours.

K_Thompson 12-30-03, 04:12 PM For those of you that bought the 5900M listed on ebay, did you pay while going through the "buy it now" process or did you wait to hear from the seller? I bought one, but I haven't paid for it yet. I've never used ebay or paypal before so I'm a little nervous, but I did set up an account for both.
Has the seller contacted any of you yet?
I just got a new 5900M for Christmas and I really like it. I'll probably want to pick up a couple more to daisy chain together. How do I know if my unit has the latest firmware that allows the units to be connected together?
Mathazar 12-30-03, 06:13 PM How do I know if my unit has the latest firmware that allows the units to be connected together?
Hold the STOP button on the 5900M front panel and press "0" on the remote. The 5900M's display will show you a series of sets of numbers. Upgraded units display something like this:
M3-0515-01
S3-0427-01
DV-0312-01
The key numbers, apparantly, are the "3"s in the first sets of numbers. I believe those indicate that the unit is upgraded.
My 2 year old 5900M shows this set of numbers:
M2-0010-01
S1-1114-01
DA2-0129-01
TI1-0803-17
That indicates the older firmware and I'll be arranging to send the unit to Kenwood to get updated in a week or so after I pull out the 400 discs and put them in a newly updated 5900M on it's way to me now. Can't wait to daisy-chain....never thought I'd use the entire capacity of one player but 18 months later, I need another one!

Turin2006 12-30-03, 07:08 PM K-Thompson, if you purchased the unit from audio-video-outlet, you will shortly receive an email from him with payment instructions (I waited for his email as well before settling via PayPal).
He is very responsive. He ships UPS (which will not pickup tomorrow due to the New Year holiday). I would assume he'll ship your unit on Friday and you will receive it in about 4 business days if you are located in So. Cal. like me.

Thanks for the info. I did order from audio-video-outlet and I am in So. Cal., about 90 minutes or so north of LA. I just got the email asking for payment so I guess I'll go ahead and send it in now.
RichardSP 12-31-03, 02:46 AM Thanks for the advice on opening my 5900. It had scooped up two CDs. I managed to get them out (while keeping all the disks in order for the Entre!) and it works fine.

Todd Wikel 12-31-03, 12:21 PM Just got a demo entre/5900M and need some help resetting it back to factory default (5555). Could someone got through the process step by step?
Software version: 1.1.0.10
PIC Version 10
Bootloader Version :1.12
I have a unknown rating password that is programmed and i'm having major connectivity issues trying to update the software so i can use the Linksys 100TX USB adapter.
Getting lots of dropped connects and unable to upgrade software problems
Any ideas on the connectivity (dial-up) issues?

Go to setup. You'll see the black screen with choices for changer management, internet connections, etc.
From that display, enter 5555 on the Entre remote.
That will take you to a menu of three options, one of which is resetting to factory default. Choose that.
Going back to factory default takes a little time. However, once it's there, you'll then need to go through all the steps of setting up the Entre anew, i.e. internet connections, IP address (static or dynamic), and all else that gets called for.
The very first thing you need to do, after setup, is to download the current software. Factory default will take you to version 1.01, whereas we're now at 2.0.8.
Good luck.
Nick
NiteOwl 12-31-03, 02:48 PM Todd,
First of all, v1.1 has limited support for usb adapters. I use the same usb adapter and it wasn't supported until 1.2(i think). You may need to use dialup to obtain the upgraded version. As far as resetting to factory default, v1 doesn't need the 5555 code. I believe the SETUP screen has an option to reset to factory. v2 is when they hid this feature in the 5555 screen.
If I were you, I'd backup v1.1 first. Prior to v2, versions had support for Sony DVD changers. You never know if you will need that, specially now that Kenwood has "discontinued" theirs. FYI... Blocking outgoing port 80 from the Entre prevents it from obtaining an upgrade.

DannyFresh 12-31-03, 04:52 PM NightOwl, I was using DVDEdit to fill in dvd info that was missing. It was working fine, but now when I start the program or do a query, it says "Received Last Packet" at the bottom and hangs.... Any Ideas???
Mathazar 01-01-04, 12:53 AM Looking for some help - hopefully, I've overlooked something obvious.
I received a new (new to me) Entre today and I'm trying to control my 5900M with it. The Entre has the latest 2.0.0.8 firmware and the 5900M has the upgraded series "3" firmware in it. The Entre installation went rather smooth and is online with OpenGlobe via wireless ethernet. Before I load up all 400 discs in the changer, I'm testing a sample of 20 DVDs. Out of the 20, OG got art and info for all but one (Absolute Power) and I was able to use DVDedit to update that info manually. During the disc lookup, it loaded and read the discs just fine to pull down the disc info from OG.
The problem - Entre will not control the 5900M load and play functions. I select a DVD from the Entre movie guide, the video switches over to the 5900M, but the selected disc does not load or play. The RS232 connection seems to be working well enough - it finds the changer, inventories the discs, and Entre complains that the changer went off line if I disconnect the cable live. For grins, I tried 2 different cables (one that came with the Entre and the one that came with the 5900M). The unit is not daisy-chained (yet) and is set to "Main". It responds to commands just fine via it's remote control.
Any ideas?
Thanx,
Kris

The RS232 connection seems to be working well enough <snip> That is a puzzler. You've done some good detective work. The fact that the Entre switches to the video from the guide would certainly indicate it is doing it's job. You physical connection between the devices sound like it is working. A couple suggestions that others will certainly add to.
a) Try a CD instead of a DVD just to see if that plays
b) Try resetting the 5900 with the "library" or "user file" button. See this post (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?postid=2607039#post2607039)
c) I don't much about the RS232 physical/electronic connection and control but is is possible that 1 pin in bent over which is not used for the other communication aspects that are working for you?
d) There have been references to people figuring out the RS232 commands and having software to send them from their PC/laptop to the 5900M. If you tried that then you would know if it is the 5900m not respondiing to the "play" command ... ie. either from the Entre or from the PC
e) Try the tech support...sometimes you may get lucky and talk to a tech that has seen/heard of the problem. 1-800-536-9663, opt 1, then ext 8500. California time 10:30am - 6pm
DannyFresh 01-01-04, 11:44 AM DVDEdit is working again for me... After a few reboots, a library index rebuild and a re registration, the unit still would not respond. After I made some changes from the Entre itself, DVDEdit started working again.....
DannyFresh 01-01-04, 11:47 AM Scott, I was wondering if you received your 5900m from av outlet?? If so was it in good condition??? I know they are refurbished units he is selling, but says they are V3.

Scott, I was wondering if you received your 5900m from av outlet?? If so was it in good condition??? I know they are refurbished units he is selling, but says they are V3. The units were not going to ship until the 6th. I ended up backing out of that sale. He (Jamal) had a 7 day grace period and was really cool about it. He seems like a genuinely good person and credited me back promptly. I got a little nervious because of the mechnaical aspects of this machine. It seems that all refurb units come with a 90 day warranty. The kicker is that his prices are outstanding (~$750+30s&h). Compare them to other "official" Kenwood outlet stores (http://www.kenwoodusa.com/support/outlet_stores.jsp) even. NiteOwl did clue me in that some places offer extended warranties for a price which may be a good option. I may still go with Jamal and just take that risk. I would put all my DVDs in the new changer and uses it extensively in the first 90 days hoping to rule out any problems.
The local authorized dealer that I got my Axcess unit from tells me the MSRP is $1200 (lowered when?) for the new ones which they knock off 10%. He was going to call his KW rep because he had not been told they discontinued the sovereign line?!? He was going to check if he could get a refurb unit. I'll decide in a few days and pull the trigger one way or the other.
Mathazar 01-01-04, 01:25 PM Dang, Scott! If I've puzzled you, I'm afraid I may be in trouble. :)
Try a CD instead of a DVD just to see if that plays Same thing - control not given over to the changer. The Entre screen goes to the CD track list as if it's playing, but the changer isn't doing anything. OG found the CD just fine.
Try resetting the 5900 with the "library" or "user file" button.
I tried the User File thing this morning and didn't think to try the Library method until I read your post. Unfortunately, neither changed the symptoms.
is is possible that 1 pin in bent over which is not used for the other communication aspects that are working for you?
All 9 pins on both the Entre and 5900M are straight and true. I have two RS232C cables and I tried both so I doubt there's a broken line in the cable.
There have been references to people figuring out the RS232 commands and having software to send them from their PC/laptop to the 5900M. If you tried that then you would know if it is the 5900m not respondiing to the "play" command ... ie. either from the Entre or from the PC
Unfortunately, I'm not a programmer but if anyone out there has a little app they've done already to test this, I'd be willing to give it a shot.
Try the tech support
Sigh...I was hoping not to have to go that route but I guess I must. Thanx a bunch for the phone number and ext. - that will save me some time. I hope they're open for biz. tomorrow....

Kris
NiteOwl 01-01-04, 01:57 PM If the Entre won't control the changer, just go to your Entre's Audio Video Settings/Audio Input Settings and set one of the options to to changer. I don't know why that is, but it fixed it for me. I remember running into this when I first got my Entre.
NiteOwl 01-01-04, 02:00 PM Scott,
Have you asked Jamal if he can get you the extended warranty? He might be getting them from the same source. Just a thought.

Mathazar 01-01-04, 02:12 PM just go to your Entre's AV setup and tell it that one of your inputs is the changer. I don't know why that is, but it fixed it for me. I remember running into this when I first got my Entre.
Kudos to NiteOwl!!! Changing that setting didn't seem applicable to me for changer control since the Entre menu on that AV page is for audio only, but go figure. My changer control is now working! Thanx you, NiteOwl (and Scott) - this has been driving me crazy since 1am. :)

NiteOwl 01-01-04, 02:19 PM You might have noticed that now you EXTERNAL in your MUSIC menu. If you play with the AUDIO INPUT SETTINGs you can have it still work and not have EXTERNAL in the menu. I have everything set to NONE except for the optical input. Optical input is set to CHANGER. I don't remember if I have it in the menu, but there is a way to remove it... Maybe output to changer and all the inputs to none... don't remember.
Happy New Year!
ScottF200 01-01-04, 11:36 PM Re: Entre controlling changer
Kris, glad you got that working. I set mine up 2 years ago and must have purged that info...weird as it was. Glad NiteOwl had more recent memories. Enjoy!
Re: Warranty
NiteOwl, I didn't ask Jamal but we did talk about warranty coverage and I'm sure if he had that option it would have only made sense for him to offer it to me as those types of things are generally gravy $.
Re: Discontinued Sovereign lineup

Since CES is soon I'm sure we will get more details from Nick our embedded reporter attending.
He still wants to only give me 10% off MSRP of $1200 (used to be $1500 as I recall).

I am crossing my fingers that the new changer to be released will have SACD support with iLink/firewire connectivity and still be compatible with the Entre!!
DigitalGriffin 01-02-04, 03:26 PM With all the quality issues they had with the first one (and considering how soon they are prone to break down.) Is anybody who bought the first series of sovereign really going to buy the second?
Mine lasted 26 months. The eject broke, keyboard broke, and "Unrecognized Disc" transport problem broke TWICE! Now I have to replace it.
That's $692/year not including the entre` and repair cost.
I'm not going to be Kenwoods *itch ever again with their poor products and service.
Turin2006 01-02-04, 03:35 PM As soon as it arrives, and assuming it is indeed an upgraded unit as represented by the eBay seller I purchased the unit from, I will be daisy chaining a dv-5050m to my current 5900m / Entre setup. I have a couple of questions related to the daisy chain process.
1 - How long is the system control cable provided by Kenwood with their changer. Due to my setup, I will have to place the new unit on the rack opposite my 65" RPTV, which means I will need about 9-10' of connecting cable(s) between existing 5900m and new 5050m. If the cable provided is shorter - which I am quite sure is the case - where would I be able to purchase a compatible one of the length I need.
2 - Currently, the digital audio xfers between changer-Entre and Entre-receiver are all via optical / Toslink cable (plus the 6-ch analog runs, which of course will not apply to the 5050m unit I am receiving). I do not see an optical "IN" on the back of either 5900m or 5050m, only a coaxial IN. To daisy chain the 5050 to the 5900, do I use coaxial OUT on the 5050 to coaxial IN on the 5900 and leave the rest of the setup unchanged, or will I have to switch everything else from 5900 to receiver from optical to coaxial as well? I would hope not, but I am not clear whether digital audio fed via coaxial IN is output to both coaxial and optical OUTs of the 5900m.
3 - The 5050m will be strictly for playback of music CD's, all my DVDs and DVD Audios will be stored in the 5900m. I don't need to daisy chain the component video from 5050 to 5900, do I? A 10'-long component cable is kinda expensive, and unless you can think of a reason why I REALLY need it...
4 - I think this has been asked before, but I cannot find the answer. Are the remote IR commands sent to the 5900 the same as the 5050? If so, how do you avoid sending IR commands to the wrong unit when both are within striking distance of the remote control? Can the IR eye on the 5050 be blocked out, since all the audio CD playback commands will likely be sent via the Entre'?
Thanks.

Umberto
Umberto,
1. The cable is definitely not long enough. It is about 3 maybe 4 feet long. I would think any radio shack or the like would carry this cable.
2. I run my audio from changer to changer with the coaxial then directly to the receiver and then a optical from the entre to the receiver.
3. I don't think you need to run the component at all if you don't want picture from it.
Maybe once for the set up. You could use s-video.
4. The remote sends signals to each changer individually. The remote lets you pick which changer you want to talk to by pressing master, sub 2 or 3 changer on the top of the remote. when you do this the blue light on the top center of the changer will light up to let you know which you are communicating with. Also on the back of the changer you will assign each changer as a master and sub 1 or 2.

Right, I retired the original dv-5900 remote long ago - using a HTM MX-800 universal remote instead, and had forgotten about the switch. I'll probably have to teach the MX-800 a few macros to select Master or Sub 1, but I think it will work out just fine. Thanks a lot for your help. I'll take the too-short control cable with me when I visit Radio Shack...

I am crossing my fingers that the new changer to be released will have SACD support with iLink/firewire connectivity and still be compatible with the Entre!!
That's an optimistic viewpoint. I personally fear that Kenwood may be getting out of the Entre/Changer business altogether, and that we're back to the days of the Pioneer/Sony changers being the only games in town.
Nick
NiteOwl 01-02-04, 08:16 PM I didn't have to teach my remote any macros and such. I think what happens is that at any one time only one changer is active. Only the active changer accepts IR commands. I use both the PowerTouch III and Entre remote.

Mkellyvich 01-02-04, 08:55 PM Turin2006,
With the Entre, you shouldn't need to teach your remote the Main/Sub1/Sub2 commands. The Entre handles all the switching and sorting of commands between the units. I did not have to teach my Marantz remote any new commands or macros after adding the second changer.
You would only need the Main/Sub1/Sub2 commands if you wanted to operate the changers independent of the Entre or when rooting around in the changer's setup menus.

That's terrific. I assume the Main / Sub 1 buttons become active only once a sub is actually daisy chained? I tried pushing Sub 1 tonight on my original remote with just the one changer I have so far, ant the blue light stayed on.
In any event, the fact that Entre automatically disables the IR reception of the unused changer(s) is a really cool feature. How do you turn them off/on, or do you leave your changers on all the time?

Correct you only need to add the buttons from the top of the remote. Main, Sub 1 ,2.

NightOwl, I was using DVDEdit to fill in dvd info that was missing. It was working fine, but now when I start the program or do a query, it says "Received Last Packet" at the bottom and hangs.... Any Ideas???
I'm getting the same error. I tried rebooting the Entre, but it didn't work. Media Manager works, so I know the problem isn't connectivity.
Any suggestions?

After intstalling v2.37 the problem has not re appeared as of yet !!!!
RichardSP 01-03-04, 12:43 PM I have v2.37. The previous version (2.32) worked beautifully, but I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling to no avail.
NiteOwl 01-03-04, 03:20 PM Richard,
Once you install DVDedit, you apply an upgrade by simply overwritting the old EXE file from the zip file. There is no need to uninstall... doing so will only remove the support files from your computer.
What I really recommend is that if a particular version is working for you. Leave that in the install directory. When you download an upgrade, unzip it to your desktop or another directory. This way you can test the new version without loosing your old version. The EXE file can be anywhere, as long as the installed support files are on your computer.
If you need 2.32 PM me your email address.

Peccavi 01-03-04, 11:14 PM O.k., I am new to all the problems/solutions in relation to the entre+dv5900m scenarios and I fell asleep other night trying to read page after page of this thread.....bear with me please....I have just purchased this combination as dead inventory from my company (no longer dealing kenwood sov.), and got a grat deal, and , if all goes well, will purchase enother dv5900.....both my units were displays ,neither sent in for upgrades...my entre took 2+ hours (on dial-up...I'm in the rural wilds) to go from version1.0.0.1 (or whatever ) to version 2.0.01 (or something like that) and is doing the gracenote/cddb/escient thing very reliably and have been ripping whole and partial albums to the harddrive with no problems...I have a b&k avr507 w/ the mx remote as well as a tsu3000 and will presumably have no problems getting the units into my remotes....My problem is that the 5900 refuses to read any type disc...keeps flipping them, then displays some "disc cannot be read" message...now my question's are that, given the age of the software in my dv5900m and the "mail-the-unit- in-w/$50-for-the-upgrade" option that my kenwood rep suggests, what should they be doing to that unit for me( in addition to repairing it), and will it be worth it when they get done (ie: what problems will it still have that they are unlikely to ever address)
...should I , for $300 buy another 5900 ? what problems does the entre have that have not been adressed, and what should/can I do to make sure I have upgraded both pieces as far as I can take them?.......
WHEW! DID I GET IT ALL OUT?........
tHANx for any and all help in advance...in theory , these pieces, in combination, should suit my needs perfectly.......
Sounder 01-03-04, 11:24 PM Well, after lurking here for about 1 1/2 years, I finally took the plunge. I got the DV5900 and the entre. I got it all hooked up, and started loading discs into the unit. But, I'm having problems with the network. I'm hoping someone can help.
KW lists Belkin F5D5050 USB wireless adapter as working. But, I could only find F5D6050, which should be an upgrade of the same unit. This one doesn't connect at all to my Linksys wireless router. Next, I tried a DLink DWL122. This seemed to get a link, and actually made a connection to the web and OpenGlobe one time. But, I can't get it to connect any more. I've tried rebooting with and without them connected.
Also, when I go to internet setup, if I put in "ethernet" for the primary connection, it gives an error message telling me to look at the KW web site for acceptable hardware. In case it matters, I do have upgraded software to the current standard, AFAIK.
I sure hope some of you incredibly knowledgeable folks can help!!
Thanks!
Steve
DerekFSU 01-04-04, 01:27 AM What version of firmware do you have on your Entre? If it's an early version, you'll have to connect via dialup in to get the software update that allows for usb adapters other than the netmate ones.

Steve To amplify on what Derek said, unless you are on version 2.0.0.8 of the software, you must connect via phone and upgrade before you can use any adapter other than NetGear. I know someone who bought a brand-new unit in November which still had the original software on it. I don't think that Kenwood ever upgraded their stock units to have anything other than the original software build.
Nick Satullo 01-04-04, 05:21 PM Hi Joe:
After having some success with 2.34, I nonetheless tried 2.37. Actually, 2.37 works fine until . . . I try to edit something. It says "preparing to upload coverart and/or xml files" and then hangs. What I like about it, however, is that it seems to work great in terms of isolating the two Entres (gives me the drop down box, just like Media Manager).
I would have been content to go back to 2.34, however, it now hangs too. Thankfully, the FTP program works again (there was likely a problem in my LAN), but I'd love to have it all in the same package. Are you still revising the apps?
Thanks,
Nick
P.S. Your email is bouncing things back again.
NiteOwl 01-04-04, 11:31 PM Nick,
Reboot the Entre. Whenever uploads do not start, it is most likely that the Entre is not ready for more uploads (it's queue is tied up). Rebooting will fix that issue. Any item stalled on the queue holds everything up. It can only queue a handfull of items.
Regarding the bounced emails, please email me at josesampo@yahoo.com. I don't know what gives with hotmail. All of my email is downloaded to Outlook. I even make sure that the trash is empty.
Also if you have a P4 with HyperThreading, I have good news! With Lars' help I found a bug when accessing the registry. Scott is the only other person with one of these new P4s. He gives it a thumbs up, so as soon as I do one more fix I will release it. This issue resolved two things... "Received Last Packet" stalls and runtime errors after accessing the coverart upload form.
Talk to you later.

Mathazar 01-05-04, 12:14 AM Can you only FTP into the Entre if an Axcess is on the network? I recall reading a message some time ago in this thread that the Entre FTP port only comes open when the Axcess is present. This seems to be the case as I can't connect FTP anonymously with CuteFTP, DOS FTP, or WSFTP. If it's possible to FTP into Entre without an Axcess on the net, could someone let me know how? I'm growing weary of Media Manager after only a few days with it (and transferring, or attempting to transfer, 9G of MP3s).
Thanx,
Kris

It would be alot easier if you burned the 9 gigs of files onto cdr's and then ripped them using the Entre itself...MEDIA MANAGER IS WORTHLESS IN MY OPINION...... DVDEdit has only been available for a few weeks, and was created by someone not even associated with Kenwood or OG and the program is far more reliable... (Thanks Night Owl)...

Danny is right. I'd also recommend that you sync your Media Manager with the Entre after each MP3 CD that you rip. It is monotonous but it's the only way I've gotten it to work.

You should also check out the Vision and the Vision Pro. Lots of info on them in the Scalers Forum.
and some discs, if you do a lookup and don't change a thing in the name that it previously found, it will not find it.
it almost seems like they type in key words or something for each title.

Try this if you're interested in seeing how stupid the Entre's OG lookup is: pick any disk with two or more words in the title that has been successfully found by the Entre. Simply amazing!
i wonder how much it would improve the picture from a 5900m? interesting device. it's a new product and it's already at $700. you can see that down the line, these things will just be part of the TV. It just makes sense.

My software version is 2.0.0.8, and the system tells me that's the latest available version of the software.
Since posting this, I've run into another problem. I put about 80 DVDs in the system, did lookups, and found about 60 of those, using a dial up network. Then, I added some DVD-Audio discs, and of course, none were found. Then, I added about 200 CDs. The first few read okay, then it said the disc was unreadable, and ended up having three CDs stuck in the transport. I cleaned them out, reset, and started again. Same deal, got three different ones stuck. So, I cleaned and reset, and watched while it was working. Turns out, on the fourth or fifth disc, it never started spinning. Then, it turned the disc over, started spinning, turned it over again and didn't spin. Then, it tried to get the next disc without returning the first one. Anyone else experience this sort of problem?
Steve
