View Full Version : Kenwood Sovereign System (Changer, Entre, and Receiver) Issues and Answers
Mkellyvich 12-24-08, 03:54 PM GreenGA,
If you don't want to wait you can get the 1/8" stereo cables at any Radio Shack (or your local big box store)...You could be up and running tonight!
Cheers,
Mike
salvador_dali 02-03-09, 11:13 AM This is sort of a double post but since I did not receive one reply I thought I would ask here.
I have a Kenwood DV 5700. It started a NO PLAY NO DISC error. Cleaned it using the Maxell Cleaner 20 times and a brush cleaner 3 times. Now it generates an error message all the time whereas before it did sometime play.
I am trying to get it repaired. The likely issue is the lens. I have a replacement lens but it has an extra ribbon hanging off one side so i don't think it is a match.
Has anyone repaired their 5700? Any ideas? Thanks
les_garten 02-26-09, 03:48 PM Hello,
I bought one of these back in like 2002. DV-5900M with the Entre controller. A job move caused me to not be at my house when the company packed up my household stuff.
Well I decided to see this gear that has set unused for all this time and found the Changer has discs in it, and I can't get the door to open to get them out. I see no latch on the door, and don't want to tear up the Changer. Anybody have a trick for this?
Thanx!
Les

It's not a big deal to take the screws out of the top and sides of the DV-5900M, and then you can access the innards of the changer. I'm betting that something is stuck which you can easily fix from the top/side cover being off, and then it will work fine.
It's still a great setup. It continued to be great through all of DVD, and now we await something like it in BD.
Thanks,
Nick

Hi,
Thanx. Very timely. I had just discovered that. Got the three hundred or so DVD's out of there!! It was a mess.
So here' what it does or doesn't do.
You turn it on and it just lights the display and says D001 T01 and the M Icon is lit Blue and the D.C. icon is lit. Doesn't move anything or try to index discs. I looked in the manual and there is a computer initialization/reset procedure and I went through it twice, no Love there.
So you turn it on and it lights up and that is it. None of the controls do anything. I hate to toss it because it is a Nice changer.

Does anyone have a copy of it. I tried the wayback machine, but no good there.
Thanx!
Really Need the help with my DV-5900m
.
les_garten 02-28-09, 10:07 AM PLEASE! If anyone knows where ohh where the Sovereign FAQ went, I would appreciate it!!

krichter1 02-28-09, 10:34 AM I can help you Les. If you PM me I'll email you the word document I have saved.
B&W700guy 03-07-09, 07:38 PM About 8 years ago I purchased a DV-5900M, and loved it till, it died about a year ago. This week I purchased a referb 5900 and an Entre. Seems the 5900 is working properly...even pulled out an old laptop with Netname sw, it went to the web and d-loaded the disc info for one of my CD's.
The Entre is a different mater. I have a Netmate CATC: USB to Ethernet device, that came with the unit. The Entre is loaded with fw rev 1.1.0.10, as I have read I may need 2.x for ethernet com.
I tried DYNAMIC IP, no go, then I went to my computer, found the network information, went to 50, just incase, at the end of the IP String.
I have been able to Ping the Netmate from my network. After this, it seemed to go into the first download screens and get info like computer radio information, but when it got to OpenGlobe... it flashed to finish. The odd thing was my router only had the LIGHT ON for DEVICE, but the LOWER LIGHT for SPEED was not LIT.
The problem is that I cannot get into Open Globe to update disc information "once I got a DSN ERROR MESSAGE when trying to update a CD." So, I am not sure if I really have done any updates?
I emailed Country Bumkin and tried to d-loaded the kenwood120.zip file, but it was not there. Found other helpful files though:)
I am waiting for a reply from CB on what I am doing wrong.
Anybody have any other ideas? Also, I never saw any registrations request
Thanks
James A. McGahee 03-08-09, 09:21 PM Is there anyone who uses the iPhone remote control applications for operating their Sovereign system?
How do you get the commands into the iPhone?
Is it a similiar process as with Harmony remotes?
Thanks for your help!!

Great News! Been stuffing my dvd play and entre with all my discs since last sunday. Never had to update firmware, Happy:) Best $350.00 investment I have ever made:D The iPhone interface is cool;)

I've had the changer/Entre setup for 6 years. I have really enjoyed it a lot and am having a really hard time dealing with the need to upgrade the matching receiver for the new audio codecs.
Tell me about the iPhone interface, how it works, what you need, where you got it, etc.
Thanks
Good to hear that some of you are still enjoying the Entre system. I was too until Sunday when I turned everything on and the Entre would not respond. I got the blinking red light and that was all. I tried to reboot by unplugging and holding down the on button with no results. I have left it unplugged over-night with no result. The red light blinks at a steady rate as soon as it is pluged in. The disk tray did open and close twice but not as a result of pushing the open button. Anyone have any ideas as to how to get it to turn on? My 5900 is working just fine, and I have no problem playing CDs. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Bver
Mkellyvich 03-17-09, 08:44 PM Bver,
Sounds like your hard drive may have gone (the drive tray opening on its own is probably the unit telling you it can't find an operating system on the disc). If you have the 120Gb upgrade CD you can replace the drive and use the CD to reload the operating system - you'll have to reload your media and re-lookup all your movies. One way to test this theory is to unplug the Entre, then plug it back in and listen for the HDD to spin up - if you don't hear it the drive has likely died.
I've replaced the drives in my Entres with 120Gb and 160Gb IDE drives with no problems (the 160Gb drive formats to 120Gb using the CD I have, but the drive was only $35 so I don't care about the wasted space). There was a FAQ linked from the AVS Entre Technical thread that gave instructions.
Hope this helps,
Mike
Mike,
Thanks for the info. I'm sure that is the problem I can hear a spin and a click sound like the read head is stuck. I checked my paperwork and found that I still have a few months left on my NSI warranty that I paid $80 buck for when I purchased the Entre from Vanns. To my complete surprise I talked to a very friendly and knowledgeble lady who processed my claim and sent it off to the repair company, DTR Technologies in Denver. I called them, and they said to send it in for a diagnosis. They will either repair it or give me back the $300 purchase price. Whatever the outcome, I am ready to upgrade to a whole new system such as the Escient. I went through pure hell with the Entre for almost a year after I bought it trying to get it to connect with Open Globe and do what it is supposed to do with my CD collection. My two son's-in-law who are very tech savvy had no luck even with the little help we got from Kenwood. One day I was on the phone to Escient to get some information on Open Globe, and I was talking with a terrific tech by the name of Mike who said he might be able to help me with the proper codes to get the Entre working. In less than 10 minutes I was in business, and everything worked fine from then on. I wrote down the settings at that time, but somehow Murphy seems to have hidden them on me. I do not want to go through that setup nightmare again. Mike, is there any chance that you were that Mike? If I get the Entre back in working order, I will sell it and my 5900 for a few bucks and go to something that does not require a degree from MIT to operate. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. My thanks to all of you for your forum participation.
By the way James, the Axcess you bought from me is still under warranty until 10/21/09 just in case you have any problems with it.
Thanks and best regards,
Bver
Mkellyvich 03-23-09, 08:59 PM Bver,
Nope, I'm not the Mike from Escient. I switched from the Entre to the Escient DVDM-100 for DVD control two years ago and have been very happy with it - simpler startup and easier editing of movie information. The DVDM-100 works well with the Kenwood changers. I still use the Entre for music and internet radio (and to serve music to a couple of Axcess portals). I haven't played with the new Escient Vision systems at all.
You might be able to find the key commands to reset the Entre in this or the Sovereign tech discussion thread (I think you enter 5555 while in the Entre's setup menu).
Good luck with the repair - leave a post telling how it works out.
Cheers,
Mike

Well, ran into some trouble last week. My Entre would only read up to 250 discs. I messed around with the unit and was able to force a download to 2.x firmware. Wow...much faster lookup on OpenGlobe! Can’t believe that I purchased a 400 disc DVD changer and an Entre for $350.00! Hopefully this will last me three years or so. Can’t wait till we see the Bluray DVD changers, with what they are doing with Bluray you will have enough memory to do all of your BD live and the stuff that this entre does all in one. Gotta love technology

Who is working on the Blu Ray DVD changers?
What have you heard about it?
The only one I am aware of is the rather expensive unit by
Sony that I believe is already for sale, although I haven't seen it anywhere in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area.
Hey Bver, I have had it up and running. Then I started having problems. Someone here helped me get it up and going again but it has since stopped working and I haven't taken time to work with it again. I don't think there is anything wrong with it, just my lack of technical knowledge and patience. Glad to know about the warranty. I will now make an effort to get it up and running before it expires.
Thanks-
B&W700guy 03-24-09, 12:03 AM Sony will have the new 400 disc Bluray changer out this year. I am sure it will be around 2k. But as I remember the 5900 was $1495.00. Give it a few years and I am sure you will be able to buy it for under 1k ;)

While I hope you're right, this is more information than I have been able to get from any Sony source. We've seen dummied up versions of the "soon-to-be-released" BD changer at the last two CEDIAs, and the last CES. But no hard information exists on whether such a unit will actually be released, or even its features.
If someone has better information, I'd love to learn it.
Thanks,
Nick

The only press release I have ever read about a release for the 400 changer is the last CEDIA....they may have showed a version before the last show but I am sure they didn't press release a date;)
I spoke with of my freinds who ownes a Hi-fi shop and told me that the Sony rep stated that it will be out this year... I am not a sony fan...but it is, what it is. I hope another company comes out with a changer, or Bluray downloads. Then we won't need these fradgile changers.

dcpmark 04-16-09, 09:45 PM Ok, Kenwood fans! I've been using my VR-5900 and DV-5900M for many years, but I'm ready to get something that can handle HDMI video switching. Anyone care to make some recommendations? The cheaper the better, but I'm not willing to sacrifice my current performance levels.
TIA
Mkellyvich 04-24-09, 06:41 PM Seems like folks are slowly letting their Sovereign gear go. I've put all my DVDs on a server, but still have the changers (with an Escient controller) hooked up to the system for Zone 2 playback. I still use the Entre and Axcess portals for music as well, although the PCs are slowly taking that over too.
I have three working changers and three parts changers that I'll probably put on the market in the near future.
Cheers,
Mike

The only problem is that you can get a new/referbed, Entre/5900 combo for $300.00. If you look, you can still find them;) There is no resale value for used product:(
Mkellyvich 04-26-09, 09:47 AM Yep, selling your previously-prized electronics is a great way to get perspective on this hobby. I haven't decided what to do with the Sovereign gear yet - we will likely have to move again next summer and I'll probably hang onto it until I see whether it makes sense to set the system up somewhere in the new house. I still like the functionality of the Entre/VR-5900/DV-5900 setup, and the sound/picture quality is still great as well.
At some point the pile of electronic boxes starts getting bigger/heavier than the rest of your household goods and you have to downsize...
Cheers,
Mike
James A. McGahee 05-11-09, 11:07 PM According to page 48 of the the Entre User's Guide it says to check the Kenwood USA Web site for an updated list of supported MP3 players. Anyone remember ever seeing anything other that the listed players in the guide: Compaq PA-1, Compaq PA-2, and Rio 600?
Anyone know if there are others out theret that will work? Iphone/Touch?
Thanks-

Mkellyvich 11-11-09, 10:23 PM It is a sad day. Today I unpacked all the discs from my three DV-5900s and put them in the garage for future sale. All the DVDs have been ripped to a VMC server. The Sovereign gear served well for the last 7.5 years, but it is time to move on...
I still use the Entre and a couple of Axcess portals, and the VR-5900 is doing two-channel duty in an audio-only system in a spare room.
Anyone else still using their Sovereign gear?
Mike
krichter1 11-12-09, 09:16 AM Yeah, I still have my two systems (6 changers & two Entres), although I rarely use them any more due to exclusive HD purchases now. I'm considering the new Sony 400 disc Blu changer but so far they cannot be slaved nor any announced Escient support.
How did you find the time to rip 1200 discs to a media server? I'm not familiar with VMC though. Sounds really expensive for that many drives!
Good luck buddy!
Kevin

That does seem to be where we are heading, but I think I will continue to use what I have for a bit longer. :)
Now if I could only find a DV-5900 video processing board that has the upgrade... my #2 unit's video board just died. :(
DannyFresh 11-12-09, 02:12 PM My unit is still operational, although I really don't use it much any more.
I went the HTPC route about a year ago and that serves me pretty well.
I have fond memories of posting on this thread. Asking questions an receiving far more information than I actually bargined for. Hacking that Entre was sure a lot of fun. Mike, seeing your post has brought many thoughts back from the past. The sovereign system was way ahead of it's time. I enjoyed the time I spent with it. Take care all, and good luck. Now back to hacking th iPhone!
Mkellyvich 11-12-09, 09:07 PM Kevin,
It took about a month running 3 computers and sticking in a disc every time I walked by to rip all the movies. Surprisingly, the server cost less than $2k to build (has 8TB of storage, 6 of which is dedicated to DVDs on 4 1.5TB drives). I skipped all the fancy UNRAID and RAID solutions - just bought a motherboard with 6 SATA connections and use the disks as individual volumes. I bought 4 external 1.5TB drives and backed up the DVD drives one-for-one.
The Vista Media Center DVD library has worked reliably for the last 9 months after a little initial fiddling to keep HDMI audio from dropping out when the machine is idle.
Like Danny said, the Sovereign system was well ahead of its time - the integration of the receiver, entre, changers and portals has yet to be matched by anything else I've seen without a specialized control system and hours of programming. Towards the end I bought a couple of parts changers to fix bad video boards, but we had many thousands of hours of entertainment from the system between 2002 and 2009. Many thanks to all of you who figured out how to FTP to the unit, update the metadata, upgrade the hard drives, etc.
Cheers,
Mike
B&W700guy 11-13-09, 09:44 PM I am very happy with my Entre and a DV-5900. It is filled with cd'S, DVD Movies and alot of DVD music video that will probibly never come out in Bluray. I will soon buy the sony bluray 400 disc play for my Blurays.
Nick Satullo 11-13-09, 10:36 PM Still a few pieces in operation, but mostly relegated to the sideline. Nonetheless, the whole Sovereign concept has formed the basis for my current theater system.
And, too, this thread had some lively moments. I'm pleased to have been a part of it.
Good luck, all.
Thanks,
Nick

Still using my 5900 receiver, changer, Axcess, and Entre. Thinking about upgrading starting with the receiver. With all the changes-HDMI 1.4 soon, the new audio codecs, etc. it's time. Not sure I'll be able to find a receiver in the same price range that sounds as good.
Anybody got any preferences/ideas for a replacement?
Still considering Denon, Onkyo, maybe Integra separates. I'll haven't posted much lately but will continue until the very end. Thanks to everyone who helped over the last several years!
Still have and use my Entre and DV-5900. My next purchase will be the Sony bluray changer and the Sony VW-85 projector.

Tell me what you know about the Sony VW-85 projector-price, throw, lumen, etcs.
Are you going with pretty much all Sony componets?
Only know what I have read in the projector forum about the VW-85. As far as having all Sony components the answer is no. I have a Panasonic Bluray player and Onkyo receiver.
efreitag 12-21-09, 03:00 PM I've tried searching through all the forums, but have not found an answer, so I'm hoping somebody here can help me out...
I have a VR-5900 receiver, but the sound doesn't always work on it.
It seems to either work or not work.
The problem usually occurs when turning the unit on, sometimes it outputs sounds, sometimes it does not. (everything else functions correctly regardless)
Sometimes switching inputs will get the sound going, sometimes not.
Or the other way around, I've had the sound working, then switch inputs and the sound stops working.
Anybody have any experience with this?
I love the sound the receiver puts out, so I'm hoping I can fix it.
I do have a VR-5090 as well that still works just fine.
I use it in the computer room, but I'd be willing to sacrifice it if there's a part I could take from it to fix the VR-5900
I would also be happy if there was a way for me to turn the VR-5900 into a straight amp. (that's how I'm planning on using it anyway) I would control all A/V switching with a new receiver with HDMI etc... and just run the pre-outs to the VR-5900
Any ideas?
Thank You

YES! I sometimes have this same exact problem! The strange thing is that sometimes it works 100% fine for months at a time and then the problem comes back.
My temporary solution. If you're using a digital input, switch the digital output from cable box or DVD player to PCM and then choose any Dolby Surround mode. This also works if you're using an analog input or just playing the tuner. Your sound will come back, but maybe not exactly the way you want it. Then eventually (maybe hours, days, weeks?) later if you switch it back to normal it works again. Also try switching on/off the THX setting. This will sometimes make the sound come back again.
I once contacted Kenwood tech support about this problem and they said I'd need to take it in for repair. Well, I haven't done it yet. Luckily the problem has not happened to me in a few months. Keeping my fingers crossed.
If you get it figured out, let me know!

I will give this a try to see if I can get any type of consistency out of it.
If this works, I can live with analog inputs and a Dolby Surround mode for now...
I've had the problem for probably 1 1/2 years, but just recently it's been getting much worse (to the point where some days I can't get it to work at all no matter how many times I cycle through inputs)
I'll let you know if I figure anything else out
scott_bernstein 12-21-09, 04:08 PM Thanks for the response.
I will give this a try to see if I can get any type of consistency out of it.

Yes, I see the same symptoms -- when it first started happening I could cycle through the inputs and eventually get it to work. Then I found this solution which always works for me! Analog inputs/Dolby surround is far inferior to proper Dolby Digital, but at least you still have your amp.
The odd thing is that this problem will happen for days (or weeks) and then go away for months!
I wouldn't mind taking it to be repaired but for 2 things -- I have no way to power my speakers w/o it (OK could live with this for a short while), and it SO darn heavy!!!

Of course now that I'm trying to test this out it's working fine...
James A. McGahee 12-21-09, 11:59 PM I've tried searching through all the forums, but have not found an answer, so I'm hoping somebody here can help me out...
Any ideas?
Thank You
I also loose audio only at times from my 5900 receiver if using Sat. or DVD/CD/etc. I never loose audio with BR. When it drops the audio I just power the 5900 receiver off and on and it comes back. Like you it goes for months working just fine then will act up for a few days before behaving for another few months. I did check in to the problem and from what I remember it was a switching/processor problem that is inherent and can't be fixed. Some one in this thread warned that once this problem starts it only gets worse and worse until you have no sound. I haven't found this to be true. I have also been told (when I got the receiver) that you should connect all the audio inputs for each device. In other words for your Sat. for example connect the RCA, Optical, and Coax and the receiver will choose the correct/best connection. I was later told, after the problem manifested itself, to only use one-either optical, coax, or RCA. I've made so many changes over the years I'm not sure what I have connected currently.
I too am interested in keeping and using my 5900 for its great sound. I would also like to know what I can do to integrate my 5900 receiver as an amp only (as well as my MX5000 rear L & R speaker amp.) into my 7.1 system in order to take advantage of HDMI and the new audio codecs. Any help anyone?

I bought a broken DV-5900m changer from ebay 1.5 years ago. I was able to clean the lens with a disc cleaner... and it worked.
I then packed the player away for 1 year. Now it has returned. I am having a couple of issues however. Supposidly there was a faq, but I cant find it?
1) the Video is off center. It is about .5 inches to the left. Is there a way to adjust this?
2) The Bass output on the preouts is VERY low.
3) This unit is being upconverted and sent to my TV via HDMI. I am using a Harman Kardon AVR-347, which has 720p upconversion via a Faroudja chip. Should I just turn off the upconversion on my DV-5900m?
Hello,...
i own the kenwood dvj-6050 dvd changer and i used to use the kenwood netnamer software. i had to reinstall my system and i don't have a copy that software anymore. i read in that some you have the installation files. it would be great if you can send me these files please, because i can't find them on the internet. Seems to be too old...
My E-Mail is lepel [at] simbo.de
Would be great to hear from you.
Kind regards,

Hmm, it looks like the problem is my AVR.
And the Sub Bass is good? Not sure what happened there.
efreitag 12-29-09, 12:46 PM Of course now that I'm trying to test this out it's working fine...
OK, so my VR-5900 stopped working, and unfortunately none of the above suggestions of swithing to analog, pro-logic, toggling THX etc.. seem to work.
So right now it either works some days, or doesn't with no consistency...
Does anybody know what board would most likely be causing the problem, and if it's the same board in the VR-5090?
Or is there a way to rewire the VR-5900 to bypass all circuitry so I could use it solely as an amp. I'm just looking for 5 RCA inputs to wire up directly (I'd even be happy if I could get 2 channels working)

Oh -- one more thing I might have forgotten to mention about my "pro logic" solution -- I have to switch the source material to output PCM to get it to work when it's in the state you've got it. So instead of Dolby Digital, I set my cable box (or DVD player) to PCM output and then the Dolby Surround listen mode trick works.
Give it one more try.
If you decide to get it repaired (which would probably be a good idea for you at this point), please report back about what the diagnosis was, what exactly they repaired, and how much it cost! The easiest way to manifest the problem (if you bring to repair) is to set it to TUNER and show that there's no sound. This way they can't blame any source input.....

I have attached the FAQ doc from years past and the video centering feature is within the Entre's set-up menu. I have generally found the progressive mode best on the 5900 output but it all depends on which chip is better. You'll have to watch a movie with it on, then turn off the changer, switch to 480i, power-up and use your HK processor to see which mode looks best.
Happy Holidays to all my Sovereign brethren!
Kevin (THXMAN)
Hmmm, I dont have an Entre. I just have the Mega changer.
I have tested out the scalars, yeah the one in the Harman Kardon is better. Its a 720 Faroudja upscaler. Unfortunately, there is something wrong with my HK, where the video is off center and shakes.
Fortunately I ahve a warranty through best buy.
Has anyone built a better antenna for the rf remote input on their receiver? I just moved my equipment into a closet and am not getting good signal to/from the receiver/powertouch remote... To create my own antenna ideally I will need the impedance of the input and the freq it operates at. Anyone have this info? I can't seem to find it online.

I haven't but there are some connections in the back under the cover. Other than the electrical I'm not sure what they are for.
I have had a problem with it loosing all my input information whenever it becomes disconnected from the wall and the batteries are dead. Is that normal?

Nike, or anyone else, I'm having a problem with the plastic structures hovering just above the disks in the 5900 changer. I need to increase the distance between the plastic and the top of the disks. The disks scrape the top and eventually cause disks to get out of alignment. Any experience with this problem? I think the plastic may have warped downward a little with age/time/heat.

Noticed you said "have it" not "wearing it"!
Yup, I've kept my notifications on also just for fun!
The Kenwood amp and processor are still cranking away in the basement...
But the "beloved" 5900 was replaced by a Sony years ago and still working with an Escient piece.
As far as the plastic above the discs, mine always squeaked, but never caused the discs to go out of alignment.

OK, so I finally got around to trying this.
I made sure it was receiving a PCM signal (via optical cable) but this didn't work.
I tried all 7 inputs
Thanks for the suggestion though, it was worth a shot
It appears the receiver is not recognizing there is an incoming signal at all.
does anybody have any electrical schematics?
James A. McGahee 02-01-10, 11:17 PM Is there there anyone still around that knows how to connect my Entre wirelessly (or use my internal WiFi) with my computer?
I would love to be able to see my album covers, select, and play CDs and DVDs over my computer and/or with the new iRule application (not approved yet) with an iPhone or iTouch.
Instructions appreciated but keep it REAL simple as I am not a tech. person. Most of this is all a mystery to me.
Thanks for your help-

I had the same problem. the only difference was that my unit just stopped playing sound while I was using it.
It is fixed now. I brought it to Kenwood Service and they replaced the IC32. I asked what the cause of the failure was and the said "time". The IC32 when it gets old will just stop working. The repair cost me $180.00. I bet you wonder why not just upgrade the receiver to one with HDMI, WiFi, etc. Well my PS3 is my network device and the XBR HDMI switch. Also when you consider the initial sale price of the VR-5900 it's a no brainer.
The IC32 had a cost of $50.00 on my repair receipt so if you have the skills to install a component like this you could order the part and save yourself some money.
I hope this helps.
DannyFresh 06-27-10, 12:18 AM I too have had the same problem intermittently. A Pioneer Elite VSX23TXH has solved my issues. At one point in time I would by nothing other than the Kenwood brand. They were always on the cutting edge, and manufactured some awesome "Flagship" receivers, that being said there is no excuse for a $2000+ unit failing after only a few years. I also owned and still have in my possession a VR-5900 Sovereign unit. Like everyone my unit had digital input issues. I own older Kenwood units I purchased a VR-2090 in 98'/99'. The unit still functions perfectly. Somewhere along the line Kenwood decided the car stereo world was a much better business to venture into. I own a Kenwood/Garmin navigation unit I installed in a 2007 Ford Explorer and I might say it is an awesome piece on equipment, but Kenwood leaving home audio was a good thing as I see it. It's just a shame they didn't get out before I shelled out $2000+ dollars for a receiver that I still have that no longer functions.

Why did you repair a receiver that is antiquated for $180.00? Be ready soon for another board level component to go down, another $180.00 or more?. If you took the cash for the repair and another $200.00 to $300.00 you could have purchased a much nicer, referb or used receiver that has better processing, better features and so on. To me, the Sovereign, Flagship Receiver fell by the wayside very quickly compared to other Flagship Receivers (especialy with the digital problem.) The only thing nice about them was the interface between it and the Entre and 5900. For me, a nice remote took care of that, oh and a much nicer, feature rich, Prepro from another manufacturer;) But I still love my Entre and DV-5900 :) I had been using a DV5900 with the computer sw for years. Then a few years ago, Kenwood dumped all their stock of Entre's and DV5900'S cheep. I purchased the Entre and DVD Changer for to $350.00 for the set with usb/ethernet hub. Plugged it in, filled it up and have been happy ever since.
Next will be the Sony, BR Changer.:)

I think $180 is a small price to pay for the repair. The only receiver that I think could replace the VR-5900 is the Denon AVR-5308CI . The Denon cost $5500 new. The repair cost of $180 is a great savings in my opinion
What do you get in a new receiver? Network capability? I get that through my PS3. HDMI connectivity? I connect my HDMI into my TV. Is the audio and video processor going to be any better with a new receiver? I don’t think $5500 better. The remote control won’t be better unless I buy that separately. What feature or function of a current new receiver is worth $5500?
I’ve had my VR-5900 for 8 years and this is its first failure. I hope this repair survives another 8 years and then maybe I will consider replacing it. I also hope that at that time there is some kind of breakthrough with receivers that will make it worth it.
The Sony BD changer looks great. I like all my media mobile so this kind of hard disc unit is a waste.
B&W700guy 06-27-10, 05:04 PM How can you say that with its digital problem. Every mid-range receiver, sold today, by every manufacturer is better then the VR-5900. It was not very impressive 8 years ago ether ($2k) Also, I am not that impressed with the PS3, well for gamming I guess:) On the remote, I have a 15 yr old pronto remote that does everything I want it to do with one push of the button. Oh, and I purchased it for less then $300.00.
Question, if you think Kenwood nailed it, why are they out of the HT business  Again, lets see when the next board level component fails… better keep another $200.00 in the bank:(

Oh you are just a Kenwood hater.:(
Tell me what receiver I could buy for $180 that is better than the VR-5900. Be specific so I can compare the specs.
You think that Kenwood being out of the HT business is due to their equipment failures. I disagree because I see their issue as being ahead of the curve and not marketing their product effectively. The Entre was revolutionary, how many years before the iPod? The Escient systems every other like it is based on the Kenwood Entre.
The pronto remote you mentioned is a great device. But wasn’t Kenwood the company who first included touch screen universal remote with their KM-C1 unit about 20 years ago?
Kenwood was on the cutting edge of HT technology but failed to know what they had and what the hell to do with it. There failure is reminiscent of Mazda, the inventor of 4 wheel steering. The credit went to Honda, who knew how to market it. The biggest loser company award has to go to Xerox, who in an effort to create a paperless office created the technology behind Windows and Apple. The technology that is the foundation of both Microsoft and Apple were developed in Xerox labs. But what would a printing executive know to do with the most cutting edge computer technology ever invented at that time. Pakaging, marketing, partnerships and timing play a huge role in a company’s successful launch and roll out of a product line. Don’t knock Kenwood’s entire HT line for not being perfect with everything.
The clock is ticking. We will see how long the repair last. So only time will tell who is right.;)

LOL... How can I be a Kenwood hater and say I really like the Entre and the 400 disc changer? My issue is with their POS receivers. Also, I don't think the Xerox Park analogy fly’s ether. I think their receiver line torpedoed everything. 8 years ago their flagship receiver was mediocre compared to others. They never came up with any improvements at that time:( Again, a mid-line receiver will be a BIG improvement. The Auto EQ would be worth it alone.
DannyFresh 07-30-10, 05:38 AM If my memory serves me correctly, the Entre was based off of Escient's design, not the other way around.

The only issue I have is the scarce amount of media server software. You are pretty much stuck with media center, it seems to be the only stable option available.

rchrdshelton 12-27-10, 09:57 AM Good morning! I finally registered to the forum....I have searched it numerous times....but now I was wondering if I could get some specific help....I bought a Kenwood entre with the 400 disc changer off of ebay...both units appear to function, but the entre will not access my Comcast internet connection. The entre came with the adapter....it's a small gray unit with a band of red on one end. I've got the tcp/ip set to ethernet and every time I test connection, it appears to find the internet connection and give it a little yellow check, but the next item on that list is yellow to begin with and then turns to a red x. Sometimes at the bottom it says connected and other times it says it can't find the DNS. I was on the phone with Comcast for an hour and a half last night and the poor guy did everything he could, to no avail. I've unplugged my router and moden while the entre was hooked to them and plugged them back in and that didn't help. The guy I bought it from, who has been very nice and helpful said that it was a bit glitchy, but it did work. Oh, I've got the internet access set to dynamic also. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Rick
Reading about your problem reminds me of my first attempt to communicate to the Entre on my network. It took me a good week to figure out what the problem was. You don't provide a lot of insight into your network configuration, so I'm going to make a couple of assumptions and you'll have to give guidance where I'm off.
As you know, the Entre was built to support HPNA, a standard for connecting over a home phone network. Supporting Ethernet seems to have been an afterthought, so it was a couple Entre OS releases before USB adapters were supported, and then only a handful at that. From the description of your USB to Ethernet adapter, you probably have the Linksys USB100TX adapter, which was one of the first supported on the Entre. If so, your problem is most likely due to limitation I found with the USB100TX's ability to work in a mixed 10Base-T/100Base-T (or 1000Base-T) network.
There are a couple of work-arounds that I've tested.
If you can find a true 10Base-T only hub or switch, you can daisy-chain it off your 100Base-T/1000Base-T switch/router and plug the USB100TX into the 10Base-T hub/switch.
You could also look for an HPNA to Ethernet bridge (most popular at the time was the Netgear PE102), where the Entre would connect through its built-in phone jack, and the HPNA bridge would connect into your network switch/router.
Last, you could find a suitable replacement for the USB100TX, but there were only a handful ever supported and my guess is that none are still in production. I use a Belkin F5D5050 USB-Ethernet adapter and it works fine plugged into my gigabit network switch.
If none of these are practical - in other words, you can't find this older equipment, you might try building a 10Base-T only cable and see if this can make the USB100TX work. In theory it should, but I haven't tested it. Look here for guidance http://www.maznets.com/tech/10base-t.htm.
One more thing - At least one release of the Entre's OS had a bug that prevented Dynamic from working, but would work if you selected Static and hardcoded the IP addresses for the Entre, Gateway, and DNS addresses.
Good luck.
Dave
rchrdshelton 12-27-10, 01:10 PM Thanks so much for the response. I Comcast DSL, a Motorola modem and a Dynex router. The software version on the entre now is KMC-2.0.0.16. I do have the Lynksys USB 100TX adapter. It appears that when it's connected to the entre, at least one of the 2 lights are supposed to light up and neither do. So, at this point I can't tell if there's something wrong with the adapter or the USB connection on the back of the entre. I just googled this adapter and there are some available....I just tried loading in the IP address and gateway address from the numbers I got from the user information screen and changed it to static, but still nothing. I'm not too far from a Microcenter and I'm sure they would have what you mentioned previously....it sounds like the HPNA to ethernet bridge would be the easiest to find and then it wouldn't matter if this Linksys I have works or not....I really appreciate you taking the time to help....I've been futzing with this since 7 last night!!
Rick
I found the Belkin F5D5050 still available on Amazon for under $20, and eBay has a couple used ones for sale. That would be my first choice. The HPNA bridge works, but it's going to be hard to find and probably > $50 to procure. You will probably have difficulty finding a new 10Base-T only hub as well. All current switches will support 10Base-T through auto-detection of a 10Base-T signal, but the USB100TX doesn't appear to interface with the switch properly.
So let me see if I can be a little clearer on this. The Linksys USB100TX works fine on a dedicated 10Base-T hub (not one that supports 100Base-T and higher), or by using a cable that can only support a 10Base-T signal to your current router. You'll have to build this cable using as reference the link I provided earlier, or you can take an extra Ethernet cable and cut the 4,5,7, & 8 pins from one of the connectors.
I'm pretty sure dynamic was fixed in 2.0.0.16.
Dave
rchrdshelton 12-27-10, 01:54 PM I just searched Microcenter and they have the Belkin for 30 bucks....so you think that just plugging that into my Dynex rounter will do the trick?
In short, yes. I have both the Linksys and the Belkin adapters. The Belkin has never had a problem with any switch/router it has been plugged into.
Dave
rchrdshelton 12-27-10, 02:35 PM Thanks buddy! I'm on my way! I'll let you know if it worked!!

That's odd Dave. I was never able to get dynamic working even after the x16 "upgrade".
Don't forget that a reboot is needed (pushing down the power button for 3-4 seconds), whenever you connect or disconnect the adapters. The fact he mentioned there was no lights means either the unit is indeed defective or a reboot is required to re-interrogate the connected hardware. Many in the past have gotten bitten by this; assuming they could simply connect the adapter and it would work [wrong].
Did you get your package yesterday? :D
Kevin
I'm still running 2.0.0.08, so if you say 20.0.0.16 still has broken dynamic setting, then I believe you. But for some reason I thought that it was released for that reason.
As to his defective USB100TX, weren't they all a little defective? The amount of trouble I had with that thing was the catalyst for purchasing the Belkin in the first place. Rick stated earlier that he confirmed his adapter had worked for the previous owner, so I accepted it as working. You're still using one the last time I remember having this conversation with you. If you even need a replacement, I have one in the closet.
No mail out here in the sticks on Sundays, but it might be here. I haven't made the 1/10 of a mile walk to the mailbox yet.

rchrdshelton 12-28-10, 01:47 PM Got the Belkin and rebooted the system and did get much further in the list that with the TX100, but still no internet connection. Is there any way that the entre is trying to go to a website that is not longer working? I'm rebooting it again right now.....I bought my daughter an Escient DVDM-100 for Christmas and just went ahead and hooked the Kenwood changer up to it. It, of course, fired right up!!
rchrdshelton 12-28-10, 01:52 PM Just tried primary tcp/ip and got the red x at locate DHCP server. Went to secondary tcp/ip and first got the yellow check at test web connection to openglobe and after a while got the red x at that line too....status: web connecton failed.
krichter1 12-28-10, 01:53 PM Is the Belkin light on solid after reboot? Have you gone in and entered your static IP data (making SURE it's a unique IP on your system of course), then use the option to test? It's always been flaky at best but I've done two or three tests after failure then it worked magically (and once it does its solid).
rchrdshelton 12-28-10, 01:58 PM Whenever I test the connection, the Belkin light goes out and then comes on slow and kind of pulses from yellow to red. Right now it's on solid yellow. I don't know what my IP address is. I called Comcast and they were no help. Plus, I need IP address, gateway something or other and DNS. Plus server name.....do you know where I can find these numbers?
krichter1 12-28-10, 02:17 PM Heres a couple quick shots. You could also try as shown to use your gateway address as the first IP which works for me:
Kevin says that 20.0.0.16 did not fix the problem with dynamic IP assignments. You'll have to select static and plug in an IP address, Gateway address (your router address), and DNS addresses. For your Entre IP address try to use an address within your router's address range, but outside your DHCP server's management range. Or if too much to deal with, simply pick an address high enough that your DHCP server will probably never assign.
Example: If your router address is 192.168.1.1, it's address range is 192.168.1.1 through 192.168.1.254. The Entre's IP address can be any number within this range that is not already being used on your network. Choose an address for the Entre around 192.168.1.190. Look at your computer's TCPIP network settings for guidance or look through your router's setup and status menus.
For the DNS address, you can probably use the IP address for the router, but to be on the safe side use the DNS addresses your router was assigned from your ISP.
Example: For my Entre the first DNS address is 192.168.1.1 which is my router address. The second DNS address is 24.217.0.5, which is an address assigned by my ISP displayed on the router's status screen.
Use 255.255.255.0 for the Subnet Mask
The DHCP Client ID can be anything you want or left blank.
Hmmm. I remember I had to change the server name to something different than the default. On my Entre the server name is PROD.
From an email Kevin sent many years ago:
Symptom: The Entre will not download DVD titles and cover art.
Solution: The Entre needs to be redirected to the "PROD" server.
Note: The Entre will still be able to download CD titles and cover art.
To verify whether or not the Entre needs to be redirected to the PROD
server:
Use the Entre remote control select: Set Up>Utilities>System Information
In the System Information screen find the heading "Server:" and verify that
PROD is present in the field.
Note: If PROD appears in the Server field, the problem is not related to the
Entre being directed to the wrong Server.
If PROD does not appear in the Server field:
(Using the remote control)
-Press the Set up button on the remote control to enter the "Setup Menu"
-Input 5555 to enter the "Advanced Utilities Menu"
-Select: "force re-registration (restarts unit)"
-Wait approximately 2-3 minutes for the Entre to power on -Input 64000 -Wait
approximately 5-6 minutes for the Entre to power on -Proceed through the
Quick Setup Screens.
Note: Re-registering the Entre is required
Once registration is complete, verify whether or not the Entre has been
redirected to the PROD server: Use the Entre remote control select: Set
Up>Utilities>System Information.
In the System Information screen find the heading "Server:" and verify that
PROD is present in the field

By the way, my Belkin shows a solid yellow when connected to the network. The light flashes when network traffic is detected.

rchrdshelton 12-28-10, 05:56 PM Hey Keven and Dave! Thank you both so much for helping me....this has proven to be frustrating to say the least! I reset the machine with the 5555. That was pretty cool! I will try to include a photo of my screen. In the info screen, server is blank.
krichter1 12-28-10, 07:13 PM By the way, my Belkin shows a solid yellow when connected to the network. The light flashes when network traffic is detected.

When the light turns red it indicates a network failure or collision.

We'll need to see a picture of you IP settings.
To set yours correctly you'll need to open a DOS window and type 'ipconfig /all' and fill in the appropriate addresses you see that match the boxes on your Entre. Hit 'Save' then reboot your Entre by holding down the power button for 3-5 seconds. Once back in test your connection like I showed you in the screenshot.

Not seeing 'PROD' after your 5555 reset doesn't sound good.
Maybe he wouldn't see PROD until the network is properly configured? Rick, are you talking about server name off the Setup/Utilities/System Information screen?
Dave
rchrdshelton 12-28-10, 10:34 PM I finally got it! I'll attach a photo....I heard some internet radio stations, but any time it wants to go to open globe....well....it doesn't like that....I went into the openglobe site using the button and on one page a url http error came up. openglobe.net doesn't open on the internet....
rchrdshelton 12-28-10, 10:39 PM Yes, off the system information screen.....here's a pic
Now that the network is properly configured, I would try forcing registration again. I don't think the process has completed. You're not only missing the server name, but the customer number as well. That tells me registration didn't complete.
Dave
krichter1 12-28-10, 10:59 PM I think you are correct Dave. How could he have completed reg. without a correct network (duh!).
rchrdshelton 12-28-10, 11:03 PM How long does the authentication take? It's been stuck on this screen for abut 10 minutes....
I haven't registered my Entre since 2004. I don't remember how long it took. I'd give it at least 20 minutes before going back and trying the procedure I outlined above (latter of post #6848). Be sure the network is functioning before you start registration.

Mathazar 12-29-10, 01:23 AM I might still have the manual In PDF format I'll look tonight when I get home. I can't beleive these units are still in use. After my VR5900 crapped out and numerous repairs to those terribly designed changers I went the server route via hdmi. Hard drives are dirt cheap now days. The only issue I have is the scarce amount of media server software. You are pretty much stuck with media center, it seems to be the only stable option available.
My three daisy-chained 5900M changers are still going strong after 9 years, but my Entre died in 2006 (I replaced it with an Escient Fireball and have been pretty happy with that product). I'm starting to watch more HD stored content, tho, and with the cost-per-GB hard drive space at an all-time low I set up a thin HTPC client on my AV rack that streams my digitally stored HD movies and HD TV shows from a 12TB archive server in another room. The HTPC uses XBMC as a front end to manage the digital content (http://xbmc.org). It'll run on top of Windows (XP or 7), Linux, or MacOS. Free and Open Source, incredibly configurable and customizable, and stable as all get-out. It'll take years for my 1000+ DVD collection to migrate from my Sovereign setup to the HTPC, but it's an inevitable migration.
I actually have four 5900Ms....I keep a spare on hand to swap out when one in the AV rack develops a problem and needs to be repaired (at least one needs to be repaired every 12-18 months). They still see weekly usage by the family, so I'm apt to keep up with the repairs for a while longer. A couple years ago I found a local guy who's shop is pretty adept at fixing the 5900 mechanicals - that shaved $120+ from the usual repair bill right off the bat that used to cover both-ways shipping to and from Kenwood in CA. :)
Kris
rchrdshelton 12-29-10, 01:38 PM Success! I tried it again this morning.....I did the 5555 thing and restarted the registration and this time it was able to get into openglobe and completed it's registration....it went out and found internet radio stations and is looking up album covers!
Many, many thanks to Dave and Kevin! I couldn't have done it without you!!
Rick

Happy New Year to all!

rchrdshelton 01-16-11, 12:23 PM Hey Kris! when your 5050Ms crap out, what is that they do? I put a bunch of dvds in mine and now it makes a "jackhammer" noise when it tries to put in or take out a dvd. Also, it seems to be stuck trying to get a dvd out of slot 381. Is this what yours do when you have to take them for repair?
Thanks,
Rick
If the same DVD gets stuck, check the thickness of the DVD against a couple of the others. Also check the smoothness of the outer edges. There have been a couple of DVD's that the changer just doesn't want to deal with. For those, I produce a copy of the DVD and load it into the changer. A copy doesn't appear to have an effect on the Entre / OpenGlobe ability to properly identify the disc.
If every DVD fails in slot 381, I'd look to see if that slot shows any damage or obstruction. The carousels on these changers are complex mechanical systems and they do need adjustment / repair more than I like to deal with. I just changed out a DV-5900M for a spare I kept because the carousel locked up.

My units have failed a number of different ways over the years:
- Won't read a disc (2)
- Disc won't spin (x4)
- Front Panel Display inop
- Carousel won't spin (x2)
Currently, 2 of my 5900's and my backup 5050 are functioning ok. My 3rd 5900 still functions, but the front panel display is out again. I know this will be a $250-$350 fix having fixed the same problem before on a different unit a few years ago, so I'm living with it for now. My HTPC is getting more use lately than my three 5900's + Escient Fireball.
If you're hearing a "jackhammer" noise, it could be a couple of things:
1 - stripped gear mech on the carousel
2 - something physically blocking the carousel or transport, like a disc that fell off inside or a broken piece of something floating around on the inside. Both have happened to me.
3 - there's a plastic shroud that covers the top of the carousel, and near the front of the machine it comes very close to the top of the discs. If the carousel is out of alignment, the tops of the discs could be rubbing against the shroud.
Have you taken the cover off? It's pretty easy to spot physical problems with the carousel, some of which you may be able to resolve yourself without taking the unit in for repair. Take the cover off (about 8 small screws), plug in the unit, and watch the carousel spin.

Ted Stanton 01-21-11, 04:17 PM Over time I have acquired a complete kenwood sovereign system. Thought it would be great. It seems to complicated for my liking. I could never get them to work together. Though they all seem to function well independently. I have decieded to sell the entre' and the dv-5900m. They are both in good functioning and cosmetic condition with only one defect. The dv-5900m has a broken shuffle knob. Broke off in shipping. Works perfectly with remote. $300.00 for both plus shipping. photos available. includes remote for both
Procussion72 03-16-11, 12:42 PM Hi Everyone,
I have watched this thread for a long time, and noted many of the suggestions made. Excellent work done by many over the years!
Even though this tread is *very* old, there are still some of us that continue to run our old Sovereign gear. I was not able to afford any of the Sovereign gear when it was new (and I really wished I could), so I have built up my system over the years as funds allowed.
I am running the VR-5900, 2 MX-5000 amps, Entre, and the DV-5900M mixed in along with new gear. Recently, I finally came across a second DV-5900M in superb condition (and a very reasonable price) to add to the now-old system. (Hey, it may be old stuff, but it still works pretty good!)
The Entre software was updated to 2.0.0.16 quite some time ago. A query on the firmware on both DV-5900s indicates v1, thus I am not able to pass the serial signal between the changers back to the Entre. In order to pass the serial information between the changers, a hardware change on the control comm boards would have to be made to pass the information. I also would need to update to v3 firmware. I'm not sure that this is even feasible given the age of the changers. If anyone can enlighten me it would be much appreciated.
Does anyone have a firmware update CD for the DV5900?
Even better than that would be to have a small file repository with the Netnamer, firmware updates, etc. for the few of us that are still running this gear. Thanks!
krichter1 03-16-11, 11:28 PM Sorry to inform you my friend but you're SOL. We all were required to send in our 5900/5050's in for a board swap to get the latest firmware to recognize the rs232 commands from one changer to another. Last year when I called Kenwood for another issue they told me they don't even support these machines any longer (no parts). :(
I am thinking of selling my setup anyone interested.
Entre - 120g hard drive.
DV-5900m - v3 may have a video issue but may have been TV mechanically it works well.
Linksys poweline ethernet adapter.
Possibly a Belkin Ethernet adapter.
A CD with all my hacks, mods, documents and files for the entre.
Any interest? I would like to sell it all as a set? Offers?

Ken2321 05-06-11, 12:03 PM Still using my entre and dv5050, ive recently hooked up the changer to onk 3008 and wow, what a difference that made upscaling! I wont be getting rid of that till it finally dies on me lol. I was looking at the sony bluray changer but i wouldnt like the idea of manually labeling all my disc as my only internet option is dialup, and sony i dont think has that option on thier changer. But glad found this thread.

I am surprised the Entre will work with the new receiver. I have been postponing getting a new HDMI/Audio Codecs receiver as I thought I would loose the functioning of the Entre. Do you still get the ability to categorize your CDs, DVDs, as you wish?
I have the 5900 receiver. I think the 5050 has the same upscaling chip. Is that correct?
Do you like the sound of your new 3008 as well as the 5050? I just assumed you were referring to the video quality comparison.:)

The Entre works fine with modern receivers. I'm using a Denon AVR-4810ci and it works well. You need to run analog audio cables if you want to listen to audio files stored in the Entre, and I run digital cables for audio from the DVD's. I no longer use the Entre to play music (but tested the function when I installed the new receiver), but I do use the full capabilities of the Entre's DVD library manager.

I haven't bought anything but BRs in about a year and not a lot of them. Are you still able to access the internet and pull in album covers and info. from Open Globe?
Thanks again for the information. I'm excited about being able to still use my legacy equipment (changer & Entre).:D

I never got the 5900 as the store i got my 5050 and entre went out of buisness before i could get the reciever so i stuck with my old onk sv515,so not familiar with what the 5900 could do for the entre. The only categorize i did was with entre which did it on its own.
I love the sound of the 3008! Plus upgrading from a near 20 yr old reciever the differences were night and day.the upscaling on the video is excellent, as with the audio. Am only using composite cable so far as havent figured out how to assign digital optical cable on the 3008. lets just say the tech on these recievers grew by leaps and bounds in 20 years, sadly my brain hasnt, kinda overwhelmed going from a 20 page manual for my old reciever to a 120pg one! but im getting there

Thanks dave, i was wondering why i couldnt get sound from entre and dvd changer using optical from dvd to entre to my onkyo 3008, i switched the optical going from dvd changer to entre directly to my onk and used analog for entre and it works great!!! Wonder why the optical out on entre wouldnt work hmm.

Ken, I'm not following you. Before I get a new receiver I want to understand the connection.
1. optical from changer to entre and optical from entre to onkyo doesn't work T or F
2. analog for entre from where and to where?
3. are you using both optical and analog?
Maybe I got it: you are using optical from changer to onkyo and analog from entre to onkyo?
Please help.:(
Thanks
Did you run
Ken2321 05-15-11, 10:26 AM Thats exactly what i did, i ran optical from kenwood dv5050 to opt1 on the onk,for video on dvd i ran component from dv5050 to entre then from entre to bd/dvd input on onk.for the music on entre i ran regular analog from playout on entre to bd/dvd analog input on onk. works good for me. If you are looking to copy the mp3's off of Entre's hard disc via FTP, that is not going to be an easy task. The file system scatters files everywhere. The entire folder structure runs extremely deep from what I recall. Depending on how much music you want to copy and if your unit is still functional, it would be far easier to just burn the music onto cdr's. I am not saying it is impossible to do what you want but you would have to sort through Entre's file system to find each file.
krichter1 10-02-11, 11:57 AM If anyone is interested in my very own custom changed GUI Entre PM me.
I will change the GUI to your last name for free if you are the lucky one to buy it!

Mkellyvich 10-05-11, 07:57 PM GUI looks nice! I'm considering selling my Sovereign system (3 working upgraded changers, 3 parts changers, Entre, 5900 receiver, MX-5000 amp and 4 Axcess portals). PM me if interested in any of the items. I still use one of my two Entres and the Axcess portals for music and internet radio, but I've switched to a VMC server and an OPPO BR player for movies.

krichter1 10-07-11, 12:08 AM Thanks. Yeah I think it's just time after all these years. I still have one complete Entre system for DVD's but now have three Sony 960's in my main rack and just use a 4x2 HDMI switcher to go between the three BD changers.

Using Ftp go to 7.06/media on your entre, and you should find the mp3's
If your collection is that big perhaps burning to BD-RW's, which is what I did for a friend, who upgraded his entre's HDD to 250GB's, via my firewire 800 blu-ray burner, then copied them to his PC's HDD

Shame to waste 130GB.

James A. McGahee 12-03-11, 02:30 PM I have a new Onkyo. It does not have a digital (optical or coax) out which was connected on my retiring Sovereign Receiver to the Entre (or the Sovereign Changer, can't remember). Does anyone know how to work around this lack of a digital out on the Onkyo. Haven't been able to get my new setup to work. Not sure if the lack of the digital out on the receiver really matters or not. I suspect it is for recording and my guess is that the absence of this connection is to prevent digital copying.
Any help much appreciate!!
Thanks-
Mkellyvich 12-16-11, 04:24 PM Digital out from receiver to Entre is only for recording. I didn't bother hooking up any of the digital or analog inputs to the Entre when I set it up after moving this fall. I only have the analog and optical outs from the Entre connected.
Cheers,
Mike
Procussion72 02-06-12, 11:25 AM For anyone still using an Entre in your system, you might be pleased to know that you can use your Entre with a modern wireless keyboard. I have tried a few different Logitech wireless combos, and the Entre works with all of them.
I recently purchased a Logitech MK320 wireless keyboard (with mouse) and was surprised when the Entre responded to the KB. There are many KB shortcuts listed earlier in this mega-thread which are very helpful if you have to manually enter any text, create playlists, etc. It sure beats having to "power push" the buttons on the Entre remote!
Here's a link to some of the commands
