My TV (Samsung HLP5063W) has one HDMI input & one DVI input, along with the ususl component, S-video, etc.

I connect my TiVo S3 to the HDMI TV input. I'd like to get an up-convert DVD player, but all I see is HDMI output.

Can I connect the DVD HDMI output to a HDMI>DVI adapter, then to the TV DVI input, and get video quality equivalent to HDMI?

I recognize that I'll need separate audio connection.

So long as the DVI input on your TV understands HDCP (check the documentation, many do, but not all), it should "just work". You could get and use something like Oppo Digital's switcher box if that doesn't work out for you, though...

Check monoprice .com for an HDMI to DVI cable should be around $5. You will still need to run the sound through composite or optical lines. DVI carries video only.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Samsung site says:

"DVI Digital Input 1 (24-pin DVI plug , HDCP-enabled "

What do you mean by "just work"? Will I be able to get HDMI video quality?

A good site. Thanks. Can get adapter for ~$4.00, and 6' DVI HDMI cable for about the same price.

Does up-converting result in a significant improvement in video quality?

The quality will be identical; HDMI is just a tarted-up DVI-D single link interface, the video protocol is identical. As you mention, you'll have to connect audio separately (since DVI doesn't understand the HDMI addition of digital audio, so it'll be quietly ignored), but otherwise it's functionally identical.

It's not going to make SD DVD video into HD-DVD/BD video quality, as that's mathematically impossible. However, it can smooth the video quite a bit, assuming the upscaler in the player is of good quality; this can make the video significantly nicer.
