If you don't mind spending 4 grand, it's probably the plasma Pioneer PDP-5010FD.

If you want to low-ball, the best bang for the buck is probably the RP (though not DLP) Sony SXRD KDS-50A3000 ($1,500, w/ free shipping!).

Under $3,000.

If I'd HAVE to guess, since you wouldn't mind a DLP, it would be a Samsung LED DLP (Samsung HLT5087SAX).

(BTW, that TV's under $1,500 on Amazon right now. W/ that in mind, you might want to get a bigger version, like a 56" HLT5687SAX -- under $1,700 on Amazon, or the 61" version....)

another one not mentioned would be the samsung 71 series lcd, between that and the xbr4/5 for the best lcd.

The best DLP IMHO: Sony KDS-50A3000, also available in 55" and 60" varieties. It has:

1080p, 120Hz, excellant video processing, great blacks, great colors, extensive video adjustments, lots of inputs, etc.

Even the sixty incher (KDS-60A3000) has an MSRP of $2200 and often can be had for about four Benjamins less than that on the street. They are awesome TVs, and you would have enough left of your budget to get a PS3, Wii, and Xbox 360.....
