My first post here.. and it's probably a stupid question.

I bought this today, thinking I could play guitar with the regular PS3 controller (like you can on GHIII on the 360). Whenever I try any of the single player modes, it says microphone not detected, and one is needed for the vocalist mode or whatever...

Someone else said if you don't have the guitar or drum set hooked up, it assumes you want to do the vocals. So I have no mic, no drumset, and no guitar, so I basically can't do anything?

Yeah, you're basically out of luck. You can't just play with a controller, like GH3. You need at least one of the instruments the game comes with. The mic in the game requires a controller, as the mic itself has no buttons.

there still might be hope for you, though. If you've skimmed the topics here, you'll see there's a patch that's supposed to be coming out. Now, everyone's assuming its a patch just to make the GH3 guitar compatible with Rock Band...but maybe it'll make the controller a playable instrument, too. No new word on this mysterious patch today, though. We're all gonna have to wait and see.

Okay, thanks. I think it's kind of ridiculous that they release the $60 version when it's useless by itself, but hey, that's my fault. Ignorance on my part.

I would give customer service a call. although the stand alone guitars are not available yet, they may let you purchase one through CS. However, the drums are where its at with this game, IMO.

I had no idea that you couldn't use the $60 version if you buy it! Does it say so on the back like "this game is useless without an instrument" ?

Good question! Although...:p...it wouldn't say it exactly in that way. Harmonix has purposely seemed a little vague about what you can use to play this game with. It probably doesn't even mention that you can't play it with just a controller.

Actually it does. Just looked, and right on the cover it says: "Requires a drum, microphone, or guitar controller to play. Rock Band is compatible with most music game controllers."

Ok, that last part is certainly up to some interpretation! What would constitute "most" in Rock Band's case, not including their own controllers? 1%? 5%? Zero%? Hmmmmmm...

Ahh, if it says that, at least it isn't AS misleading, but it is still a little silly/misleading to sell a $60 game that you can't play without purchasing more equipment. You should definitely be able to use the controller, if you so choose!

I couldn't imagine trying to play the drums with a controller. Your fingers would fall of in about 30 seconds. Espescially on those repeating notes where you hit it like 30 - 40 times in a row.

Um, seriously? buying rockband with no instruments? Seriously?

Yeah, I know it's very weird. It does really make you wonder who's buying just the game part by itself. And why!! Ok, unless of course, they think you can play it with a controller. But that wouldn't explain why Harmonix would sell just the game itself, without instruments. Obviously they would know it would be useless by itself?????

You know, the more I think about this game, the more I think it's a miracle that it was released at all! :p

They released the game seperately because people demanded it. They offically never claimed the lespaul controllers would work. They just said they were trying to make the game as compatible as possible with other controllers. The patch that was actually offically confirmed by HMX does indeed try to address the compatiblity issues. why it hasn't been released yet is unknown. HMX says it's been done for over a week now but sony hasn't posted it. Which leaves many people to wonder if Activision is holding it up. None of the three game companies are saying though(well HMX did comment but they commented that they can't comment on it right now but will comment when they can).
As for the statement on the box it's true. The GH3 les paul is the only music controller that currently works on ps3. however RB works with their own fender stratocaster, the wired X-plorer, the wireless and wired lespauls for the 360 and the ps2 strat which will be coming out later this month. And it's likely that old ps2 guitar controllers will work with teh ps2 RB. SO 80%(at least) of the guitar controllers on the market do in fact work with RB. Funny how no one expects Activison to release a patch to allow teh strat to work on GH3.
