The 720 set (10UKA) or the 1080 set (700)? Money is not a consideration.

Which set will have the better picture on SD, DVD, and HD?

Incidentally, I LOVE the commercial Panny, but I HATE the duck feet!!

If you plan to watch alot of SD content then Id suggest youd buy a 50" instead

Thanks, but not exactly the same question. I am not looking for the best VALUE, I am looking for the best performance on SD, DVD, & HD. I guess I should add that I will be sitting in the 7 - 12 foot range.

I would love to buy a Pioneer 6070, but by the time I get approval from my wife, they'll probably be gone. I'd LOVE a KURO, but it will probably be next Christmas before the price is at the level I am willing to pay. That leaves the two Panny sets, and I'm looking for the best picture, not just 1080p. So, can anyone comment on this?

I would go with the 1080 set for sure. No question. I can tell the difference between 720 and 1080 sets at 42" from 8 feet, easily. On a 58" I'm sure I could very easily see the difference at your maximum 12' range. The 1080 sets will elicit much more detail.

How will they do on SD and DVD compared to the 720p sets?

I love the 58PH10UKA as a recommendation, but you may want to consider the Samsung 5884. This will give you bang for the buck right now for a 58"er. The 58PZ700U is not too shabby at all. If you can find the 6070 you are lucky.

I just spent some time looking around for a 58" tv (both in some best buys and circuit city stores by me and on these forums), and decided on a plasma set over the lcds as well. I thought about getting a 720 set and saving some money for a while (about 1k), especially because the majority of viewing we are going to do will be over 10ft away, but in the end decided on a 1080p set (because we do sometimes sit closer, we CAN tell the difference on 58" sets when we look close, and we have the money).

Anyhow, after that, the choice was between the 700u and the 5884. I went to 3 different stores to see the sets (just in case the way they were set in one store or something was a fluke), and the 5884 just produced a better pic for my wife and I in all 3. I'm sure some may like the panny so I really recommend looking for yourself, but I believe the samsung also has a better warranty as well (and in my mind, the blacks and overall display were just better set).

Good luck!

So, Kad, how does the Sammie do with SD, DVD, & HD? Have you been able to view material in all 3 resolutions? What is your assessment?

Samsung 58" 5884 is the best TV for its value. Pricewise, the 5884 is better, so don't look at the 6010 if you can't afford it because a 5884+PS3+HD-DVD player+7.1 surround sound>>>>>>>>>>>>> Pioneer 6010.

People compare the Samsung to the Panasonic a lot but the Samsung blacks seem to be better by many opinions as well as mine. 5884 is compared to a lot of the other Kuros, there isn't a huge difference and people even say that some aspects of the Samsung are better such as the colors.

How is IR on this set? SD? DVD? HD? Any buzzing? How about the pedestal stand; is it well-made? Does it tilt?

The Panasonic professionals have a better PQ than the consumer models also a higher contrast ratio and better blacks than the 700u. Panasonic pros have a two year warranty as the Samsungs do, but Samsung has horrible customer service and one of the worst failure rates I have seen for plasma displays. The Panasonic professional model is one of the most reliable trouble free plasma displays with excellent customer service.

What about the horrible "duck feet" on the professional model? Is there ANY other stand available?

I am not sure of the stand options for the 58 inch size. There are a variety of stands available in the 50 inch and smaller sizes.

I believe you have said that wall mounting was not a possibility but have you considered a table stand with its own posts for mounting the display? There are many table stands which support a display on posts (similar to wall mounting) that are capable of a 58 inch display.

I'm fairly certain that the 58" 1080p model (TH-58pz700u) would have a stand that would fit the 58" professional model. Not positive though. If so, I'm sure you could buy that stand off of someone on this forum who wall mounted their TV.

If not, I like RichGuy's suggestion of getting a stand with pillars to mount the plasma to. That's what I did.

In short - no.
I asked this question in one of 10UK threads - look for the detailed explanation why.

If you get a 50", go with the 5080. 58", go with the 5884. That's what I'm doing as long as I can get the 5884 for $3000 in stores(price match hopefully!). I've looked at the Panasonics, but I see people comparing the Samsung to the Pioneer more often than the Panasonic to the Pioneer in terms of blacks. The Samsung has great colors, some say better than the Pioneer.

i love my samsung alot. its the best tv i think. i didnt look much into pioneer so much becuase there so high priced but i didnt not see a difference in the pioneer and samsung (dont bash me its just me) the 77u i seen could not compare to the 5084 color and picture wise and i think thats because of glare filter they have. but i didnt like the panasonics menu that much either.
just my opinion to.

The Samsung and Panasonic were compared to each other in a recent review. The Panasonic had better black levels. http://www.hdtvexpert.com/pages_b/2ofAKind.html
