If I run digital audio via optical from the PS3 to my older Onkyo receiver, will it output DTS or DD? My Toshiba HD-A2 converts DD+ tracks to DTS. I was hoping the PS3 would do the same. Probably wishful thinking on my part.

One of the better descriptions of what the PS3 can do: PS3 compatibility with SACD, HDCD, DTS-CD, DVD-Audio (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=938295). Follow the link to the guy's website, he has lots of good charts and well thought out narrative on the PS3.

Hi all, when I select DTS from ps3 menu I loose 5.1 sound when watching spidey3. My reciever is old without hdmi input but says DTS on it. Is this the newer DTS?
soI select dolby digtal and get 5.1 but only encoded at 640 kbps as shown when you press select during movie. Can I get a higher bitrate via optical?

To get DTS, the movie or game has to include a DTS or DTS-HD track. The PS3 won't convert dolby digital to DTS or vice versa.

640kbps is the maximum for Dolby digital.

I wouldn't recommend de-selecting anything. Make sure both DTS and DD are checked, and leave it at that. =\
