With the current HD DVR that Directv offers with new installations (I don't know the model exactly), can you connect a 6 pin firewire cable from it to the PC or Mac and capture the stream being played, in the same way it can be done with the Scientific Atlanta 8300HD that cable companies have? Sorry if this has been posted before, I'm very short on time and I can't start looking for that in countless forums.

DirecTV's boxes don't have IEEE-1394 ports, so no, that's not a viable option for DirecTV customers...

Cable companies are required by legislation to provide a functioning firewire port if the customer asks for it. So most do. Sat companies are not required to, so they do not at all. There have been painful schemes to capture from sat boxes, but there is no "out of the box" support for it.

I have a couple of DISH 921 DVR's with firewire ports. Too bad DISH never kept its promise to activate them.

Where can I look into those "painful schemes"?

There are none for the current boxes, it was possible to have a firewire or USB port put into D* receivers from a few generations back.
