View Full Version : 3 hour download?
mbrodie617 12-10-07, 03:09 PM Ok, so I finally hooked up my PS3 last night and decided to download some demos to try out. I was using the wired connection because I think I have the version 4 Linksys that no one can get to stay connected. Meanwhile, The Ninja Gaiden Sigma demo (which is 983 MB) took over 3 hours to download last night and right before it finished I got an error. Is it normal for these downloads to take this long or is there some change I need to make to ensure faster and smoother downloads in the future?
Thanks.
My longest has been about 35 minutes and i think that was Warhawk the night it came out. I'm not sure about what to do to speed up your DL though. I don't mess with routers too much if I don't have problems.
TheCrackedJack 12-10-07, 03:15 PM My normal download time for 1GB is about 10 hours, but that's just my connection. I'd be overjoyed to download close to a 1GB in 3 hours. But, that's just me.
confidenceman 12-10-07, 03:19 PM Some people experience incredibly long dl times. I've been one of the lucky ones, also, so my dls take very little time (I'm running one of those very same crappy old linksys routers that needs to be reset every other day). The NGS demo, for example, took less than a half hour to download.
I'm not sure what causes the slow times for some people. Could be your provider, could be your home network, could be your location; it's a mystery. Based on what others have been saying, if your dls take a long time, they probably will continue to take a long time in the near future.
Apparently, it was much worse for everyone early on in the console's cycle. Hopefully, that means that dl times will continue to improve as the console gets into more homes.
mbrodie617 12-10-07, 03:37 PM Thanks for the responses. I will try a different router. Maybe a wireless g router will go faster than my current wireless b router will.
PJ_Rage 12-10-07, 03:45 PM How fast do you download 1gb on your computer?
I average probably 10-15 minutes for a 1gb download from the PSN, and it is about the same on my computer from a good site. My cable internet is pretty good, I guess that's why?
If you are downloading 1gb in 3 hours, you are averaging about 93kb/sec download speed, which isn't good, but isn't that great by today's standards. I'm not up on my DSL vs cable, but that sounds like a speed that DSL might have?
I must be downloading at around 800-1000kb/sec to get some of the speeds I've seen.

Good question.

Exactly the type of ignorance I fight every day working for the phone company, trying to sell DSL. :) There is nothing inherently slower about DSL than cable service, it all depends on what speed you're getting/paying for. For example, I get 1.5M on my DSL which usually puts me around 160kbps. I friend of mine has 7M service and thats much faster. I've also seen very low 30kbps transfers over cable.
So please, for my sake, dont make broad generalizations about DSL being slow. :p
snookalo 12-10-07, 07:32 PM Well, I have ISDN. Think your dl'ing is slow, try this crap. Cable install in a few months though, so it's all good. :)

It is normal. If you look around the net, most people take two to three hours for a demo download. It has less to do with you and more to do with the PSN servers.
I have the dial up so that's the worst of all. I can't do anything as its pretty much pointless
PJ_Rage 12-10-07, 11:50 PM Good question.

So please, for my sake, dont make broad generalizations about DSL being slow. :pI wasn't really trying to make that generalization, but it was definitely true for a while, and I really think it still is. I don't think it is a false statement to say that, generally speaking, your average cable internet is faster than your average DSL internet. AFAIK the faster DSL packages are pretty expensive and *most* people don't get them.
In any event, you getting 160k/sec is about what I expected from 1.5Mbps DSL, and I thought that (1.5Mbps) was around the average DSL speed, but it may be up to around 3Mbps now? Alot of the cable internet is ranging from 5Mbps to 8Mbps, and mine is nothing special and is up to 12Mbps (comcast powerboost). To get that speed from DSL you are going to be paying a pretty penny. With DSL you'll likely be seeing around 3Mbps tops for the average consumer.
And there actually are technical limitations of DSL as compared to cable. Cable can achieve up to 30Mbps, technically, whereas most DSL (except VDSL) forms top out at 10Mbps. Not that the end user would see that high of a bandwidth from the average consumer grade service. But cable has definitely been increasing the bandwidth. Three years ago, my comcast could only hit 600k/sec downloading. But recently I've been able to touch 1.2 to 1.3mb/sec, and I've seen 1.5mb/sec max.
So, generally speaking, DSL sucks and is wayyyy toooo slloowwwww ;);):p:p:D

My cable is slow and I'm paying out the ass for it. I have the 3Mbps speed and I am paying $40 a month for it. Which I personally think is ridiculous. Not to get into a debate between which is better. Just saying internet rates are ridiculous in my area I can't imagine what they are in smaller city areas.

I can't remember if mine is $40 or $50 here (I'm pretty sure $50), but my parents in Rhode Island pay $30 for what used to be 3Mbps, but I think is now 5Mbps. I'm jealous ;)

I have been seeing the same thing with Comcast. I think I pay $50.00/month (including the $10.00 discount for having cable).
I am very impressed with the DL speeds of the PSN.

See a lot of people complaining bout DSL speeds. I have a friend who has DSL, and during the day he gets an easy 3-4Meg, but after about 2:30 his speed drops to 1 to 1.5 High School kids are out and at home. LOL :D
Good question.

Thats not true.. DSL does have a inherent problem. Distance from the CO. (Central Office) plays a big part in what speeds people can get out of DSL.
MIAaron 12-11-07, 12:06 PM I have comcast and the speakeasy test always shows 12M down and 3M up. We get 1mb/sec downloads on PSN. Even when we added a second ps3 they both get 1mb/sec at the same time. Online friends with FIOS(25M down and 5M up) get 2mb/sec.
PJ_Rage 12-11-07, 12:43 PM I can't wait until they offer FIOS for my location. That is a no brainer!!
GW-SMOkeY 12-11-07, 12:57 PM I'm running a 8mb pipe, and considering an upgrade to 12 here in Mesa AZ. However, I think it still depends on the setup.
If you have Cable available the disadvantage is that you will be on the shared network. Aka NODES.
While on DSL its still your own dedicated phone line to the house. Now if you are one of the lucky fellas and can get AT&T Fiber, and HZ service - Imo it sounds pretty good.
Either way I would not trade my cable service for DSL, since DSL can't ever deliver the same amount of bandwith Cable can. The negative part is I own a 2wire router at my parents house and is pointless now. Not to even mention that QWEST service charged them 44.95 a month for 1.5mb while I pay Cable for 44.95 and get 8mb service...
SamuraiXmas 12-11-07, 05:30 PM The speed you get from the PSN is different depending on the time of the day/how many people are using it. During the middle of the night when noone else was on, I've downloaded gig demo's in a matter of minutes. During peak usage hours (for the PSN, not for my ISP) I've downloaded gig demo's in 3 hours or more. If you have anything over a 6mbit connection, your download speed probably won't top out over the PSN. If you have 1.5/3mbit DSL, you should be maxed out everytime. If not, it's a failure of the PSN (since 3mbit DSL maxes out at, what, 350 kilobytes/sec?)
