View Full Version : Best Linux version for web browsing?

Okay, I did try searching but came up with some old threads. I'd like to install Linux on my 40GB PS3, and I was wondering what version might be the best for typical web browsing, viewing movie trailers and has the most up to date PS3 drivers. And of course which web browser to actually use with this Linux version.

Yes, I do have a PC but that's upstairs and my family thinks it'll be really cool to have a decent web browser downstairs in our family room on the PS3. I've already got a Logitech wireless (non-BT) keyboard. Any info or suggestions much appreciated!

Yellow Dog seems to be the most popular choice. My friend has a Linux PC he uses Ubuntu (spelled that wrong) on, he seems very pleased with.

Ubuntu was a good choice but the current installer disc has two or three bugs. They claim to be working on a new ISO to correct the problems. Right now I'd have to agree that either Yellow Dog or the older 7.04 Ubuntu release are best.

The kernel is going to through more updates which is breaking compatibility. There are rumours that full RSX access will be coming by Spring. That would bring some big speedups to the PS3 but it will also mean more driver/kernel changes.

Thanks all. I downloaded the current Linux Yellow Dog version - 5.0.2. The file I downloaded was a .ISO file. Can I just copy this to a DVD and install it from the PS3, or is there a special method I need to use? Thanks again.

No, you need to find instructions on how to properly burn an ISO file.

Active ISO burner on download.com should allow you to burn it to a CD/DVD and install it that way.
Edit: It's free by the way.

If you have Nero, start it and select Open. Find the ISO and select BURN.

Rambler,

Sounds like we jumped on the PS3 train at the same time. Please let me know how Yellow Dog works for you (ease of install and general ease of use). I'm very interested in giving this a try as well.

Forgive my ignorance here but I have yet to hook up my PS3. Doesn't it come with a web browser installed?

Yes but it's far from perfect.

Thanks for the info all. :) And what's the recommended browser to install along with Linux on the PS3?

Great to hear. Can you recommend any additional software to install with YDL? Links would be great if you can remember any. Regards...

I ran Ubuntu for about 7 months. But right now I'm waiting on the new installer for 7.10.

When is 7.10 expected, and is this a better option for the PS3 than YDL?

7.10 for the PS3 has already been out since October. It's just that the installer disc has some bugs in it. You can still install it but you have to do a few specific things to make it work.

I haven't tried YDL so I can't say. Ubuntu is pretty good but there are too many extras running by default. I preferred Gentoo except for the compile times.
