View Full Version : COD4 Players Roll Call

anonymouscuban

So I am officially hooked on this game and was looking for others to play with. Unfortunately, most of my buddies that used to play SOCOM with me have not gotten a PS3. Although I do have a few friends that play, it would be nice to play with some of you from AVS.

My official game night is Wednesday and I am typically on from 6:30PM - 1:00AM PST. Unofficially, I play whenever my wife is not home. :o My name is the same as here.

Post your name if you like to join the roll call. Send me a friends request if you'd like to get owned by a Cuban :D

Cant play against each other too well if we're partied up. Most of the people from here play under the TWW clan name together. Theres no way to confirm  but it is probably the biggest clan on COD4.

I think on Friday night we had over 20 people on at the same time. Best turn out to date. It may have been as high as 28.

I've been having trouble joining party invites from the TWW guys lately. Most of the time it just comes back with a connection error # and I'm booted to the menu. Anyone else experience this?

When I can get in, it has been great but I'm hessitant to accept invites now just because I hate to get knocked out of a game I'm already in if I can't connect to the party.

I will look you guys up. Like I said, I will be playing on Wednesday. Snuck in about an hour of play last night... man this game is awesome.

I'm now starting to shed my SOCOM ways of balls out Rambo running and gunning and playing much more covert. Seems to work better in this game. It's all about using cover in COD4. In SOCOM, I could routinely take on 3-4 guys and often own all of them without little loss in health. COD4... get stuck in the open for more than a couple of seconds and you're toast.

Ditto here. Glad to see a west coast clan. :)

BTW - Is COD4 a 720p game? I've got a 1080i display but whenever I put in the COD4 disc the displays switches to 720p.

DJSirReal
12-11-07, 08:41 PM
It's either 720P or 1080P but the only way to get it to display 1080P is by turning off 720P in the display setting of the PS3. Pretty Dumb if you ask me. Any developers reading this PLEASE put the option for screen res in the option of the game. ;)

Thanks for all the new members joining TWW. We hope you have a great time gaming with the group. We are starting a Bravo roster for COD 4 and that will require a couple of new folks to be the squad organizers. Alpha squad is pretty well established since we all started back in Rainbow Six Vegas. We would hope the Bravo squad will develop and grow into the same thing.

In addition, we will have a few members from the Alpha squad add a few Bravo squad members to their friend list to help integrate both squads into game parties. This kind of overlap is necessary due to the friend limit of the PS3. Our plan will hopefully get the new members in games with some of the older TWW members.

If anyone has a better idea of squad integration post your ideas at TWW. If anyone is interested in helping grow and maintain the Bravo squad please PM any of the mods or admins at TWW.

Thanks again

Just curious to see what game type seems to be popular with the AVSers. TWW seems to play Hardcore Search and Destroy for a more realistic feeling. Playing with one life per round makes for a more intense game when you have to really watch what your doing. Friday nights a big night for the TWW clan so if your interested follow the link in the sig below. Look forward to shooting you later. :D

Yeah TWW is big on Search and Destroy. I like that mode, good way to earn fast points (if you dont die) and if you do die. A good way to watch your teammates and see how they play. I was giggling like a lil girl last night in S&D. Im the last guy standing and one guy left of the other team. He goes to plant the bomb. I sneak up behind him as hes planting it...I wait and wait and just as hes done. I blast him the head with my shot gun. (points for the kill) then I defuse the bomb.. everybody with mics said "that was wrong man..." LOL good stuff!

It's always fun to take on the last guy and win, nothing more satisfying. Two nights ago it was just me and another guy, I planted the bomb already and layed a claymore at the front door of the construction building. I stood up and got into a fire fight and lost, he entered the building and BLAM i won that round. Vindication from the grave.

Got the game for Xmas and have been playing Team Deathmatch almost exclusively to get familiar with the maps. I much prefer the larger maps as they tend to be more realistic than the all out fragfests that occur at "Vacant". I usually score fewer kills than most of my teammates but tend to have far less deaths as well (now that the learning curve is over).

I've got a rank of 34 now but still prefer the M16 that I started with.

Also got the game for Christmas - haven't been playing too much, think I'm in the mid twenties as far as level.

Been playing a lot of Domination/HQ - not so good for my k/d ratio, but fun nonetheless. I'm up for whatever.

really wish this game had a push to talk button though.

I kind of like the open mic for shooters like this. Sometimes shooting, running and pushing a mic button for help doesn't work out to well. There have been games were the enemy can hear your mics so be careful what you say. And i'm aware of the evesdrop perk but i never use it and have heard the enemy.

Well - its nice to not have to push a button to communicate, however listening to some guy yelling at his kids can get old. That, and the people that feel the need to narrate the entire game because they have a mic. I usually turn my headset on and put it on the couch next to me unless I'm in a party or the majority of my team has headsets.

That is the reason we started gaming together. When you have a team or party with just people you play with regularly it eliminates the 12 year old gansta wanna-be's screaming stupid crap into the mic. Most times we can get 11 or 12 TWW members in a ranked room together through invites/party system, and those games are the most fun we have.

Yeah that can get old but i play with a team that everyone wears mics and communicates well. I was using a wired logitech mic with a mute button and it died a few days ago. I'm now using a Blue tooth with no mute and i'm probably now one of those guys with the wife talking in the background while the baby cries. Sorry.

From the XMB on the far right menu is an option to "Add A Friend". In order to invite friends into games your playing they have to be on your XMB list.

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger. I emailed Activision when I started getting the DW session create error 102 - 'BD_EXCEPTION_IN_DB' error yesterday. Here's the response I got from them today:

Thanks for contacting customer support.

Since you've installed the update, try turning off the PS3 and power cycling your router and modem. Basically, unplug everything, then plug it back in after a minute to reset it. If that does not work, then delete the update from the XMB menu. The update is the Game Folder in the Game Data Utility. Once that is deleted, go into the game and the update will re-install. Wait at least 30 seconds in the multiplayer lobby when trying to get into a game.

If you have any other questions, please contact customer support through the website.

I put my PS3 into DMZ mode and it's now at Nat1, but it's still not helping with the online issues. I'm going to try their suggestion again, but I really don't think it's going to help. :(

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger. I emailed Activision when I started getting the DW session create error 102 - 'BD_EXCEPTION_IN_DB' error yesterday. Here's the response I got from them today:

That's just some generic BS that they emailed everyone for their response. If you could connect before, then it's not your setup. It's IW's servers.

Can any one get on a game?
For the last two days I have not been able to find a game, and only get the screen where I am the only person and I am waiting for people.

The last couple of days I have noticed the same thing. This is what works for me: Do not sit and wait at the location you have mentioned. If the "getting match quality" does not almost immediatly go to "waiting for players" leave the lobby and attempt to search again. I have waited minutes to find a game by letting it sit in the "waiting for players" mode. I can always find a game in less than a minute by getting out of the lobby and searching again.

Of course this may not work for you or anyone else, but its better than sitting for up to 10 minutes.

Also, this is in team deathmatch. I'm not sure if it matters.

I had the same issue today, then I joined up with some of the guys and we would get right into a game. It's almost like it's easier to get in a game as a group then it is getting in as a single.

That's what I pretty much figured. :(

EDIT: Though I was thinking that the recently released CoD4 update may have had an effect on online play requiring what Activision had indicated to do. I'll be giving it another shot when I get home this evening, but my expectations aren't high.

On a side note - since putting my PS3 in DMZ mode, the PS3 no longer sees my WMP11 media server. I checked WMP and it's still showing my "unknown device" like before, but the PS3 is not seeing the media server. Do I need to get the PS3 out of DMZ mode for this to work correctly?

I doubt it. Yes we have all experienced it before but the message seems to be a new one. It's IW's servers, not you. IW is just sending you the email to spin it off on them and make you think it's your setup. It's not your setup. Do you have issues getting on any other On-line games? that's why I know it's IW, not you

You sure there is not some setup element to the problems. I do not run wireless and I have never had issues such as downloading settings or other odd error messages even when others were having the same problems. I think there is something inherent in various wireless routers that COD is conflicting with.... and that damn VPN the old lady uses!! :D:D

What time are the people that are able to get into matches playing?

I can get on fine at 1:00 p.m. EST and play for an hour or so, but when I get home from work anytime after 6:00 - Impossible - except for Headquarters Matches.

TDM is a no go, same with Ground War and Domination. Sometimes ground war works, but as a TDM game with 18 people - weird but true.

I assume this has to do with all the new holiday PS3's out there and the increased traffic (it probably wouldn't be hard to find a game at 3:00 a.m), but at prime time - between 6:00 and midnight it is procing to be impossible.

They need to fix this and quick or people are going to look elsewhere for their on-line gaming fix.

Yea going prestige kind of sucks when losing all of your perks. IW should patch it and allow you to have an additional perk to use for each prestige rank. Or allow you to chose a default perk from the ones you have say like I go prestige and I can default stopping power and then set the 3 in my create a class so there for I'm actually using 4 perks, do this for each prestige rank in the end you would be able to use 13 perks :). Then this would be a definite incentive to go prestige and keep moving up the ranks.

Regarding the recent connection issues:

Hey Everyone --

As you know everyone is back at the studio in force as of today and the day has been full of discussion regarding the PS3 version. This isn't an update thread, but a heads up to an update coming. I'm going to have an update for you in the near future (probably tomorrow) regarding the server issues you may have experienced over the holiday break while attempting to play online in Call of Duty 4 PS3; this update should give you all the background information on the issue and some fixes that should be going into effect.

Essentially, today we're getting everything in order for this, so that I can update you tomorrow and keep you dialed in to exactly what's happened, happening, and coming.

Let me know if you have any questions, now that we're all back in the studio keeping on top of this and most importantly steady responses back to all of you will be greatly improved.

For those having trouble connecting, IW has posted there is some action ening done to adress the issues

Firstly, on behalf of Activision and DemonWare, I’d like to apologize for the difficulties you’ve experienced while playing the PlayStation 3 version of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare during the holiday season.

The fact is that we’ve experienced an unprecedented load on the DemonWare backend servers, which has steadily increased since late December beyond our expectations. In spite of all of our planning and precautions, the extreme load revealed several issues. These issues triggered unscheduled downtime this past month. As we encountered issues, we deployed additional hardware and/or optimized the server infrastructure to keep the service up and running. However, while the servers were active for the vast majority of the time, many players experienced significant wait times repeatedly when joining games.

To overcome this issue, we’ve implemented a fix today, which should dramatically improve the time it takes to join an online game. And, in order to make additional improvements we are briefly taking the servers offline tomorrow, Wednesday January 9th at 4:00 a.m. PST

As a rule, we try to avoid scheduled downtime whenever possible. However, at this juncture we will need 1-2 hours to update a number of server infrastructure components. We apologize for any short-term inconvenience this may cause, and appreciate your ongoing support and patience.

Our expectation is that the server load will continue to increase as system bottlenecks are removed. So in the coming days, we will continue to monitor our system and make further optimizations and improvements as necessary. We will be deploying additional hardware to improve our database throughput and load handling. In addition to the added hardware, we are further optimizing components of the underlying server software to improve performance. We hope to be able to hot deploy these updates while the system is live. In the event that the system requires further scheduled downtime, we will post a message both here and in-game via the “Message of the Day” to keep everyone informed.

Rest assured that we are taking every possible action to insure that your Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare online PS3 experience is smooth and trouble free. We apologize for the trouble this has caused and ask for your understanding and cooperation as we get things sorted over the coming days.

Thanks,

Steve Pearce
CTO, Activision

I just started playing online early last week, and was getting all manner of body parts handed to me by more experienced players for the first couple of days. However, I've been getting the hang of it fairly quick, and I'm already up to level 25 with about 11-12 hours of online play. You'll get the hang of it too.

Some advice to help you survive early on:

Move slowly and carefully until you get the hang of the maps. Don't go rushing out in the open, because there will be someone in a second-story window waiting to pick you off. Don't let the gung-ho attitude of the run-and-gun advocates get to you. There's nothing wrong with picking a vantage point and sizing up the situation before you make a move.
On the other hand, if you kill someone from cover, get out of there as soon as you can. If they know the map well enough, the kill-cam will tell them exactly where you are, and they're liable to come gunning for you once they respawn. And remember that most buildings have at least two entrances.
I'd recommend doing Team Deathmatch instead of Free-For-All, since it's not you against the world and you have teammates to rely on. (Or draw fire, which is just as useful.)
Don't worry too much about perks -- they'll come in time, and they're not going to make or break your performance in the game when you're just starting out.
The two perks you do need to watch out for in other people are Martyrdom (dropping a grenade when they die) and Last Stand (pulling out a pistol and taking a few shots while they're bleeding to death). As a general rule, once you kill someone, run away from the body, not towards it. Martyrdom you can spot by listening for the clink of a falling grenade when they die. The best indicator for Last Stand is that you don't get points for the kill immediately. If that happens, either get out of their line of sight and wait for them to bleed out, or put a few more rounds into them quickly.

I've never been a fan of online play in general, but I've been finding COD4 weirdly addictive. There's enough flexibility in the game to allow for different play styles (witness the bitter arguments about which guns are the best), and the guys with fast-twitch reflexes don't always win. You'll find yourself getting better pretty fast.

I worked my way up to Level 7 or 8 last night. The last game of the night was the first one that I had more kills + assists than deaths. I can't get over the 6 kills mark. Your point about not running out into the open because of snipers is spot on. Can't tell you how many times I got picked off by a guy sniping. Sometimes, I'd get sniped with just my head popping around a corner. On the kill cam, I could barely even see myself and I'm playing on a 55" plasma! The most frustrating deaths were the ones where an opponent was shooting at a teammate that they could see and the bullet would go through a wall or container and get me too.

Silenced weapons are great when I can steal one that's laying on the ground and hide in the corner of a room that one of my teammates is shooting from. Lots of easy kills. On the other hand, I got popped a ton by guys that "knew" I was behind a dresser and I'd never even fired from that position.

Getting a kill is almost as exciting for me as when I get a submission locked on in jiu jitsu...

I know you guys are on alot. Im going to add a few of you to my psn list, but we gotta start playing more than just S&D. I like playing with you guys avarice and fuseman and dub and bmc but I absolutely DETEST S&D thats why I usually either ignore the invites or quit after a few rounds.

Plus, eventually, I plan on setting up a clan to do gamebattles with and I need to recruit some talent:p

Congrats on your progress! It's a big moment when you start getting a better than 1.0 K/D ratio in individual matches, and even better when your overall K/D starts climbing. As for the guys killing you when you're in hiding, bear in mind that if the enemy team is doing well, they're going to have UAV recon going most of the time, so they know exactly which corner of the room you're in before they walk in. That, combined with the Deep Impact perk (increased weapon penetration), can also explain some of your shot-through-the-wall deaths.

Just keep at it, and work on your marksmanship. The M16A4, despite being a starter weapon, and being limited to three-round bursts, can be one of the deadliest weapons in the game in the right hands. It's also worth sticking with each weapon long enough to at least complete the Marksman I challenge so you can get the red-dot sight and the associated bonus points. The Stopping Power perk is your friend when you're starting out, since it gives you a better chance of a quick kill when you get your sights on a target.

This game does give you a real rush sometimes when you're doing well: had a couple of thrills last night when I found myself with a mixed team going TDM against three or four guys from the same clan using mics and coordinated tactics, and we managed to beat them. (I'd been on the same team as the clan guys in a previous match, so I could tell how good they were.) Actually pulled off a few good kills by taking down one of them from cover, and then leaving behind a couple of claymores as surprise gifts for the rest of them who were converging on my position.

The Stopping Power perk is your friend when you're starting out, since it gives you a better chance of a quick kill when you get your sights on a target.

.
I agree, i prefer the 3 shot burst and i like to pair that w/ the G3 for more accurate shooting (single shot bursts). I am up to level 51 (i had surgery recently, so i was stuck at home, helped out alot) I am loving this game

Also agree w/ keeping moving, cant stick around in one spot for too long.

I got popped a ton by guys that "knew" I was behind a dresser and I'd never even fired from that position.

Getting a kill is almost as exciting for me as when I get a submission locked on in jiu jitsu...

Play long enough and you will know where people are before you see them. jiu jitsu. nice (great art) its kind of like me giving someone a roundhouse kick in Muay Thai

Just thought I'd add my name to the pile :) Psn Id is RTStump. I'm loving this game so far - very happy that I purchased it. The on-line's the closest thing I've had to the BF games since my computer became to old and decrepit to run any past the vietnam version. I've noticed a lot of people complain about game connections? I've not had many problems connecting, and when I do I find it's just a matter of exiting the game and reconnecting, seems to fix most problems. Happy hunting!

On the other hand, if you kill someone from cover, get out of there as soon as you can. If they know the map well enough, the kill-cam will tell them exactly where you are, and they're liable to come gunning for you once they respawn. And remember that most buildings have at least two entrances.[/LIST]

One of my favorite things to do in Free For All is nail people from a good vantage point, then once I kill a couple, I place claymores at the entrance(s) and wait for them to come to me... Usually a quick way to get an Airstrike :D

Played this morning and am up to Level 12 or 13. There are a couple of maps that I'm getting better at and a couple that I can't do anything on. Was playing Ground War on Deep Cover (right name? -- it's the one with the dry ravine/creekbed running through it). The opposing team had superior position early on and sniped the crap out of my team.

Played Sabatoge a couple of times as well as HQ. Sucked at both of those formats big time.

I'm working on my SAW perks and just got past the 75 kill mark. I like the grip having less recoil, but losing the red dot is tough.

Still getting killed by guys that should be able to see me and their team doesn't have UAV and/or I'm using UAV Jammer as a perk. I am solidly above 1:1 k/d in most games now and really enjoy the Ground War Domination and TDM games. Seems like those 2 force people to shoot more, lighting up my radar with juicy targets!

I have the ability to enter a clan name now. How do I join/get invited to a clan? How do I "meet" people on the game to invite them to join a match? Do they have to be in my PSN friends list?

The map is called Overgrown. It is tough map when the whole other team is sniping. We ran into that yesterday and they demolished our team.

Last night was my first day online, man I suck, during the 5 matches probably I just killed 8 people and died 60 times.
