Ok, I have done the obligatory search before posting this to the board. I have component cables running from my PS3 to the tv and an optical cable from the PS3 out to a Denon AVR 3801. I got the original symphony upon the first start up but once I adjusted sound settings to include optical cables, checked off dolby digital and dts, I have heard no sound from navigating the XMB, no sound from the PS Store, no sound from the Ninja Gaiden Sigma demo, no sound from the darkness blu ray disk and no sound from Crank blu ray movie. I have tried changing my audio settings on the receiver to dolby digital, dts, 5 channel stereo (which is analog), 2 channel stereo and still i am getting no sound... any ideas?

Thanks

make sure the ps3 isnt outputting at a sample rate thats unsupported by your receiver

The only sample rates I have checked are dolby digital, dts and two pcm settings that i can't change. I know my receiver supports dolby digital and dts, the other two sample rates, i'm not so sure about.

Checked your cabling? just plug it in at the PS3 end and make sure you can see the red light at the other end. I had a look at your receiver it seems it has multiple optical inputs, does it automatically select or do you have to manually select which one to use?

I got it. I'm so stupid. I spent more than a day fighting with my receiver and the ps3 settings... helps to make sure the cable is plugged in... :(
