View Full Version : Tversity vs. Twonky
Pikasauce 12-11-07, 11:53 AM All,
I've been trying to find comparisons between these two media servers and how their performance differs (better or worse) on the PS3. Has anyone done a comparision?
Currently I am using Tversity with both my PS3 and roku soundbridge; it works good but I was just curious if one was better than the other.
I use Nero home and am pretty happy with it, would like to see more control over output codec but everything works pretty well
Personally I use Tversity. It work for my needs which are
steraming mp3
streaming photos
streaming avi (this one is slow but I blame my 5 year old PC). One good reason to upgrade.:D
Only thing I did not like is cover art for streaming mp3 but I guess I will be added later on
Check here (http://forum1.netgear.com/showthread.php?t=5622) for a comparison
All,
I've been trying to find comparisons between these two media servers and how their performance differs (better or worse) on the PS3. Has anyone done a comparision?
Currently I am using Tversity with both my PS3 and roku soundbridge; it works good but I was just curious if one was better than the other.I've been using Twonky with the PS3 (and HR20 DirecTV HD DVR) but I recently switched to TVersity because of it's capability to transcode .avi files. Tversity also transcodes a few more music formats. As for photos they're about the same. Twonky doesn't work as well with the HR20 anymore for a large photo collection. Of course, long term, TVersity is free.
One thing with TVersity, installation of the TVersity Codec Pack caused corrupted playback of mpeg video with my Adobe Photoshop Elements catalog and even with WMP. I already had the codecs installed that I needed. That was the problem. So, install them (FFDshow, etc,) only if you need them.
Edit: Of course, the PS3 wil soon natively be able to play .avi files. Playback/trickplay should improve with native playback.
Pikasauce 12-11-07, 02:51 PM I guess I should have been more precise in my intial question: I don't really care about video playback; I mainly am interested instreaming mp3's to the PS3. Does twonky do a better job than tversity or is it a wash?
perpetual98 12-11-07, 04:03 PM I've done just about zero configuration of tversity and mine played MP3s fine right out of the gate. I haven't dinked around with cover art though.
I'm still looking for a solution to play my ripped DVDs through the PS3 so I can get rid of my movie server. I put almost all of my kid's DVDs on there so that they don't get all mucked up from them handling the DVDs themselves. If I can eliminate another box, I'd be happy. I don't even need them to stream via the network, I'd just like to be able to play them on my PS3, even if it was via an external hard drive (which I have). They're currently all in VOB, IFO type format.

Check out MeGUI also, that may not do DVD's, but it' seems to have alot of different support for codecs.
I've found that Twonky always shows up on my PS3. Every now and then I'll have to restart TVersity. It might be due to my continuing to add media files to TVersity and refreshing media. Just something I noticed. I wish TVeristy had better support for "Custom" menus. I did follow one of the developers post on getting TVersity to use "Custom" so that it mimics my folder structure as it is on my PC. Now when I go scroll into an album folder, the songs are alphabetically listed.
I may have to do some more tweaking to my "config.xml", but I've rendered my custom menus useless a few times and I've had to start from scratch again, so now I'm cautious.
Pikasauce: For mp3 streaming, either Twonky, TVeristy or even WMP11 will do. It would be a wash. IMO: I don't like TVersity's default menus and Twonky is not free. If you have WMP11, I would stick with that. To be clear, I am using TVersity, due video transcoding. But if it's only mp3's your concerned with, they'll all do what you need.
jmystikcfl 12-13-07, 08:11 AM Let me throw this out there. Up until yesterday I used Tversity because, well, it's free. The down side is that I have to have my pc on to use it. Well, I finally got my NAS200 set up. I think it uses a version of Twonky as it's media server, but it seems to work very well. Playing around with it, I was able to stream MP3s to my PS3 and my PC (using WMP11) at the same time. The box will set you back about $130ish depending on where you get it, plus whatever you want to spend on a hard drive, but it's totally worth it to have all your MP3s available all the time without the annoyance and heat of having a PC turned on. And it worked right out of the box.
instantpop 12-13-07, 11:54 AM What's a good client for the Mac?
I don't know about "client", but I believe there is something called Twonkyvision that is a DLNA server for Mac. I don't have a Mac, just going from memory on this. Might be a client also.
jaakennuste 11-01-08, 11:29 AM I'm really happy with Twonky. Tried several, including MS Media connect and Dlink's server. one of the maid advantages of twonky is UI speed in shuffling around in large libraries. I have >0,5 TB of media, tens of thousands tracks and videos. Artists index is superb, having 300+ artists. Custom library tree is handy either.
