I've just purchased a HD70 and I am setting up the room. I'm going to ceiling mount so I'm trying to work out which connection styles I should be using. component vs HDMI vs VGA. I only currently have the component cables, so that I why I am asking instead of just trying and comparing.

I would be running optical sound to a receiver straight from the xbox.

I've heard that the VGA looks washed out but that it is the only way to upscale DVD's to 720p, is the trade off worth it? Or is that not true anymore?

Component is cheaper (which is nice) but if I can get visible better quality with vga or HDMI its worth the upcharge.

THANK YOU.

HDMI will also upscale your DVDs (to 1080p if your equipment can take it). I've only used HDMI though, so I can't compare. You can get a cheap HDMI cable from Monoprice, but unless you have the Elite, you will either need to buy the dongle for the optical or hack up your component cable to use optical.

Go with HDMI. Search the boards for the component cable hack. You'll need to tear your component cable apart to make it fit with an HDMI cable so you can use the optical out on the component cable. Either that or you could pay MS $50 for their overpriced HDMI cable/audio dongle package.

When running to my ceiling, I ran all: VGA,HDMI, DVI, Component, etc. I only want to do it once. Everything is connected to a switch and my receiver. HDMI would be best for you but, I use more than a 360 to mine and need the flexibilty. Monoprice is good for the cables and RAM Electronics has nice stuff too. VGA is better than it was and HDMI upscales too.

Are there any post or documents out there that gives greater detail on what you get with each cable type? A good, better, best kind of thing? I have a projector also, but when I tried to pass it through my Yamaha HTR 5990, I would get picture....but no sound, which is really frustrating.

MS updated the Xbox to allow adjustment fo the black levels, so VGA shouldn't be washed out for anyone anymore.
