View Full Version : Just got D* How do I get locals in HD? wolvie70 12-11-07, 07:37 PM Just got D* hooked up and don't have any local HD channels. How do I go about getting them. At the risk of offending, the best advice is to read the instruction manual. Once you get your OTA antenna connected, you record the same as the sat channels. If D* installed an HR-20 box, you should be able to use an antenna to receive your locals in HD, assuming they broadcast in HD. You can record OTA with the HR-20. wolvie70 12-11-07, 08:06 PM Sorry for the misunderstaning, I have the D* HD receiver with DVR. He told me the model number was something 21. Is it possible to record my locals in HD using the D* recorder. I do not see any input that I could use unless I can use a splitter and feed the signal in thru sat2 maybe? steelersfan21 12-11-07, 09:04 PM Unfortunately you have the HR21, which includes no OTA tuner. You're going to need to use the TV tuner for OTA which likely includes no recording function. I don't know if you can diplex OTA and SAT before plugging in to the receiver. Try and see if D* will give you an HR20 which has OTA capacity. pen15nv 12-11-07, 09:05 PM Sorry for the misunderstaning, I have the D* HD receiver with DVR. I just can't figure out why D* would install that box in a DMA that doesn't have HD LiL. The 20s should go to those DMAs without and the 21s to the DMAs with. How hard is that? wolvie70 12-12-07, 12:19 AM Thanks for the response guys. I will give D* a call and see if they can help me out on the receiver. Why would they not give me the proper one. That or they should give me those E and W coast feeds (i doubt thats happening). mjones73 12-12-07, 08:30 AM "Why would they not give me the proper one." Because the HR21 is the new model and you get whatever the local installers have in stock. If you can't get one through D*, you may need to return your HR21 and obtain an HR20 from a 3rd party vendor that can confirm they have them in stock. adb 12-12-07, 01:49 PM Thanks for the response guys. In my opinion D* wants to have people pay for the locals via them rather than be able to get them OTA free as they plan to cover most of the country with locals and that is why the new receivers don't have the OTA input. To get E and W coasts requires waivers from local stations in your area and I don't know of any that are granting waivers now. This is not something D* can bypass. rlj5242 12-12-07, 03:17 PM If you can get an HR20 or want to just watch live HD, then check out the local thread that covers your DMA - link (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=12463691#post12463691). There are a lot of knowledgable people in there as well as engineers from the local stations. I haven't read the entire thread since I haven't been back to the area since grad school (go Hogs) but there should be some people who live close to you who get OTA HD. -Robert wolvie70 12-12-07, 09:56 PM I can get the channels OTA. What I want is to be able record HD locals on the DVR. I would even pay for locals if they are HD and I can use the DVR. They have a 30 satisfaction policy I believe. That may be my alternative as I am not happy right now. rlj5242 12-12-07, 11:26 PM You need the HR20. Call and complain. They may send you one in exchange for your HR21. They may offer to credit your account if you go and buy an HR20 from Best Buy. It all depends on how valuable you are as a customer. Unfortunately, you are new and that puts you in the worst position for bargaining. -Robert ws6guy 01-13-08, 06:57 PM Guys I'm in the same boat here as the OP. Except I can get some locals in HD through D* but not CBS, which is pain if there is a game on that I want to catch in HD. I have the HR21 box so I cannot hook the antenna up to it but can I just hook the antenna up to the TV with out causing any problems. I would just have to change from HDMI input for D* to TV for the Antenna correct? Thanks bfdtv 01-13-08, 07:07 PM Last week, DirecTV announced the AM21 add-on for the HR21. The AM21 plugs into the USB port on the HR21 and adds two OTA tuners. It will be available late February or early March for $59. mjones73 01-13-08, 09:36 PM "I have the HR21 box so I cannot hook the antenna up to it but can I just hook the antenna up to the TV with out causing any problems. I would just have to change from HDMI input for D* to TV for the Antenna correct?" As long as you have an ATSC tuner in your TV, correct. |
