View Full Version : Mass effect is this a game or a story?
DerekinMerrick 12-11-07, 10:38 PM Ok I have been playing for like an hour or more. I have killed some stupid gas guys and little flying things. Now I keep going back and forth in this district listening to people talk about stuff I could care less about. Will I ever get to do anything or does this game take like 5 hours before it starts becuase I am getting so bored? Nice graphics but its all story so far. And money I got to the first place to buy anything and I had not even close to get anything except some armor I bought and I cant use. How do I get money without fighting find it?
Thanks

DerekinMerrick 12-11-07, 10:57 PM Pretty dumb
Nics1246 12-11-07, 11:36 PM The first two hours or so are pretty slow. But it picks up. Mass Effect is one of the best games I've ever played. If you like RPG's there's just no way you can not like this game. In fact, the only other RPG I have ever liked other than this one is Oblivion. And IMO, this is much more addictive than Oblivion.
mboojigga 12-11-07, 11:47 PM It is an RPG what is the surprise here. The story is what is supposed to heavy for this type of game.

1- Its a Western RPG so you're expected to play out the story; its not given to you as pre-rendered CGI. The story you get is the story you choose. If you really don't care what the folks have to say, tell them so and see what that gets you.
2- The way to make money is to talk to people and get assignments and/or go flying around the galaxy exploring and/or fighting bad guys. The tougher the bad guys, the more money you get. The higher your level, the more money you get. But to do that, you need a starship and you have to earn it by... talking to people and carrying out assignments.
BTW, it is highly reccomended you try to reach 1 million credits ASAP. And when you do get control of the Normandy, try to do as much of your planet-side fighting afoot; you get more XP points by killing bogies that way than by using the Mako.
It is really an excellent game but you can't just buy the game; you have to buy *into* the game. You have to become Shepard to really enjoy it. And you have to take the people around you seriously; they do have useful things to say and some even have "feelings". And they are depending on you to save the galaxy.
Now go get Saren and come back with your shield or on it.
random tek hed 12-12-07, 03:13 AM If you think story and dialogue are a boring waste of time, you have no business playing Mass Effect. This is not a Gears of War spatter fest;it's a western style RPG where story and character development are the most important things.
Judging by your comments, I would tell you to stop playing and not even waste your time.
AHDTVDiet 12-12-07, 04:14 AM It's a story. Dialouge is the biggest aspect of the game...unless you tell everyone you dont have time and then you will get a different story then those who actually talk to people. You will also make less money which is gotten by doing side missions, which are gotten a lot by talking to people.
totalownership 12-12-07, 04:18 AM So this game has basically copied the TV series Firefly? Or those who saw the movie Serenity
random tek hed 12-12-07, 04:36 AM So this game has basically copied the TV series Firefly? Or those who saw the movie Serenity
I'm sure it's inspired by those, but I don't think it's a blatant rip-off or anything like that. That's going to be based on your opinion though.
Anyway, it's more like the Dune movie or BattleStar Gallictica than anything else,IMO.
AHDTVDiet 12-12-07, 05:13 AM No, firefly was almost exclusvily about humans. This game has humans trying to prove themselves to the older "more important" races. There are also no bullets or cowboy hats.
So this game has basically copied the TV series Firefly? Or those who saw the movie Serenity
Not even close. This has more of a Star Wars type feel and is very epic. The mood more reminds me of the old Wing Commander games, but with FPS type action.
...
BTW, it is highly reccomended you try to reach 1 million credits ASAP....
Where did that come from? The only thing I ever really bought anywhere close to the beginning of the game were health and grenade slot expansions. Topped out at 999,999,999 credits. Buy the Spectre gear near the end. Other than that, don't worry about money, IMO. You will find all the gear you need. Can't remember using money for anything else, other than giving some dude 20 credits so he would have money for food.

If you want something else to do, leave the citadel and go on the main-quest plot line (what the council told you to do) you can follow your journal for the main quest to move it along. Once you leave the citadel (takes a few minutes to talk to the council) then you go to the next planet and do more fighting.
However, if you are bored with the citadel, you will probably be bored with the rest of the game. Its an RPG after all.
Johnsteph10 12-12-07, 08:45 AM Wow. What. a. horrible. thread.
Maybe you should have read about the game before actually buying it?

First of all who ever said I bought this game? And I love Final Fantasy but after 20-30 minutes you are playing the game. Its been like 2 hours and I am still running around fighting nothing and doing nothing but talking to ****** aliens. And how do you know where to go? Theres nothing on my map????? Do they put an arrow up or something or do I have to walk around this huge world and hope I end up at the right spot?
Thanks
BillKen 12-12-07, 10:08 AM There are actually some pretty fun fights within the Citadel before you ever leave it (and it didn't take me more than 2 hours to find them) - you've obviously just not spoken with the right npc's yet - or continued the quest lines already given to you yet. I think once you find those fights you'll like it better. I say give it another whirl before you write it off.

Yikes. Your right.
fjtorres 12-12-07, 10:19 AM Where did that come from? The only thing I ever really bought anywhere close to the beginning of the game were health and grenade slot expansions.
Getting to 1 million creds opens up the Spectre gear.
Which is significantly better than anything you can buy or find anywhere short of the endgame.
So getting Spectre gear early multiplies your combat power, which lets you take on opponents on foot that would otherwise require the Mako cannon.
This in turn earns you more XP and money per mission so you can level up faster and buy more high-end gear for your crew.
Its a feed-forward loop that begins with getting to a million.
Now, on latter play-throughs Spectre gear is available from the beginning so the cash threshhold goes down.
But basically, the game reward loops favor those that manage resources most efficiently.
As I said, this is NOT a JRPG and anybody expecting JRPG play is barking up the wrong tree.
Also, this is not the best game to play on a rental.

Hope you didnt rent it. No way you're going to get thru it in a Blockbuster\Hollywood time period. Maybe a GameznFlix or similar would make more sense?
Somehow you got the impression from somewhere that this game was about a lot more fighting and a lot less "talking to ****** aliens". Did you know that you learn about this massive world "talking to ****** aliens" at length and learning more about them and the planets gives you XP and can drastically change the storyline?
To answer your question:
...And how do you know where to go? Theres nothing on my map????? Do they put an arrow up or something or do I have to walk around this huge world and hope I end up at the right spot?
Thanks
You learn where to go by "talking to ****** aliens". Seriously... The more you ask and get info, the more they will divulge and most of the time, you will get a waypoint on your map explaining where the next objective is.
It sounds like you expected one thing and got another with this game. I love this game, it is extremely involving, extremely interesting and makes me feel like im part of a Sci-Fi type world more than any other game Ive played in a very long time. It is the best combination of Western Style RPG\Sci-Fi Movie I could ever ask for.
Speaking of Story, I just finished the book. I recommend it if you likes the Mass Effect story.

In the pause menu, go to your journal. Under missions, it will tell you exactly where to go to move the story forward. You can get out of the citadel pretty quick if you skip the side stuff.
benjamin-benjami 12-12-07, 11:13 AM as long as we can ask questions.... Is COD4 about war or shooting people???
Getting to 1 million creds opens up the Spectre gear.
Do I need to go back to C-Sec req. officer to get the gear? I passed the million mark a while back but have not been back to the Citadel yet. Just curious, thanks.

I thought it was about a police action where there was collateral damage? :p

No, you should be able to buy it from the Normandy's Quartermaster as well.
I wish there was Spectre armour. Well, if it exists I didn't find it.
You guys need to understand that Derek isn't someone you'd call bright. It's no surprise that he wouldn't "get" or like this game.

Your journal tells you exactly where to go. Why do you think you where getting all those journal entry notices on the bottom right of the screen? They detail the world, place, person, etc. and what to do.

C-Sec Requisitions and Normandy quartermaster are the only sources. But they get regular refreshes after each mission so if you have the money, they have the gear and you can outfit the whole crew with it. Put on the right add-ons and you can take out turrets and Colossi with minimal effort, even with the handgun.

ahahahahahahaha!
ha! heh. oh, lordy.
can ANYthing scifi be produced these days without a 15 year old saying it ripped off Serenity? Jesus, people, science fiction existed before freaking Joss Whedon. I can't see anything in the story of Mass Effect that's anywhere close to the style or content of Firefly/Serenity.

Press start to read your Journal and Codex it tells you what assignments you have under your belt / waiting to be completed. Maybe you should read the instruction manual too!
RafaelSmith 12-12-07, 05:34 PM Anyone that thinks this game ripped off Firefly needs some serious help...the only similarity I can see is that it takes place in space and the characters use guns =P
Mass Effect is probably the best RPG i have played in a LONG time...and its production quality is top notch.
I can't see anything in the story of Mass Effect that's anywhere close to the style or content of Firefly/Serenity.Wrex kind of reminds me of Jayne Cobb, and Joker (Seth Green, a refugee of the Whedon-verse) kind of reminds me of Wash. But really, that's it... Mass Effect is otherwise really far removed from Firefly.
Rather than drawing from any one source, it's a real mish-mash; I recognize elements of 2001, Star Trek, Babylon 5, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, and even Space: Above & Beyond here and there, but I think this story resembles written sci-fi (notably David Brin) more than anything else. As they say, good artists borrow, great ones steal.

Sounds like KOTOR to me - one of the most boring games of all time. Exactly why I had ZERO interest in another snooze-fest.

Yeah, another cookie cutter FPS is all we need. You know, some people like an interesting story and good character development without just holding down the right trigger all day blowing everything away.
If you don't like ME,that's your opinion, but don't fault it for being a frickin' RPG!

Some people don't assume that's all people play that don't like boring RPGs. I spent 50 freakin hours on VIVA PINATA. and if you think all you have to do to be successful in today's FPS is hold down the right trigger all day then, wow...
SamuraiXmas 12-13-07, 02:35 PM I fault Mass Effect for not being KOTOR. That's on top of faulting it for having a broken cover system, a broken squad system, buggy textures that pop in and out, an insane difficulty for magic users (Game almost forces you to shoot), a broken market system (You can get all the gear for free by doing missions. Why buy it? It's pointless), cookie cutter planets (Other than the main story planets, they are all the same barren wasteland) etc etc. Having said all of that, it's the best RPG I've played since Oblivion. I know this isn't the Oblivion vs Mass Effect thread, but Oblivion had a currency system that mattered (with real unique items to buy), a TON more quests to do, and no broken squad system to drive you insane.
I did pay 70 dollars for ME though, so I'm supporting the status quo of Bioware games that always, always ship with some sort of bugs/frames per second problems/etc
Sounds like KOTOR to me - one of the most boring games of all time. Exactly why I had ZERO interest in another snooze-fest.
Thanks for your useless input.
AHDTVDiet 12-13-07, 03:03 PM You actually had to buy gear in Oblivion? Leveled loot almost ruined that game for me. It got to the point that every random bandit had soo much good stuff I couldnt carry it all and had to make two or three trips to get it. I had so much money and stuff I had bought every house and still didnt know what to do with it all.
EDIT: Not saying Mass effect is any better in the money control as I reached the achievement really easily since it is true that you find everything so no point in buying it.
stevesns69 12-13-07, 04:12 PM This game sounds like a choose your own adventure book from when I was like 10 years old. I think I'll pass on this one.

I know. Who wants to make decisions in a game? I found a great set of games where there are no choices. They are called movies, and you can play them right on your Xbox 360! As a purist, I object to tthe beginning of these games, where they ask if you want to "play movie" "special features" or "bonus materials". How do you "bonus materials" anyway? If I wanted to do that, wouldn't I have bought a bonus materaler instead of a movie? Anyway, after you get past that initial childish choosing, those games rock. I usually can beat them in less than 2 hours.

I meant at the lower levels/when you are still doing the main story etc. You are right that leveled drops turned the market system to rubbish, but by then you probably had all of the items that you could buy anyway (Each shop keeper only had 1, maybe 2 "Special" items). Mods quickly did away with that little problem though (atleast for the PC version).
woodface 12-13-07, 08:09 PM Not every RPG requires the amount of time investment in the story as this game does. Oblivion was much more action-oriented and much less dialog-intensive. While anyone playing Mass Effect should already have an idea of what they're in for, it's not necessarily typical of the RPGs out there.
Mass Effect takes quite a bit longer to get going than any RPG I've ever played. Some people like RPGs with a good story but not such a time-consuming one as in this game. If I were to try to complete this game it would take me a year with the amount I play games.
The Sapient 12-13-07, 10:23 PM I wouldn't say the story takes that long to get going. There are just a few hours of running around the Citadel at the beginning. That said, I don't have a problem with anyone not liking this sort of game. There are plenty of popular games that don't interest me.

Running around the citadel was probably the only fun I had in Mass Effect. Even so, most of the stuff you do in the citadel is of little or not consequence (For instance, save the doctor or don't, she's still there, and she's still selling you things). That's basically why I consider Oblivion to be superior; Because if you (for instance) do one of the assassin missions, then the guy/girl you assassinated is gone. There are actual consequences for your actions, which there really weren't in Mass Effect (except for the one big choice you get, not to spoil anything).
Oh well, it was fun while it lasted, but having done all of the citadel missions on my first run through, I don't think there is any replayability left for this game (Except for ridding planet XYZ of it's bandit encampment...boo) :D

Derekin, a challenge to you. You dont like Mass Effect, we can respect that. We dont have to have the same tastes.
You opened a thread on not liking it and now appear to be saying negative things simply to get a response from people. Understood. Pointless, but understood.
Now heres the challenge- List your top 5 Xbox 360 games you have enjoyed playing since purchasing your system. If you cant find 5 Xbox 360 games, maybe the 360 isnt for you?
The reason? Just interested. As other folks have noted, your post history is rather negative in general and it would be nice to hear something positive for a change.

You have to understand I love RPGS but ones where its a game. Like Final Fantasy. Theres nothing like that at all. This is an RPG/action game. Controlling the shooting, money is pointless everyone says its not like the good RPGS.
Hannzo24 12-14-07, 03:03 PM Derek...deep down you have to love this game. It has given you a reason to troll and argue on the internets....which you obviously do best.
Most games that I don't like I just don't play and I forget about them. *shrug*
You opened a thread on not liking it and now appear to be saying negative things simply to get a response from people. Understood. Pointless, but understood. Some people could be seen as malcontents whose goal it is to gripe a lot. Some folks are confused about the concept and AVS practice of using an existing thread to discuss a topic. Still others... fit into both of the above categories. Now, I get that folks aren't going to dig Mass Effect universally... but I figure when someone starts a thread and spends so much energy making the same complaints about the same games over and over and over, the best course of action is to enjoy watching the other users make fun of them. (So far, so good!)
chad473 12-14-07, 08:20 PM I wouldn't mind being a fly on the wall in this guy's gameroom. I just picture him cursing the TV for hours on end, because if you check out his post history he hates basically every game he mentions.
Well it seems that most people like this game, so I have just ordered it. I actually enjoy a good story, so I expect that I will be among the majority.
