Seems straight forward or straight backwards, towers are close to 180deg for north Dayton--south Cincinnati.
DB4, amp, attic or roof or? :confused::confused:

Your zip code would be a lot easier to work with. But if I read your text file correctly, you have at least 1 upper VHF digital station which makes the DB4 as poor choice. The Channel Master 4221 4 Bay is better for upper VHF than the DB4. The CM 4228 8 Bay is better than the CM 4221 for upper VHF, but is more directional.

I don't mind not getting the one vhf station, if I can get the others.

You are between the Cincinnati and Dayton markets. I plugged your zip code and an antenna height of 200' under options into antennaweb to get a more complete list of digital stations:

* yellow - uhf WBDT-DT 26.1 CW SPRINGFIELD OH 33° 15.1 18
* yellow - uhf WXIX-DT 19.1 FOX NEWPORT KY 202° 29.6 29
* yellow - uhf WPTD-DT 16.2 PBS DAYTON OH 34° 15.0 58
* yellow - uhf WPTO-DT 14.2 PBS OXFORD OH 269° 13.2 28
* yellow - uhf WRGT-DT 45.1 FOX DAYTON OH 33° 15.1 30
* yellow - uhf WKEF-DT 22.1 ABC DAYTON OH 33° 15.1 51
* yellow - uhf WLWT-DT 5.1 NBC CINCINNATI OH 199° 29.0 35
* yellow - uhf WCET-DT 48.1 PBS CINCINNATI OH 199° 29.0 34
* yellow - uhf WHIO-DT 7.1 CBS DAYTON OH 33° 15.8 41
* yellow - uhf WDTN-DT 2.1 NBC DAYTON OH 33° 14.7 50
* yellow - uhf WKRC-DT 12.1 CBS CINCINNATI OH 197° 29.3 31
* green - uhf WSTR-DT 64.1 MNT CINCINNATI OH 202° 24.0 33
* green - vhf WCPO-DT 9.1 ABC CINCINNATI OH 197° 28.7 10
* red - uhf WKOI-DT 39.1 TBN RICHMOND IN 269° 13.2 39

WCPO-DT ABC 9 is on VHF 10. WDTN-DT CBS 12 will be switching from UHF 31 to VHF 12 after the analog shutdown. All of the other stations in Dayton, Cincinnati, and the WXIX-DT Fox 19 station in KY will stay on UHF. So you will only need to cover VHF 10 to 13 and UHF, but for stations in almost opposite directions.

My advice is to get the Channel Master 4221 4 Bay bowtie. Aim it at the more distant Cincinnati stations as it should pick up the Dayton stations from the backside. I get stations out to 43 miles from the front side of a CM 4221 and several stations in the opposite direction out to 40+ miles as well. See http://www.hdtvprimer.com/ANTENNAS/comparing.html for info on the CM 4221.

The attic might work depending on the terrain and construction of the house. You can always try the attic first, but if you get dropouts or can't get all the stations, then move it to the roof. Attics have dead zones, so my solution was to mount the Cm 4221 to a flat piece of scrap wood that I could slide across the floor beams until I found a good spot for reception.

"Nitewatchman" on the Cincinnati area reception here on avsforum is also out of Middletown, and a PM to him with your street address might bring the most useful information. Seems to be an OTA near-genius.

FWIW, I'll tell you my experience in eastern Cinti (Anderson Tsnp). I get the VHF station using Ch. 10 and all the UHF stations very, very well in Cinti. and most of the time from Dayton with a Channel Master 4228 on a rotor mounted on top of my chimney. In Middletown you're in a good spot to get both markets as well as PBS from Oxford, if you're willing to use a rotor. I think solidsignal.com has a remote-control CM rotor on sale right now, too (I have to walk over to my control and turn it - boo hoo). Good luck!

Thanks afiggatt for the help, I was going to order the DB4 but sounds like CM4221 would be your choice. Guess what, I'm going to order the 4221.
My 14 year old 35in mits crt tv developed what I think is called vertical flip over or something like that (about 5in of scan lines on top with the display upside down).
Ordered 60in Kuro, came in Monday. Can't wait to get some HD on it. Do you know what resolution ota would be? 1080p>

tyromark, thanks also.

60 inch Pioneer Kuro. Very nice. Good luck with the CM 4221; be prepared to spend a while tweaking the aim and location if you go the attic route.

No one broadcasts 1080p. ABC, Fox, MNT are 720p (720/60p) networks; CBS, NBC, CW are 1080i (1080/60i). Most PBS stations are 1080i, but some have switched to 720p output using a cross converter for the 1080i material from PBS.

Sorry for jumping in late on this thread, but where does one find information about which DT stations are staying on UHF frequencies vs. moving to VHF after the analog shutdown? I looked on antennaweb but didn't see that info. Thanks.

Start here http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=823166 - I'd recommend reading the last 20 pages or so, then go back if you don't find your answer.

http://www.fcc.gov/dtv/. Look for the files - Word lists and Excel format spreadsheets - posted on August 6, 2007. The format is not that user friendly because it lists the Facility ID, state and city of record, and current NTSC channel, but not the call sign. But you can look up the facility ID at the FCC database at http://www.fcc.gov/mb/video/tvq.html.

There's a nearby station behind my CM4221 that I get nothing on with it, whereas it comes in fine with a rabbit ears. Mine is outside, though. I think you may be picking up the stations behind it via a reflection from inside your attic.

Our local cable company refuses to carry high definition programming. When the switchover happens I want to be able to watch some television even if I have to get an antenna. The antennae help sites have not been too helpful. My zip code is 71801. What kind of reception would I get, and what kind of equipment would I need?

On the DTV channel change thread, I uploaded a spreadsheet which includes the call signs and other info. Hopefully, this makes it a bit more user friendly.

Per the attached TV Fool plot for your ZIP Code, it appears that Shreveport will be the best direction to point your antenna. At this range, however, you will probably want to consider a larger, outdoor, antenna such as the Channel Master 4228 along with a good pre-amp.

The nearest PBS station, KETG, is on VHF 13 but the CM4228 may be able to handle it, even on an off angle. If not a separate VHF antenna may be needed if you want to receive this station.

Please note that you do not need to wait for the switchover. HD OTA signals are available now if you have an ATSC tuner in your TV or in a set top box.

Falcon 77,

Thank you.
