So my plasma will be arriving soon (Samsung 5884), and hopefully a 360 will be coming as a gift. I will definitely be playing on Live, and wanted some opinions on the optimum online connection setup. Currently, my cable modem is on the second floor, connected to a wireless router. My television has its own coaxial connection on the first floor. Ideally, I don't want to use the wireless setup for the 360 - extra $100, plus potential connection issues. So, I would like to have my cable modem very close to my television. At the same time, however, I don't want to degrade my HDTV signal or ISP connection. So, I ask, what is my best option here? Do I simply split the signal on the same outlet and expect to see no degredation? Do I consult with my cable company and have them run a second line next to the existing one? Or do I just purchase the wireless kit and call it a day? I'd like to hear some input - thanks a million!

see if your cable company will come out and "test" the line.... if its not split too many times you will have no problems splitting the connection but if it is split it can cause issues. your cable company can come out and test the signal strength.

the best bet will be to hook the cable modem up at the tv or run and ethernet wire from your current cable modems location to the xbox.

Ethernet over the power line is also a potential solution. Won't be any cheaper than wi-fi but will allow you to stay wired which is preferable and you won't have to move your modem.

I've never heard of this. Where can I find more info on this? Have you used it?

I'd just set up the cable modem and wireless router near the TV (with a coax splitter) and run the XBox wired to the router. I'm in the same situation as you, and that's how I ended up doing it.

I decided to run ethernet floor to floor, using the air cond. vents as a guide to where to come out. A pain, but I am happy with the result.

Okay, I called my cable company. They're planning on coming out next week to do line testing and possibly reconfiguring. Thanks for the replies.
