I like his "non tech" example:
For technophobes, the word also is familiar from the 1990 movie "Pretty Woman," in which Julia Roberts startles her date's upper-crust friends with a hearty "Woot, woot, woot!" at a polo match.
I guess the author isn't familiar with Eddie Murphy. (err: I mean Arsenio Hall, thanks Lake).

"w00t" comes from MMO games such as Ultima. It means "Wow! Loot!"

It's rare for monsters in MMO games to drop good weapons and items so when they actually did, gamers would type: "WOOT!"

"The demon lord is dead! Woot!"

The term ended up filtering down to almost every online game from then on and most players have no idea where it came from or what it means.

Now it's simply an expression of excitement.

thats actually different. Thats hwOO hwOO hwOO, something that sports fans have been doing in bars for ages.

then you have the oOt? oOT? oOt? sound that goes along with the ol' "ride the train dance"

w00t is just a gamer term... people have gotten them all confused. Unfortunately.

w00t? They're about 5 years too late. I haven't seen anyone use w00t in ages.

I am too busy laughing at the article that was linked in the story for "Microsoft shuts down Santa for talking dirty". I am crying laughing so hard.
