does anyone know how to shutdown the XBOX using the xbox DVD remote control ? it can be done using the xbox controller, but not the DVD remote controller. I know it involves modifying the xml file for keystrokes, but I need to know the action name for shutdown.

The process for shutting down is to to to the shutdown menu and select shutdown. I dont know any other way. If you look in the keystrokes.xml file you should be able to find the command for shutdown and bind it to something on your IR remote... (# keys are a good candidate).
I am assuming you are talking while running XBMC?

thanks Sean for the tip. Yes, I am talking about shutting down while running XBMC. I saw the shutdown menu action, but didn't know what it was for, thought that there will be a single action for shutdown.

You hit the power button on the remote. The 360 will turn off.

If you get the xbox media center extender kit with the media center remote, it has a power button that will turn off the xbox.

Sorry. I didn't know that. I've never owned an Xbox or a Playstation until this generation. And now I'm hooked since I have four 360's. I played Nintendo and PC games prior to this generation. And of course Atari back in the 70's.
I saw Xbox and was thinking it was the 360.

ahh.... so that answered the puzzle I had when I looked at the keystroke.html file. It had a button named "power" and I was wonder where on earth is the power button on the xbox DVD remote. I thought maybe there was a typo error in the file. That button was linked to the xbmc shutdown function, I've since assigned it to <one> on the DVD remote. Also had the subtitle function assigned to another key on the remote. I use the subtitle function quite a bit these days, must be the old age thing where one gets hard of hearing. Strange thing though, on some DVDs, Meet The Robinsons, the subtitle function doesn't work until I activated it through the DVD menu screen option. For others, it worked like a charm.

was thinking of that, but opening up the xbox to install it is going to be a challenge for me. Anyway, I got one of the DVD remote keys assigned to XBMC shutdown now. So everything is good. Unitll the couch potato gene in me wakes up and I'm too lazy to walk over to turn on the xbox, that's when I'll get the XIR. That could be soon I think, right after I get the portable toilet idea implemented.
