View Full Version : Xbox360, HDMI and Optical audio
Hi,
I am trying to hook my 360 up via HDMI for video and Optical for audio. I can't get both cables to physically fit, the official Xbox composite cable blocks the hdmi.
I am using the composite to get an optical output. If you are unfamiliar the official xbox composite adapter has a optical audio port on the connector.
I want HDMI as I understand that is the only way to get 1080P out of the xbox, is this correct?
I do not have a HDMI receiver so I need the digital optical audio to get 5.1 sound.
Any suggestions how I can get this to work?
Thanks
dogmanky 12-12-07, 02:12 PM I'll be gentle.. since you obviously are not familiar with the search feature. You need the MS adapter or there are several threads on how to make a small modifcation to the 360 to make both cables work without the adapter. The adapter ships with the Elite or can be purchased seperately.
You can get 1080p from component or VGA also depending on your display. Regualr DVDS will not upscale to 1080p however using the component cables.
:)
bkchurch 12-12-07, 02:13 PM There's two ways to do it: The expensive way, or the cheap way. The expensive way being forking over $50 for MS's overpriced HDMI/audio dongle combination. The cheap way is to gut your 360's component cable so it will fit at the same time as the HDMI cable, this is accomplished by snapping the outer plastic casing off and bending the metal connector upwards so the HDMI cable will fit. I opted for this method and am very happy I did.
Do a search on the forums and you'll find the thread explaining how to do it with some pictures of the final result.
TRALFAZ 12-12-07, 02:31 PM Pack all that stuff up, take it back and get an Elite. 120 gig HDD and it comes with the audio dongle you need. Very cost effective IMO. :D

If I could get it at costco I would, I have a lifetime warranty through costco on the 360, too good to pass up.....

Ok, I am thinking about going elite however I am not sure about the HDMI audio cable as I can't find a clean picture or description, will this cable allow for optical audio connectivity?
Slordak 12-12-07, 03:13 PM The Xbox 360 Elite includes a separate audio dongle which allows analog and digital optical audio to be transmitted out of the Xbox 360 at the same time as HDMI video, with no cable hacks or further purchases.

Just so you know...I was able to fit both in there at the same time :). I'm not proud of myself for doing it. I have to say...so far no problem (this is the Elite model)
