I know I'm posting this in a "flat panel" forum. :o
So I expect that the results will be skewed toward flat panel displays. :D

Please post your reason(s) for choosing one over the other.
Based on performance/value (this includes replacement bulbs).
Noise, picture size, setup problems, $$$, whatever!
Consider that either display technology will be used under light controlled conditions.
Thanks.

For the flat panel mount I'm figuring $300US (you can figure > or <).

To help out us non-projector people, here are two models with prices from Magnolia:

Mitsubishi - 3LCD Home Theater Projector Model: HC4900 Price: $2,299.99

Optoma - DMD DLP HD Home Theater Projector Model: HD80 Price: $2,699.98

I figure $600US for the fixed framed screen [100" or greater] (you can figure > or <) & $200US (you can figure > or <) for the ceiling mount. I know a flat panel display would also need cable. So the price here only reflects the difference of say < 3m for flat panel (typically) vs. > 5m for front projection (typically); I'm adding $200US for the additional length (you can figure > or <).

Enjoy & Happy New Year!

Personally for $4,000 I would do the following using our forum sponsors:

~$2,000 for a commercial 50" 1080p plasma
$800 to $1,300 720p projector
$400 to $700 dollars for an electric screen to drop down in front of the plasma
Cabling and duplex switch/splitter from Monoprice
Plasma and Projector mount

If you can stretch your budget by about $700 to $1,000 you could upgrade to a 1080p projector.
