I have a Samsung HLN 61(720p) series TV and bought another Sammy that displays 1080 p. I connected the 360 via VGA HD to the new Sammy 1080p, and got the message "mode not supported". I had the same set up on the 720p Sammy and was able to get picuture. I'm able to connect the new SAmmy via component with no issues, but i'd like to use the VGA. Any suggestion would be appreciated

Does your Sammy support the resolution via VGA. Just because it has a VGA port doesn't mean it supports 1080p.

shouldn't it still display the 720p signal even if it didn't support the 1080p signal?

Your current display setting on the Xbox 360 is not supported by your new TV. I know, it doesn't make sense, since your new TV is 1080p and you would assume it would support the lower resolution of your 720p set. I had the same problem.
Try resetting your video settings. You can find the link here:

thanks for the link! forgive the ignorant question: What is the "default" video setting?

Via VGA, the default is probably 640x480. In any case, don't assume that because your HDTV can handle a given resolution via one input method, that it can automatically do the same resolution with another. The set of resolutions available in VGA mode (and in fact supported by displays) is quite different than those via component.

If i reset the system to the default video settings(640x480), won't i have to switch to the composite cable in order to see an image? sorry if it sounds like a dumb question.

The Xbox should output from whatever you have plugged in.
Its not your xbox. Its a flaw in all of the hln series processors. Well not all but most. If you call samsung they will send a tech out to take a look. More than likely they will replace either the logic board or most cases the video processor. It is all done at no cost to you either :). If you have any other questions let me know.

i reset to default setting as properbostonian suggested and got it to display. thanks to all for their inputs. i must say i'm a little disappointed with the display out of the HD DVD. it's a much better picture than when i had it connected to the 720p sammy, but on some of the scenes (Transformers) there was some "snow" type effect on the dark scenes. i'll have to try calibrating again!
