TV: Toshiba 42HL167
Receiver: Yamaha RX-V2500
Equipment: PS3, Xbox360, Wii, Cable box, etc.

Right now, I have everything plugged into the TV... i.e. PS3 > TV via HDMI, Xbox360 > TV via Component, Wii > TV via Composite, Cable box > TV via composite.

My question is how to make this 5.1, if at all possible, with this receiver. Currently I have an Optical cable going from the TV Out to CBL/SAT In on the receiver. As of now, the PS3 is only detecting 2.1 because it's plugged directly into the TV via HDMI and TV only has 2.1 built-in. What I'm trying to do is for the PS3 to recognize 5.1. If I go to Audio Settings on the PS3, then Ouput > HDMI > Manual > it gives me a whole lost of boxes to check, but 2 are already pre-selected (both Linear 2.1). Now, say I check ALL the boxes on that selection, and go to the TV menu, under Audio Setup, I have 6 options. PC Audio (defaulted to "No"), HDMI Audio 1 ("Auto", other options are Digital and Analog), MTS ("Stereo", but is greyed out and unable to change), Language ("English", of course), Optical Output Format ("PCM", other option is Dolby Digital), and finally Dolby Digital Dynami Range Control ("Compressed", but is also greyed out and unable to change).
The receiver recognizes the new Optical Audio cable I put in for TV > Receiver (previously Analog), and even has the "PCM" icon on the far left side of the receiver display. My problem is, say I go to watch a movie that suppotrs 5.1 and ensure that 5.1 is enabled in the DVD Setup menu, I hear everything through all my speakers, but actual voices. I hear, for example; gunshots, cars, loud crashes, narrating, and other sound effects, BUT the actual audio of the movie. Now, say I bring up the in-movie options via the 'Triangle' button on the PS3 controller. There's 3 rows of options and there's one called "Audio Options". If set to "1" I get no dialog, but sound effects and the like coming out of all my speakers, but if I set it to "2" I get dialog coming out my 2 front speakers (maybe 3, because sounds like somewhat crappy sound effects coming out the center speaker) and no sound effects or anything coming out of the rest.

Is there something I am doing wrong? Is there an option I'm missing?
Please advise

Thanks for all the help in advance...

Now I'm not sure if I'm understanding you correctly but as far as I know if your ps3 is plugged into hdmi to the tv, it will lose the 5.1 coding through the tv to the receiver. Now in order to keep the 5.1 (this applies for xbox 360 as well) you would have to use an optical cable from your ps3 straight to the reciever
