it varies... sometimes i can start a hd movie 5 mins after buying and sometimes it takes 5 or 6 hours.

usually its much slower when a big demo was just put up or something like that which causes extra strain on the servers. recently its been slow thanks to the video marketplace going to canada and europe.

More. I started downloading Crocodile Dundee in mid 1987 and it's only at 91%.

I'm in Canada, and just last night I decided to browse all the newly arranged glorious tabs of downloads... Not impressed, MS, if you're going to put all these tabs there at least have some !@#$ to download on them, eh?

This is such a no-sale for me, even if they had Wanda Whips Wall Street for 99 cents I don't think I'd bite. But then call me crazy, I'm not dying to watch HD-DVDs on my game console either. I borrowed a friend's HD-DVD player and was totally unimpressed with it, glad I borrowed before buying.

I guess I'm a bit negative about the whole 360/video concept, but downloading over the course of hours is such a downer, I can do PPV on my cable box much easier.

At this rate you won't be done for another 2-3 years!

I didn't know this was that big of an issue anymore with downloading in the background and downloads continuing after you turn the 360 off. (shrug)

I've probably downloaded about 30 HD movies or so this year and I've never seen much of a slow down at all. Usually within 10-15 minutes tops I can start watching and I've never had one stop to re-buffer or anything like that. Usually the download completes a good 30 minutes or more before the movie is over.

I download HD offerings all the time without problem. On HD offerings however, i wouldn't start it right away when Microsoft allows you to. Wait another few minutes. I started an HD movie when Microsoft allowed and about 20 minutes into the movie I had caught up with the download and had to pause the movie for about 10 minutes to allow the DL to get back out in front.

I've always found it weird that some peoples downloads take forever. The only time I've had a problem with speed on XBL is when everyone is trying to dl the same thing at once ala the Bioshock demo.

There's more in play than just peoples speed. I'm willing to bet alot has to do with the location of the Live user.

I download quite a few movies from the XBL marketplace, and I haven't had any problems besides when the service first started. HD movies are ready to watch in 15-20 minutes, and standard def movies are ready in 10 minutes tops. At the very beginning it was horrendously slow for me, but after that first month I haven't had any problems.

I think it varies a lot by the time of the day and the popularity of what you're downloading. Sometimes I get DL stuff over Live at near what my cable connection will allow (~4mbs), and other times it takes hours to download anything. It wish they would just put a Kbps counter when you download something.

You were unimpressed by HD-DVD versus regular DVD !?! Is your tv properly calibrated lol?

What movies did you watch? Some HD-DVDs don't look a whole lot better than an upscaled DVD but the high quality ones should by all means make your jaw drop.

I downloaded the HD version of "The Greatest Game Ever Played" last week and it took over 12 hours to download it.

I don't think it is completely XBL's fault though, I believe my internet provider has started putting a bandwidth cap on application that use a lot of bandwidth (like XBL and p2p programs). I think it is a sad state of affairs in this country when internet providers assume that if you use a lot of bandwidth that you must be doing something illegal. They then try and slow you down so you get annoyed a stop using the service that you pay for. Sorry for the rant but I'm really PO'd at my IP right now for the bandwidth capping they are doing, either that or XBL is having a lot of problems since the update. I'm not sure which is the bigger culprit but, for now I'm blaming my IP.

One side note about the new tabs on XBLM, I hate that you can't search for movies by the studio that released them (or I haven't figured it out yet). What makes it even more puzzling is that you can search for TV shows by studio but not movies!?

In the last 2 weeks I've downloaded 2 movies. One each Friday at night. Both in HD. Hostel II take 5 minutes to be ready to play and I played it inmediately and ran with no hiccups.
Last Friday we rented Blades of Glory and it took like 20 minutes to be ready, and it also ran perfectly. I had some issues with Xbox Live, it wasn't showing my Ms points, and when I was trying to rent the movie it was showing different error messages. After 10 minutes trying it finally worked.

I noticed when you go to a movie it says video/movie rental. Do you get to keep the movies on your HD indefinately? Plus, I can't believe how quicky you can preview these movies without any hiccups. Microsoft really does own the internet!!
BTW, why do we Canadians get the shaft on content compared to those on the otherside of the 49?

The movies stay on your HD indefinitely, but the license is only for 14 days, or 24 hours after you push play the first time. That's why they are "rentals." You can watch it as much as you want in that 24 hours, but that's it.

For TV shows, I think they are yours forever, but I've never downloaded a show before.

I was wondering about why Canada is always behind us the other day. Maybe you guys have different copyright/property rights laws, and so all this DRM-ed stuff gets delayed. Didn't you guys have the same issue with iTunes, or am I imagining that? I seem to remember Canada getting iTunes a lot later than the US.

I've heard that the Canadian government requires that a large portion of content on a network be of Canadian origin?

If they consider internet delivered video to be under this act, then MS has to negotiate with new Canadian companies for the right to distribute their material on Marketplace.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_in_Canada#The_business_and_regulation_of_televisi on

Among other regulations, all Canadian broadcasters and distributors must be at least two-thirds owned and controlled by Canadian citizens; also, all conventional stations, and most established specialty services, are required to air a majority of Canadian content, both throughout its schedule and in its primetime schedule.
