I need another HD receiver for my Directv system and was considering looking on ebay. I already have the newest HD DVR from them, but don't really want to spent another $299 to get a second one. Will the old Tivo units work with the newer dishes and channel offerings? What if I want to go with an older non-dvr unit, will they work.

To get all the current HD, you'll need an H20 or H21 for a regular receiver. For HD DVR, HR20 or HR21.

Anything else will not get all the HD channels.
