Given the fact that these subs are same price, same size, and not too far off on specs...how much better is the ED? The ED sub seems all the rage on the forums. The velodyne offers a remote control which is suprisingly attractive to me as it allows quick nighttime adjustments when the kids are in bed.

What exactly am I giving up in actual performance if I go with the entry level velo versus the ED?

The eD sub will go into the mid teens, where the Velo is about a 25 Hz sub ... on the other hand, the Velo, as you mentioned, has the remote, and is likely going to be considered to be more attractive in most home environements.

If you like the Velo, don't let "all the rage" talk you out of it - it is a good subwoofer.

I was debating between those subs also. The Velodyne I was able to get at cost but I winded up ordering the ED A5-350 after lots of research...

I really appreciate the feedback. What finally pushed you over the edge to the ED? I am not opposed to the look and I would like to support a local company (i live in iowa)...but I am really confused as to how much real world difference the teens make in now low the sub can go.

I was able to audition a velo 4000. It seemed at times to be a little "muddy" despite being plenty powerful and loud. Would that be caused by struggling to hit lower levels?

I want that performance on the ED to be noticeably better to justify giving up the instant tweaks you get with night modes, different sound characteristics on the velo. If it is noticeably better I can get off my butt and turn a dial.

Well after a lot of thread searching I found out the Velodyne cabinent is very cheaply built, by that I mean they did not double up on the MDF anywhere and there is not much bracing. Also the pics of the driver and magnet do not look very impressive. A big reason is that I found alot of threads about the amp going bad on the unit anywhere from 9 months to 2 years. I believe Velodynes warranty covers it for a few years but it just seems to be a large decent but cheaply built subwoofer. It is part of there budget line of subs. The ED construction is top notch compared to the DLS5000R. They double up on MDF and put alot of thought into internal bracing. There subs specs are better and the speaker even looks alot beefier. The ED weighs in at about 130lb where the Vel is about 80lbs.

Not to mention the excellent reviews provided by buyers of ED's sub and also craigsub's extensive testing.

I am not bashing the Velodyne just providing the reasons that made me make up my mind. I am not a audiofile but I do own my own AV company. I still use Velodyne subs for the majority of my customers installations with excellent results. I have not used the DLS line tho and have not had the chance to listen to the DLS500R.

Thank you...that really does help point out the differences that dont show up on a spec sheet. I appreciate it!
