View Full Version : Sony's DMX-NV1
jsmiddleton4 12-16-07, 08:59 PM I have a new Sony rear projection TV that has th ability to use the internet connection device the DMX-NV1. I've been reading about it and have a question. I'm not being a wise guy, honest. But why? Why would we want this device?
If I want to watch internet video I can connect my wireless laptop directly to the TV and use my laptop.
What am I missing?
Does someone have this device that can illustrate how you use it? I have network access and if the thing actually makes sense I could easily connect my TV to the internet. And it looks like doing so would be kinda cool and all. But it has to provide something I can't already do.
Jim
Don't forget, Sony also owns a movie studio. I suspect sometime in the not too distant future, they plan to stream their movies directly to your home, bypassing all the middlemen (e.g., AMC, Blockbuster, Amazon) and keeping all of the money for themselves.
jsmiddleton4 12-17-07, 12:44 AM Well that would be nice but still not sure why you would need this network device. Like I said using a laptop or a HTPC that is connected to the web would do the same.
mmihalik 12-17-07, 06:33 PM I've been following this for quite some time, but there is very little real info about this. Let me tell you my thoughts, and what I have discovered so far:
this is one of many Sony attempts at provided some form of media connect box. the original was the RoomLink, which permitted connection between a Sony VAIO computer and your TV, well before Microsoft's Windows XP Media Center PCs and Media Connect boxes. At the time, many Sony VAIO computers had built-in TV tuners with record capability, and the RoomLink device, when connected to your TV and your home network, would permit viewing recorded video, viewing pictures from your photo library, and listening to your music from your music library. Initially with a hard-wired LAN, then eventually to WiFi, but in the 802.11a band for better thruput. All SD.
Fast forward thru Windows XP Media Center, and now Vista Home Premium, with Xbox 360 for viewing media; still rocket science to mostpeople, but better than the original Sony Roomink device. Sony eventually updated some of the RoomLink devices for Windows Media Connect compatibility, in addition to the proprietary Sony VAIO methods.
What is supposed to happen with the DMX-NV1 device is integration into the Sony TV remote control, and the Media bar that is prevalent in the current Sony TV models; quite similar to the navigation menu bar on the PSP and the PS3.
The DMX has several required connections: one USB connection to the TV, so that remote control codes can be passed from the TV to the DMX; and HDMI connection and pass-thru for the video/audio; a network connection.
At some point, Sony is supposed to have (may have already) an internet portal that will provide viewers with VOD over the internet - movies, videos, and other content.
The box REQUIRES a compatible Sony TV. If you have an older Sony without the required USB connection, or any other brand TV, the DMX is NOT for you.
So, is there any "there" there?
Not from what I can see.
At the local Fry's, I ran into a Sony rep - only thing he could show me was the canned demo Sony is providing to the dealer. No live connection to the Internet, so could not really see what service was actually live.
We have a local Sonystyle store, and I found the same setup there - no live connection to the internet, so could only see the canned demo. I suggested that it would be a good idea to connect the device to the internet, espeically since they have that connectivity for other devices in the store...
I have a google alert setup for any sotries or blog entries for the DMX; other than alerts whenever there is some sales prootion, no real reviews or user experiences have been uncovered.
So for now, who is going to jump in and see Sony't latest attempt?
The box is well made like most Sony products, but I think this will be yet again another orphan like the Sony RoomLink, or their LocationFree boxes.
So for now, no reason to purchase, unless you can confirm the capabilities with a live demo. I think it actually does less than Apple's Apple TV, and that's not very much!
I've played with home video server with various NAS, Xbox 360, and PS3. Intilly the Sony showed some promise, but I don't thinkit is ready for prime-time just yet. Lurkers, correct my perceptions is wrong...
If you go to the Sony support site, you'll find training tutorials and the manuals.

But just as mmihalik has stated there is very little real user info on this unit.
and no hands on reviews from any on the online electronic reviewers like gizmodo, engadget, cnet etc...
The thing I would like best about this unit its ability to show a TV schedule since I only pick up all my content OTA and since my Sony KDS-60A3000 does not have a 7 day guide (which it should) this is what I would use it mostly for.
if you do decide to take the first plung please post your review.
mmihalik 02-16-08, 03:20 PM I finally saw this live at the Sony booth at CES last month.
Content: very limited as supplied by Sony
Resolution: though HD capable, no HD content provided by Sony over the dedicated Sony website
View content from local server: evidently not capable
So...my conclusion after playing with the actual unit with a live Internet connection?
- an expensive box for what it does
- for the same money, get an Xbox or PS3; you'll be much happier
- perhaps Sony may do more in the future, but for right now, it doesn't do anything useful
Sony has had similar devices over the years, and has simply never really pushed them very hard. Each generation obsoletes the previous. I have the original RoomLink that started Sony down this path. While it works, it really was never supported well by Sony.
I'd wait for future developments before taking a leap and buying this. Also, very important: due to the integration with the Bravia media bar and the USB connection, it will NOT work as a standalone device with any other TV.

Since the other cross-post was in the "HDTV Reception Hardware" forum, I think this might be more relevant here, and make the DMX-NV1 a more possible purchase:

New for BIVL, 3 providers added: Singing Fool; Video Detective; FearNet :)
anybody tray this, looks interesting, i look forward for improvement.:)
send2mytv :) dev.internet.sony.tv/extensions/send2mytv :)
Send2MyTV adds a context menu item to Windows/IE Explorer. Right click on
a file/Link in Windows Explorer/IE and the Menubar that pops up now has a
"Send2MyTV" link. If you select it, the File location shall be
converted to a usable URL and sent to the TV.
If you have not configured Send2MyTV earlier, it shall ask you for configuration
the first time you do "Send2MyTV". The settings are (all of these are mandatory) -
1. TV IP -> IP Address of the TV
2. TV Port -> Port Number on TV to connect to (default is 9784)
3. Map Local Directory & Local Webserver Directory
In order for Send2MyTV to convert the File location to a URL usable by
the TV, you need to do the following -
a) Install Apachefriends XAMPP (or any other HTTP server) on your local machine
b) Configure Apache/HTTP Server to export e.g D:\ as /d_drive (for XAMPP edit apache\conf\httpd.conf file)
i) To do this in Add the following lines in the <Directory> section
<Directory "D:/">
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks Includes ExecCGI
AllowOverride None
Order allow,deny
Allow from all
</Directory>
ii) Add the following line to the list of aliases
Alias /d_drv/ "D:/"
iii) Restart Apache
c)Enter "D:\" in Map Local Directory and "/d_drive/" in Local Webserver Directory
Its all set to Go now !!!
Try the Send2MyTV Firefox extension to send internet links from Firefox to the TV
tl;dr version: Installing a webserver on a local machine on your network appears to let you serve up local videos to the DMX-NV1.
Could anyone with this device try a few different codecs? The posting says "AVC/MPEG/WMV" so DivX appears to be out of the question, and I wouldn't count on the popular Matroska (MKV) container being supported - but remuxed into an .MP4 container might work.
I'm still not "$300 interested" but this would sure make me "$100 on eBay interested" in this device. I'm sure not going to pay 75% the cost of a PS3 for 7.5% of the functionality. :D
drballard33 01-18-09, 02:44 PM I hate to revive an old thread but I have been looking into this. I have the full Sony setup (52"LCD, Blu Ray player, 7.1 Receiver etc) and I want to enable the BD Live using my wireless signal. everywhere I look everyone tells me to get a simple internet bridge to do this, but no I am wondering if the DMX-NV1 will do this...anyone know?

Since no one else has answered, I'll take a stab. Disclaimer: I do not own this device.
No. The DMX-NV1 will not help you here. It's purpose is to stream content directly to your TV. Your BD player probably won't even recognize it.
If your player has an ethernet port, connect it to the internet via your router. For BD-Live, a wireless connections should suffice (though I recommend cable whenever feasible). You'll need a game adapter or the aforementioned bridge.

I own this device and I second the above explanation. The BIVL is almost completely a walled garden of a system. The channels besides YouTube and Amazon have anywhere from 16 to a few hundred videos available for viewing. Earlier this year, the CBS channel had full-length episodes of some series, but that seems to have been discontinued. Now all that remains on the CBS channel are a few hundred clips of shows on their network.
The YouTube channel on the BIVL can access almost anything on YouTube, but the search interface to get to specific clips is cumbersome.
The Amazon channel can access all of the same pay-to-rent VOD clips that are available on the Roku box.
There is a browser plugin that enables the user to push video links from a Firefox 2.x (not 3.x) browser on the same LAN/subnet. In my experience, video links that will actually play on the BIVL are few and far between. It doesn't allow you to push RSS video feeds to the box. It doesn't support all streaming protocols.
There are elements of a really cool product here, but since the only messages Sony has sent to users of the box were dated 2007 and 2008, it appears that Sony has lost interest in updating the BIVL to work with the tools of 2009 and beyond. :(

I totally agree with everything you just said and it does appear that Sony hasn't done much with the device but on the bright side BIVL is now integrated with the Bravia XBR9's!
So that's my one glimmer of hope. If they are including it in their 09 top of the line models then maybe they'll put out some updates.
MorganB 07-11-09, 05:54 PM Looks like Sony has inked a deal with Netflix to add their service to the DMX.
BarsAntone 07-13-09, 11:00 AM Looks like Sony has inked a deal with Netflix to add their service to the DMX.That's terrific news. I was just thinking the other day that if the Amazon service works on the BIVL, the Netflix service should too, since they both work on the Roku box.
The article I found in a news search (http://news.idg.no/cw/art.cfm?id=615BE9C1-1A64-6A71-CE42AFB7FFB32EE8) lists the other new content partners, too.
In addition to the Netflix partnership, Sony announced it was adding content from Demand Media (which includes Golflink.com, Livestrong.com, and eHow.com) and from ON Networks(Golf Tips, Play Value, and Beautiful Places). These new partners are already showing up on the box. Another article I found (http://www.reuters.com/article/filmNews/idUSTRE5690V820090710) indicates that we'll see the Netflix capability added "in the fall."
MorganB 07-17-09, 11:16 PM Well I took the bait with the promise of Netflix and bought one. Does anyone know if Amazon VOD streams 5.1? I have the optical out from the back of my tv hooked up to my receiver but did not get 5.1 on the sample HD movie.

No streaming is only in stereo. To get 5.1, you'll need to actually download the video which requires a PC or a TiVo Series 3 DVR.
BTW in case any one is interested, I updated the Firefox PC to TV add-on to work in Firefox 3.5 (it was fairly simple). It's a pretty useless add-on though since it only let's you "add" individual videos, not feeds.
Speaking of which, is there any other way to get videos into the "My Video Links" channel on this thing?
The manual says to use the "Save this link" menu item under the Options menu, when over a video thumbnail. The problem is there is no "Save this link" menu entry.
Netflix is now showing up in the video list. It just says coming in fall though.
rlowell 07-25-09, 12:42 AM I believe Sony already has some content webpages that it directs you to of "free" content that you can watch on the Brahvia Intenet Video Link. This, in addition to the Amazon unbox service, is all I know that it supports for now. I saw this free content demoed about a year ago at a Sony engineering facility.

AFAIK, the browser plugin is the only way to add links. I've found that there are a maddeningly small number of protocols supported in the "my links" area. What I'd really like to be able to add is links to RSS feeds.
I'm impressed that you updated that plugin. Even if you share it here, you should give (or sell) your version to Sony.

It basically is Sony's add-on with some minor changes to get it to work in Firefox 3.5. If I were writing it from scratch, I'd rewrite the whole thing since it looks like it was hastily thrown together. It would be cool if it could scan the page for all videos and then bring up up a list that you could then choose what video you want to add. The way it works now you can technically add any link on the page, 99.9% of which won't play.
BTW the addon isn't the only way of adding links to the Bravia, there is a hidden web site which let's you add links. See post 20 in this thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=12251918#post12251918) and it's followup post 24.

BAH! I remain mystified as to why content providers think people care about HD image but not sound. Most annoying.
BAH! I remain mystified as to why content providers think people care about HD image but not sound. Most annoying.
The major problem is that all movie/tv providers use WMV for streaming since it allows the use of DRM. WMV doesn't support AC3 or DD+ audio and WMA doesn't support 5.1 audio so providers are stuck with stereo.
Here's what Netflix had to say about this (http://blog.netflix.com/2008/11/encoding-for-streaming.html):
Today, we cannot use WMDRM to deliver AC3 or DD+ audio, which means that only stereo (delivered via WMA) is available. PCs and Macs decode the WMA, and CE players also transcode to PCM for digital connections to receivers. We could technically include multichannel audio using WMAPro, but essentially no receivers are actually capable of decoding that. We are working on solutions to deliver multichannel audio for all the streams where we have suitable source, but this won't happen in 2008 for sure.
The other part of the problem is that the way the DMX-NV1 is set up there's no way to actually decode the 5.1 sound. The DMX-NV1's HDMI cable is designed to plug directly into the TV as such there's no way to get 5.1 sound even if it was provided since the audio out from the TV won't pass 5.1 from the HDMI ports (only from the internal tuner)
You could run the HDMI cable from the NV1 to a receiver and then back to the TV I suppose, but that's not the way it was designed to be hooked up.
BarsAntone 07-29-09, 12:47 PM BTW the addon isn't the only way of adding links to the Bravia, there is a hidden web site which let's you add links. See post 20 in this thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=12251918#post12251918) and it's followup post 24.
Thanks for pointing that out. That's a much better solution than the plugin, so I've bookmarked my custom link. It's crazy that Sony created this and didn't bother to share it with BIVL owners.
I only bought this recently, but I've noticed that it sometimes reboots itself for no reason. It seems to get sluggish before it does this.
Has anyone else seen this?
xxRAZRxx 08-07-09, 07:02 PM I last called Sony about an update for my TV (46w4100) last week. During the conversation I asked about the ability to stream directly (no TVersity) from a PC with the BIVL. I was told that they were working on an update for this fall.
There's now an menu item under Video that allows searching for videos. It searches all videos except Amazon and YouTube.
There's also an activation menu under Network, which allows easier activation.
Finally the http://internet.sony.tv site has been updated.

There's also an activation menu under Network, which allows easier activation. It's confusing that this new activation menu appears on devices that have already been activated. I've clicked that menu choice a few times either inadvertently or on purpose to try to get it to do something on my activated box and it just hangs.
I wish Sony and/or Netflix would hurry up with whatever needs to happen to get Netflix working on the BIVL. It's Fall 2009 now, we're tired of waiting! :D
Is there a way to get to Hulu thru the DMX-NV1?
Is there a way to get to Hulu thru the DMX-NV1?
No.
Kramark 10-25-09, 09:09 PM After researching this for about an hour I think the best and easiest way to get internet content to a Sony TV is to just subscribe to the Xbox 360 Live Gold service which also supports Netflix now.

If you're giving it away sure. If not maybe. :)

Some of my titles have the HD logo by them when I look at the instant queue through the DMX-NV1. I played one and wasnt blown away by the picture. Will have to play with it more however to see if it is just showing the logo or if it is actually "HD".
Update: There does appear to be a difference between the HD an non HD content. I can remove the zoom on the image with the left right arrows on my remote on non HD content but HD content does not respond to those keys. Image quality leaves alot to be desired . I certainly wouldn't label the HD content as anything close to HD. The HD content on my AppleTV is far superior ( although still not HD IMHO).
BarsAntone 11-19-09, 11:19 AM Netflix went online in the DMX-NV1 (BIVL) last week! It's a nice addition. With over 300 titles in my instant queue, it's a little cumbersome to slog through the list 24 at a time, but it works.
Also, Sony will be offering a (free?) stream on the BIVL of its movie "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" between Thanksgiving and New Years Day. This is being offered before the DVD is released. A nice perq for us early adopters. :)
There's been an addition in the audio section on the BIVL. In addition to Slacker, the list of audio content now includes access to hundreds of NPR podcasts.
I saw a post on the Netflix blog that it's now live on Sony TVs. When I checked a few days ago, it still said "Coming in November".
The post said it required a software update. Was a firmware update required?

The software update was automatic.......happened overnight on the 14th of November.
Well I have it, but I suspended Netflix due to no time to watch it.
Any rumors as to whether DLNA functionality will be added to the DMX-NV1 and other Bravia TVs? I've read that some of the newer Sony Bravia TVs have support DLNA however it doesn't appear to be a feature of the DMX-NV1. I'd love to be able to stream video and pictures from my PC to the TV.

I just started my free trial with Netflix and watched a movie and a black and white tv show(Dick VanDyke Show) and I have to say I was impressed with the quality. While I really don't think it's HD, it still looks really, really good on my Sony 46XBR8 television.:) It certainly looks better than my crappy cable feed.

It is HD (720p), but the bitrate is only 3.5 mbps which is lower than cable TV HD bitrates. Netflix uses VC-1 encoding though which is better than the MPEG-2 encoding used by cable plus Netflix tweaks their encodings so the video ends up looking pretty good.
I compared the Netflix HD quality between the Sony DMX-NV1, my TiVo and the Sony PS3 (with Netflix disk) and the quality is pretty much identical. The differences are in the interface. The DMX-NV1 lacks the TiVo and PS3's search feature where when you rewind or fast forward it shows still frames of the current spot in the playback stream. This makes finding things when fast forwarding or rewinding a lot easier. Also the DMX-NV1's interface is extremely sluggish.
Still if you are simply watching a Netflix video, it works very well. It might even be my first choice over the TiVo and PS3 considering the TiVo has an issue that can cause it to lock up during Netflix playback and the PS3 requires inserting a disk.

What kind of bitrates are people getting on there BIVL? HOw does it compare to the Roku box and PS3?
manichols 12-30-09, 10:31 AM Hey guys thanks for all of the interesting information. I enjoy reading all of the technical stuff even if I don't quite understand it all. Keep contributing and I will keep reading.
Regarding Netflix vs Amazon. Netflix and Amazon both use 720p HD though Netflix is only in stereo while Amazon has 5.1 audio. Based on the bitrates below, Netflix has better video quality, while Amazon has better audio quality (though I don't think the NV1 supports 5.1 audio as other devices like TiVo or Roku do).
Available bandwith is the key though since both Netflix and Amazon will lower the video quality if the bandwidth isn't there.
If you are curious about Netflix's encoding, Netflix posted a lot of detailed information on their blog (http://blog.netflix.com/2008/11/encoding-for-streaming.html) about a year ago. Netflix has 3 SD encoding levels (375, 500, 1000, and 1500 kbps) and 2 HD encoding levels (2.6 mbps and 3.8 mbps). So if you want the highest HD level from Netflix you need to be able to have at least a 3.8 mbps sustained download speed (I was wrong about 3.5).
Amazon's doesn't detail their encoding specifics, but the individual shows list their encoded bitrates on their web site (http://www.amazon.com/b/?&node=16261631) for individual shows. Simply click on a show and then scroll down to the "Video Format Details" info. TV shows are streamed at 720p HD 5.1 audio with bitrates of 300 Kbps, 600 Kbps 480p, 900 Kbps 480p, 1.2 Mbps 480p or 2.5 Mbps 720p HD. Details about movies in HD aren't listed, but Amazon's help page says that they are also 2.5 Mbps 720p HD (though it says a 3.5 mbps connection or higher is required).
We just got an xb9 that comes with these features and they are pretty nice. I already have Netflix streaming on both my sets (this one plus an xbr4) otherwise I would be thrilled. The feature that I assume they don't have on this "plug-in" DMX-NV1 (vs. the built-in version of the xbr9) is the TV Guide, which I love since I actually use over-the-air broadcast instead on cable/satellite. Does anyone know if this feature exists for the DMX-NV1?
PS my general thought is that these features are expanding and this tool allows for the future integration/convergence of internet/tv (to a point). I watch most of my tv shows on Netflix streaming now, and half my movies.
The NV1 does not have a TV guide nor does it have any overlayed widgets (does the XBR9 have that?)
The NV1's interface is also extremely sluggish and it takes a long time for the screen up update. Once streaming actually starts things are okay, but navigating to choose what you want to play is painful. Is the XBR9's interface quick?
The main downsize of the NV1 and I presume the XBR9 is that neither can do 5.1 audio. Only Amazon supports that currently, but it's still a negative considering the cheaper (and faster) Roku box can do it.

Thanks, Morac!
The xbr9 overlays the widgets, which is nice. The TVGOS is also nicely done, responsive, and overlaid. The internet "channels" aren't the fastest in the world, but they are much better than what you describe for the NV1. I can say that in a direct comparison to my 2 Samsung Netflix streaming players that the xbr9 is a tad faster in previewing the movie list and has a better interface. I can't actually watch Netflix with the xbr's streaming though, because there's some glitch and right when it's supposed to start playing it actually restarts/reboots my set! I just got it last night so I have yet to dig into this further. I suspect a network issue.

The Roku receives 5.1? Does it do that for Netflix? I thought the codec used by Netflix (and others) didn't allow for multichannel. This would be welcome news.

Netflix doesn't support 5.1 though they say they want to. Certain Amazon HD titles have 5.1 audio. According to this thread (http://forums.roku.com/viewtopic.php?t=25144) over at the Roku forums, Roku does support 5.1 for Amazon HD.
I'll mention that the NV1 is slow, but it is usable. It's just painfully slow compared to every other Netflix compatible device I've used (TiVo, PS3, etc).
manichols 01-07-10, 10:33 PM We just got an xb9 that comes with these features and they are pretty nice.
I have the xbr8 which utilizes the DMX-NV1, and no it does not use the tv guide feature. But the tv itself uses the tv guide feature. It is part of the tv, not the video streaming device. I had the xbr9 for a couple days(I didn't like it and returned it for the xbr8)and to my knowledge the tv guide and internet streaming are two separate features on this tv too that do not work together with each other but are two nice features that Sony integrated into their top of the line tv's.
Can anyone actually get Amazon to stream in HD? I used to be able to get this, but now it's always streams at around 703x363 resolution with a 1.4 bit rate. No matter what HD video I choose that's the best I can get. For whatever reason Amazon doesn't think I have a fast enough connection for HD despite having a 12 mbps connection. This is extremely odd because Amazon's test HD video works with issues and Netflix streams in HD. Also Amazon HD works on my laptop.
Can someone test this? There's a bunch of free HD clips on Amazon. For example the Caprica preview (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0031UW0PO/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=digital-video&qid=1263153985&sr=1-5)
I have been using the NV1 with a wireless router on my 46XBR8. I have downloaded several HD movies from Amazon with it. Very easy and fast. Latest one was Sherlock Holmes. The sound is another issue. I use the TV sound. The NV1 says my audio system is not equipped for the sound output of the movie. So I use the TV speakers. I am sure that is true because it is an old Bose system connected to my TiVo output via Toslink.
The only problem I have had recently is the Yahoo ? weather does not display when I press the DMex button on the remote. The traffic and news reports are there as normal but the weather that was there when I installed the NV1 is no longer there?? It either says "updating" forever or "not available".
Anyone else having this problem?
I had a problem with Yahoo Weather if I linked to Yahoo on Sony's web site (https://internet.sony.tv/customer/template/ContentAffil.vm?lang=en&country=US). When I removed the link, weather works fine. I'm not sure why there is even a Yahoo link since it doesn't matter if it's linked or not.
My main problem with the NV1 is that I can't get Amazon videos to actually stream in HD. The speed test apparently fails so all HD videos revert to SD. I used to be able to stream HD, but since the update in November it's worked only once.
Netflix works fine in HD.
Thanks for your response.
Are you connected by wire or wirelessly?
I found the link you were speaking of. I will try turning it off.
BarsAntone 05-21-10, 12:51 PM The mention of Sony at this week's Google TV announcement made me wonder if Google TV will become a content provider on the BIVL or if the BIVL will be abandoned in favor of this completely new initiative.

BIVL has been abandoned for some time as far as development goes. It was just a way for Sony to test the waters for the integrated services by appearing competitive in offering a separate device to those who got their HDTV during the boom period before the integrated stuff came along. I imagine they could roll something over to it at some point but I think it's more likely they will just let it be since their new Blu-Ray players all have the same capabilities as the BIVL device and more.

The first time I tried, I found the links but not any more. Logging in takes me to the standard Sony account screen. Can you still find the links?

It's still there, it's just that Sony converted the site over to be part of their "ESSENTIALS" services. You need a Sony Essentials account now to access the site. There should be a way of linking your old account and the ESSENTIALS site together. I forgot how I did it though.
Here's the direct link, but it probably won't let you to it without logging in:
https://internet.sony.tv/customer/template/ContentAffil.vm?lang=en&country=US
Yes, I can login without a problem but it takes me to another login screen for my account?!?!
I even tried re-registering for the essentials but ended up at the same place.
You need to merge your Essential and old Sony.TV accounts. I don't remember it being that hard to do. If you are having problems, make sure your browser isn't blocking 3rd party cookies.
BarsAntone 06-16-10, 01:25 PM I noticed this week that a new Internet Channel from FIFA has appeared on the BIVL. Just in time for the World Cup.
TLoewenberg 06-27-10, 09:42 PM A major retailer (quasi partner with K-Mart) is closing out their NV1 for $40. Picked one up today and feed it over powerline ethernet to my 52XBR4. Netflix setup was quick and painless. Some of the content suffers from too much compression (?) and the buffering can be a little slow but otherwise for the money, can't beat with a stick.
It works okay for the most part, but it's not great. The biggest issue i have with it besides the sluggish interface is that it refuses to stream Amazon in HD. It used too do so, but hasn't since the 1.2.5 software upgrade.
I'm fairly certain this is caused by it reporting the wrong speed during the Amazon speed test so Amazon chooses the SD stream instead.
Netflix does work in HD.
corrado85 07-06-10, 06:07 PM Is still worth getting it? With new Upgrades, do you now receive facebook, pandora capability?

No it doesn't get any of that.
I'm beginning to think it was never worth getting. You'd be better off with a Roku box.
I just purchased one of these off eBay for about $40 to use with my 40Z4100S. The main draw for me was that I would be able to integrate Netflix into my TV's functionality without having to turn on another component. It accomplishes this goal very nicely.
However, it is indeed a clunky piece of equipment. Once the stream starts it's fine, but the interface is very slow and lacks features. I don't understand why the interface is so terribly slow, as it is obviously just a custom web browser for the TV. It should be much lighter on its feet than it is. It obviously has enough processing power to stream in HD, so why is it tripping up over the browser? Sony needs better coders.
Comparing the NV1 to the Netflix disc for the Wii, which I was using before I got the NV1, it has far less capability. I can only view Netflix titles that are already in my instant queue on the NV1, whereas with the Wii I could search genres as well as view the "Movies you'll love" section (or whatever it's called). The Wii beats it hands down on the interface, but of course lacks HD, and using it means I have to boot up the Wii, get out a Wii-mote, start the Netflix app, etc. So even with the slower interface, the NV1 is still a faster way to go.
I'll probably end up replacing the NV1 with a Sony Internet-enabled Blu-Ray player down the road some time, but I'm not too thrilled about having to turn on another component and wait for the Blu-Ray player to boot up in order to start watching my Netflix. I really like how the NV1 integrates into my TV's XMB.
In summary, I had great hopes for the NV1. The concept had great potential, but every time I use it I am woefully reminded of what the device could have been, which is in stark contrast to what it is.
Does anyone know if any of the network Blu-Ray players integrate into the TV's XMB like the BIVL does? I assume that would require a DMEx USB connection, but I would like to be wrong.
MorganB 09-03-10, 11:54 PM I just noticed that Hulu Plus is now listed as coming "this fall" in my media options. Glad to see Sony is still upgrading the device!
My BIVL just died (power light off), a little over 14 months after I got it. Of course Sony's warranty is only for a year, so it died just 2 months out of warranty.
I called Sony and they couldn't tell me how much it would cost to repair it. I'll have to call the repair center in Texas on Monday to find out.
I'm not sure it pays to repair it. I doubt the repair cost will be less than the cost for a new one (around $120). Also since I picked up a Roku box, I haven't used the BIVL since the Roku is so much faster.
In hindsight I never would have bought the BIVL in the first place.

I just bought one "new and sealed" from eBay for $66, free shipping. It should be here in a couple of days. The listing indicated the seller had 10 in stock. I'll let you know how that goes. It may be cheaper than repair.

Assuming it truly is "mint", is there a way to get a copy of the OS currently on the BIVL (and reload it later) before I connect it up and it updates?
Can I get another image after it updates?
My BIVL just died (power light off), . . .
Just thought of something: Did you check to see if the power adaptor brick thingy is working?

Yes, I used a volt meter and it was outputting the proper voltage.
Well, hulu plus is now working, but I haven't subscribed. I don't like the functionality, yet. Hopefully they will fix a few bugs.
I looked at one of the preview programs (Cosmos). Firstly, my internet connection isn't the best (2 Mb/s download). It works great for standard definition programs, though.
The problem occured because hulu puts interstitial commercials within a program. After the 3rd "segment" of my program, while the commercial was playing, it hung. I couldn't break out without pressing the "Home" button on my remote control and navigation back to the main menu of the hulu channel.
Once I got back to my program, it did not remember where I left off and started me at the very beginning. So, after viewing 25 minutes of a main program with 2 commerical breaks in between, I now am forced to repeat them again.
So, I played along. Low and behold, one of the commercial breaks hung, yet again, and I had to start over one more time.
This definitely needs to be fixed before I'm willing to subscribe.
Can anyone describe how to connect the NX1 to a Wireless G Linksys router without using an eternet cable?:(
Can anyone describe how to connect the NX1 to a Wireless G Linksys router without using an eternet cable?:(
Well, it doesn't have a WiFi transceiver, so it's not possible without some other device that does, like another WAP.
Okay, so I said that kind of "tounge in cheek", but the point is, it can only be connected with an Ethernet cable.

Never mind. I purchased a Cisco gaming adapter and it works flawlessly. In fact, it connected in minutes. :) I have to say that I think this device is worth it if you have an older Sony that can accomodate it. Especially at its current pricing.;)

Not true. See above comment.
I am very satisfied with the DMX-NV1 for movies. Netflix is high def, and its sound is Dolby Digital Plus 5.1. My PS3 will play back the 5.1, but not the DMX-NV1. Anyone know why the DMX-NV1 won't play 5.1? Is there a design limitation?

My NV1 broke, but if I remember correctly you need to use the audio optical out to connect your TV to your receiver. I do know 5.1 works though.

My NV1 says my audio receiver will not accept the audio output. It is an old Bose system but it works fine 5.1 with optical in from TiVo or PS3, just not the NV1.

Are you going from the TV itself to the Bose? That's what you need to do. You can also test if you can get TV channels in 5.1 by hooking an antenna or cable in directly to the TV. That requires being able to tune a digital station (not encrypted).
Not true. See above comment.
Actually, it was true. A third party adapter had to be added to the DMX-NV1 to make it wireless. The NV1 cannot communicate with a WAP on it's own.
So, I accidently logged out of YouTube today (first link on the NV1's YouTube channel).
When I attempted the log back in, the login screen does not have any fields to enter a username or password.
So, to anyone that is not already logged into YouTube: Are you seeing this behavior?
If you are already logged in, DO NOT LOG OUT, you may not be able to get back in again.

I remember that happening once. I believe unplugging the NV-1 and plugging it back in fixed that problem. That or resetting the channels via the menu. I do remember being able to fix it.

Yep. That did it. Thanks!!
Playing the "Space Ballon" video, now.

I can get all the channels (cable and many OTA) in 5.1 (if they are transmitting it) via the optical out on the TiVo. I have an optical switch that I use to switch to the PS3 output and that works fine. I think I tried the optical out on the TV for the NV-1 output but still got the error message. This is an OLD Bose so I am not surprised.
Has anyone noticed that some of the new Crackle ads won't play? If the ad won't play, the featured content is unavailable.
I've tried soft resetting the NV1, and cycling power on the NV1 and my ISP's modem. No change.
