I have a Vizio L37 TV and an Onkyo 605 reciever. I don't have a cable box. I have the red and white cables going from the TV's audio out to the reciever. On the TV ive set it so it sends the audio signal out, but I can't get any sound. Does anybody have any idea what to do? Also when I turn on my speakers the subwoofer makes a sweeking sound.

So just let me make sure I understand. You have a regular coax cable going into the back of your TV, and you have standard RCA cables going from the audio out of the TV to your receiver? This sounds like it should work, but if that's not how it's set up, let me know.

One question I have would be how do you have the audio connected to the receiver? I would guess that you have the audio connected to the TV audio input on your receiver. If that's the case, then make sure your receiver is set to the TV input--otherwise you won't get any sound at all. Another question would be, do you get sound from other components connected to your receiver? If not, check the speaker connections to make sure they are hooked up properly. If these things don't work, let me know exactly how you're set up (the whole setup, not just the TV) and let us know what you've tried. I'll do my best to help!

As for the squeak coming from the sub, that sounds strange. If I know a little more about how everything's set up, I might be able to lend some insight.

Yes, I have the setup you described, i tested the speakers with my xbox and they work fine. The connections are TV audio->Avr video-> TV Xbox->AVR->TV DVD->AVR->TV I unhooked everything and only the TV was connected and I set the receiver to the correct input, so I can't figure it out.
The speakers are the Infinty TSS-1100 package. Let me know if I'm not descriptive enough and thanks for your help.

Ok, that does help--that means the problem probably isn't the receiver, it's probably a setup issue. A couple of possible thoughts. Sometimes it's difficult to see which jacks on the back of the receiver are for which input, so try cycling through the different inputs on your receiver while you have the TV on and see if you get any sound. Another possibility is that the receiver is set to receive digital input. If that's the case, it won't give you any sound when you give it an analog input. Most receivers allow you to select either digital or analog, or auto. Auto is what you want. Those are the two things that come to my mind right off. If I think of something else, I'll let you know. If these don't work, let me know.

Once you figure out how to get sound out of your TV with the analog cables, I'd suggest you give optical a try in order to get surround sound through your receiver.

Of course, I am assuming you have HD channels available on your cable service and can receive them with the set's internal QAM tuner.

There should be a setting on your TV enabling the digital/optical audio output. And you will need to associate the optical input on your receiver with the TV/Cable/DBS source (or whatever Onkyo calls it).

GE,
Your Vizio Tv has two audio outputs. One is optical, the other is the Rca(L/R) jacks.
If you use the 'Rca' outputs, connect them to the 'Game/Tv' input jacks on your receiver. See page 26, they show the connections.
As the others have stated , you have to select the correct 'input source' you are playing. In this case its 'Game/Tv'. You can select the source at the receiver front panel or the remote control. See pg. 54 of your receiver manual.
* Optical output(Tv)........ I believe this is only active when you are using the Tv's ATSC tuner( OTA reception via antenna).

** I think the above setup is correct, from what I read.

Unless the Vizio is different than other sets, the optical output should be operable all the time. It will downmix to stereo outout for non-tuner inputs and feed DD encoding from the set's ATSC (over the air) and QAM (cable) tuners.

You may be correct, but this is what the specification data says........
Not sure how the Qam(cable) tuner works.

Ok, Thank you everyone for your time and help. I finally figured it out. I had to turn the volume up on the TV itself all the way for any audio to come out. Also, does anybody have any idea about my sweeky subwoofer?

When you connect your Tv audio( or other device) to your receiver, you want your receiver's volume control to be the master control. You s/b able to turn off your Tv speakers and control the volume with your receiver's volume control.
I don't think you have your speakers set up correctly as stated in the manual. I suggest you read the manual and go from page one without the Tv or any external devices connected except your speakers.
Your speakers are setup wrong, or your receiver has problems.

Good luck
