I'm looking for a new sub, under $400, for my setup. This is going to be 50/50 movie and music. Has anybody done a comparison between the VTF-1 and the LFM-1 compact?

Those 2 subwoofers are not directly comparable. The LFM-1 Compact only has 1 port. The HSU VTF-1 has 2 ports (so you can change the tuning frequency).

The LFM-1 Compact is comparable to the HSU STF-2.

The LFM-1 Compact may be slightly better looking.
