So I just bought a a pretty decent Polk Setup for my Onkyo 605:
RTI12s, CSiA4 (although debating to switch to a Csi5 as it's recommended with the setup on polk's website), Fxi5, and I picked up the PSW505 sub to match.

From what I understand matching a sub to the speakers is not that important in regards to SQ, just more of a cosmetic thing if anything? Anyway my listening area of the room is only 11x13. when I move the new listening area I will be in I estimate is 12x15..so not much bigger at all. Anyway, I got the PSW505 for $300 although I think I might be able to get them to drop it another $200 after I convince them to price match it. Is there a better sub anyone would recommend for the $300-400 price range? I don't think i'd want to go any smaller than 10" but I do know that 12" may be a bit unneccessary for the size of my living room.

Thanks

Elemental Designs A2 - 300, A3-300 or HSU STF-2.

The A3-300 is over $400 but ED offers free shipping, given that it's still in your price range. FYI, if you do go for one of the ED offerings I've heard they are going to raise prices 1st of the year

Room size doesn't matter when it comes to what YOU want. Someone may find a 10" more than enough, someone else, four 18" subs. Whatever you want.

As to what sub. I recommend either the eD A2-300 or the SVS PB10 or PB12 or HSU 12" subs. Check out Craigs test recommendations http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=9164136#post9164136

Does the ED and/or HSU offer free 30 day trials?

Given my price range..looks like it'd be between the ED A2-300, STF-2...more leaning on the STF-2 because it offers a 30 day trial (im not sure if Elemental Design offers it as well). and the STF-2 looks more appealing cosmetically..which is a factor. Anyone know how those downward firing subs sound on carpeting?

They work fine. If not, simply lean it on the side with driver facing you.
