say someone had two decent 18hz tuned ported subwoofers ...

would buying two 18" sealed subs EQ'ed to play 10-20hz only be a good investment?

notes: I can't IB, I'm dumb at DIY, nor do I want a buttkicker.

Which sealed sub do you have in mind?

A7S-450 ... before it increases in price.

the ported subs I have coming are the eD A7-450's

If you were to EQ the A7S' to play 10-20hz I would co locate them. I'm pretty sure they won't have too much headroom at those frequencies in such a small box, although I could be mistaken. I was going to go with 4x 19 Ov2s in a 5cu ft box each, that modeled to 110db at 10hz.

You could also try plugging a port in each A7-450 for a lower tuning.

i plan to place them nearfield (behind the couch actually), and as budget presents itself, 4 would be the ideal number.

I think you should just upholster them and use them as seating.:p;)

hmmm, now to find a leather upholsterer :p

naah, I like my seats. and I got the space :)

plus, the more space I consume, the less volume there is in the room ...

Mikey, you are simply crazy which is good because it makes me feel so damn normal. :D

it just feels like a downgrade going from a sub that goes to 15hz to a ported sub that's tuned to 18hz ... but alas, tuning to 15hz would require a sub the size of the A7-900.

hey mojo, if you were to pit your DIY vs. your PB13 ... who'd come out on top? :)

plans on getting a second PB13 and then lowering the tuning?

was it noticeable moving from 20hz to 15hz tuning (using movies)?

Just because it's tuned higher doesn't mean it won't have more output at 15hz~.

agreed, but i'm more interested in low distortion output. and IIRC, output below tuning is kinda not that low in distortion.

True that is. As I mentioned earlier, you could try plugging a single port for a lower tune, just like the SVS'.
Personally, I wouldn't go with the extra sealed subs.
I would however, try and find a local carpenter that will build an enclosure cheap. Just provide him with some DIY images (google sketchup images). With my sub I have no regrets, except that I wish I had 3x more for more headroom.

Strong output to 5hz in room. :D

That's my friend next to it, not me.
lol.

you have a point though about just plugging a port or two ...

didn't your friend's arms itch from that fiberglass? or did he think it was cotton candy? :)

did you post your DIY build thread?
(what driver? how many? what size port and length? enclosure volume?)

PB13 in depth and SQ. In absolute SPL, the DIY might put out more sound because of the Behringer EP2500 and no limiter, but at god-knows-what % distortion.

If I didn't already have the DIY, I'd get a second PB13 but I'd most likely still run it at 15hz.

Yes. One scene in particular, near the beginning of "Depth Charged" in "U571" when the depth charges explode near the surface and creat a huge upswelling of the water, the PB13 has more feel in 15hz mode. It doesn't literally sound that different. It's feel is different.

I have a thread floating around somewhere about it. Title was about duals (ended up not having enough money).

Only a single RL-P18 in a 25.some cu ft enclosure. That includes the driver and port. Doesn't include the fiberglass. Tuned to 10.5hz or so. 38" long, 8" wide (inner diameter).
I want 3x more. Just gonna have to wait until I finish up the rest of the system. Gonna need:
1. 3x JBL PT800s or L890s
2. Onkyo 805 or 4x 2ch PA amps (for speakers)
3. 4x more PA amps for sub duty
4. 3x RL-P18s

Plan is to run a single amp for each RL-P18.
I figure this is around a $10k upgrade or so, probably a bit less but just so I don't surprise myself..
lol

thanks for the info mojomike, why didn't you try the 10hz mode and see if there's more of the "feel" difference?

My room is very large and open and I can use the relatively high output that I can get in the 15hz mode.

I see. well then, that settles getting another PB13 :)
