View Full Version : Looking for a comparison between SVS Ultra/2 and the new Ultra 13
naimbeg 12-18-07, 12:30 PM Sorry for the noob question as I don't know how to phrase it?
For the people out there that have heard and are familiar with both the Ultra/2 and the new Ultra 13, what are your opinions/comparisons between the two?
Does the Ultra 13 offer allot more than the Ultra/2?
I was told that the Ultra/2 would provide a little more output but the Ultra 13 would be real close. But the Ultra 13 would be more clear and dynamic.
With all the press for the new Ultra 13, it seems to drawf the Ultra 2, wondering how it stacks up against the Ultra/2 and is there really that big of a improvement.
Thanks.

Static Wick 12-18-07, 02:05 PM The Ultra/2 is more powerful and will pressurize a room easier than the new PB13. The Ultra/2 has 1000 watts and dual TV12 drivers vs. 750 watts and a single 13.5” driver for the PB13.
The new Ultra digs deeper, has more upper bass output, has better SQ, is more efficient and is more musical.
The Ultra/2 has more horsepower (feels stronger) and it’s definitely noticeable. The new Ultra has a sharper and stronger kick and overall it is a better sounding subwoofer.
soundemon 12-18-07, 10:04 PM I've heard the new Ultra 13, and I'd keep my PB12 Ultra, not to mention the ultra/2. IMHO
ggunnell 12-19-07, 12:20 AM Well Soundemon, you are the first person I've heard of to prefer the TV12 to the U13. As a person who went from four TV12's to two U13's, there's a significant improvement in SQ.
Something must have been wrong with the U13 setup you heard: You were sitting in a bad place in the room resonance pattern, the sub controls weren't set right, etc.
Naimbeg, Static Wick gave a good description. I'd add: If all you watch are movie sound effects and all you care about is how loud they are, select as you will. The U13 will make explosions sound more realistic -- not a huge difference but definately noticeable. And on music, the U13 is much better.

I’m surprised by your comments. I’ve done hours of comparisons between the new Ultra and the Ultra/2 and I’m convinced that the new Ultra is better sounding. If it betters the Ultra/2 it definitely will better PB12 Ultra/1.
Were you able to hear both in the same environment?
mojomike 12-19-07, 09:23 AM I've never had the opportunity to compare the 13 with the 12 in listening tests, but as far as objective test results go, there really is no comparison. The 13 is in an entirely different league than the 12.

No, the ultra 12 is in my 12'x14' room, and the 13 I heard in a much larger room, with alot less time and energy spent in positioning and setup. So I am pretty biased. but I do love my Ultra 12...

Solid call. The Ultra/2 is a stronger subwoofer over the mid-bass bandwidth, but the PB13U has a flatter FR and also has superior output linearity across the entire pass band.
Static Wick 02-20-08, 09:36 AM Hi,
Now that I have spent a couple of months with my new PB13 pair, I'm convinced that they are better sounding then my set of twin of Ultra/2's. The PB13's have great SQ and more mid bass kick. They are very smooth, musical and really come alive with my music DVDs. When demoing scenes such as the shoot out in Open Range and the the Rex fight in King Kong the PB13 rules over the Ultra/2's.
Now on the flip side of the coin, I have demoed scenes from movies like FOTF, WOTW & X3 tons of times with both sets and there is a noticeable difference. The Ultra/2's really shakes and pressurized my room beyond the limits of the PB13's. With the Ultra/2's I never ever considered turning my buttkickers on. (They provided all the buttkicking and beyond) The raw horse power of twin Ultra/2's trumps the PB13's in this regard.
bgillyjcu 02-20-08, 09:58 AM Well I hope that 4 woofers would beat 2.
That being said....For the Ultra-13 to be close to or even a little better than a dual sub model is saying ALOT!
I'm thinking LONG and HARD about adding a PB-13 to my system even though I already Have a 16-46+. If I'm going to spend another $900 on a PC+ I might as well spend another $500 and step up to a PB-13. Wouldn't you agree?
OvalNut 02-20-08, 09:59 AM Yes. Brad, you just need to do it.

bgillyjcu 02-20-08, 10:47 AM I wish I could sell my 16-46+ for a good chunk of what I paid for it.
Then use that money to buy a single PB-13. I have a good feeling that it would be enough sub for me and my new HT space. The 16-46+ almost is....So I have a feeling a Pb-13 WOULD BE plenty in 20hz tune...and just right in 15hz mode.
I just read so much about the mid and upper bass reponse and how amazed people are. I kind of feel that is where I'm lacking...the 40-80hz bass...Especially during the Musical tracks during movies...
Besides the bass....a PB-13 would function perfectly as an end table in my new HT. Right now the 16-46+ just stands there like a tower and that limits my ability to even put an end table there....plus if I did it would probably just shake the hell out of it! :)

Please don't misunderstand what I'm saying, I prefer two woofers over the four (most of the time) :D
davidcrowe 02-21-08, 09:23 PM I also turned our transducers off after adding a second /2 to the system. At times we have been concerned about structural damage to the house. The pair of /2s are an amazing addition to the theater and we were lucky to catch them on sale. Thanks SVS!
