Hello,
I have my PS3 hooked up to my Onkyo SR-800 via Optical cable and it has been running fine for a long time up until recently. The sound will cut after a random amount of playing time (be it watching a movie, streaming media, or playing games) for a few seconds and then come back and play normally. A little bit longer and high-pitched noises start coming out of the speakers in short bursts with random intervals. This problem doesn't happen with my HD satelite receiver which is plugged into the SR-800 via RCA cables.

My question is, is the problem more likely to be the source (i.e. the PS3), the cable, or the receiver?

Anything helps,
Thanks a lot!

It sounds like it is a problem with the optical connection but we don't know where. The sounds you describe appear to be the digital decoder losing lock on the signal. Does your Sat receiver have an optical output? If so try connecting it to see if the same problem occurs. If it does the problem may be in your receiver. If it doesn't, it is likely in the PS3 or its cabling. You can try switching cables around to see if that helps. As a side note why would you want to run an HD Sat receiver with RCA cables? Seems you are missing any of the 5.1 digital audio streams.
