Hi,
My JBL sub makes this weird sound whenever it turns on during any DD satellite transmissions or when first starting a DVD. I'm not thrilled by the output either. My family room is 18'X30' and open on one side to the kitchen. My receiver is a Pioneer 1014 and I use Infinity speakers all around in this 7.1 channel system. This room is carpeted and the sub is in the front near one corner. If I change subs what sub under $500 would anyone recommend that would be an upgrade to the JBL?

Thanks, Randy

Randy,

That's a BIG room for that little JBL to try to fill! Anyway, if WAF isn't a big deal and you don't need something that looks like fine furniture, the eD A3-300 can be had for $450 including shipping (you can also upgrade the driver for $30 more). If you want to be sure you have all of the headroom you need and can spend $600, the eD A5-350 is a beast of a subwoofer. SVS and Hsu also make great subs, but the subs they make in your price range will probably be underpowered for a room that size. A couple things about eD - first, they're totally swamped right now, so you're probably looking at a 1-2 month wait, though everyone here will tell you it'll be well worth it. Second, their prices are going up come the first of the year, so if you're going to get an eD, I'd suggest ordering before New Year's Day. Good luck.

Waiting time is more of 4-6 weeks.
I'd order now if I were the OP.

Thanks for the suggestions. I do need to talk to the wife as I just bought a Mitsu 73" DLP, some front speakers, HD-A3 DVD and put in DirectHD. If I order a new sub and get the rrriiiiip noise fixed do you think the JBL sub will sell? It works fine it's just not enough sub.

Thanks again, Randy

Sounds like you have a pretty awesome setup in the making, Randy. Regarding the JBL, if you can get the rip noise fixed it might sell, but to be honest, people probably aren't exactly clamoring for a JBL E250P. If you can get it fixed free or for a very low cost it might be worth it. I doubt you'll get more than about $100 for it, but who knows.

Looking at the rather sizable investment you've put into your HT setup, I think it would really be worth getting the eD A5-350. Talk with the wife and make sure she's ok with it, because it's a very large subwoofer (22.75"H x 21"W x 24.7"D), and the textured black finish might not be very decor-friendly. But for $600 including shipping, you'll be able to fill that large room with powerful, deep, accurate bass - something that would have cost thousands of dollars just a few years ago. Skimping on the bass while having a huge 73" screen would be a shame. If you can afford to do it and the wife isn't really put off by the idea, I'd say A5-350 all the way. Good luck.

Stephen

my JBL makes the same ripping noise when its first turned on, I want to get a big bad sub (or 2) also but first I am saving for my Axiom M80s, right now my mains are radio shack pa speakers with a 15 and a horn in each so you can see why I need new speakers, but one thing is for sure those 15s really move some air in comparison with the JBL sub which is worthless. When I get around to getting a sub I may get an Axiom EP-500 for each side or I may get a new SVS PB13 Ultra for each side.

Thanks Stephan. I'll take your word for it. I think I'll start scouring the house for stuff to sell on Ebay. My wife isn't too opposed to HT purchases if I have some money in my PayPal account. You've been a big help. One more question. What can you tell me about Outlaw subs?? Are there any reputable places to look for pre-owned subs. I've been watching Ebay but it's mostly cheap stuff for sale there.

Thanks, Randy------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, after looking at Outlaw, HSU, Velodyne, SVS, Epik and eD it was easy to make up my mind on the A5-350. It is a lot more subwoofer than anyone else can supply for $600.00. My family room is over 4300 cu.ft and open to the kitchen/dining room on one side that adds another 2900. I have been trying to get by with this little JBL E250P sub that is no where close to doing the job. Can't wait to hear the difference a full room of bass makes in my home theater. Thanks to all of you guys on this forum that helped me make this decision.

The LFM-1 EX is a good subwoofer, pretty comparable to the Hsu VTF3 Mk3, according to many people. At $549 + shipping, it's a great deal right now. It also looks pretty nice. However, for $600 including shipping, the eD A5-350 is considerably more sub for the buck, IMO. It's not nearly as good looking, but if performance is your primary concern, it's an amazing bargain.

Guess I'm a little too slow...posted my remark about the Outlaw a couple minutes after you made your decision...

BTW, you have to let us know what you think once you get it :D

Sounds like (chuffing). Install two JBL 4645C professional, THX approved that will give the room the true sound you’ll looking for, thou one would do the room easily with plenty of rumble kicking slamming jolt lows that will drop down with high sound pressure.:p

Hi, thanks for the comments. I don't think the subwoofer is chuffing. The only time I hear the sound is when it is turning on. It is an electronic sound and it doesn't come from the port. Other than that the sub sounds fine. Just not enough sub for my big room.

If it's being triggered too soon does that mean a problem with the receiver?? I don't live in an area where I can get local help. Probably have to take the sub to either Seattle or Spokane. Either is a 3 hour drive. Also, if this sub is being triggered too soon will my new sub exhibit the same problem??

I have the same sub and while I am working on getting a new sub in the very near future, I need to continue using this one for now. It is going to go into another room or to my brother in law. Just recently I started noticing an odd sound when I turn on the system, sounds more like a squeak than anything... almost like a mouse burped or a rusty door hinge. Any ideas??

Sounds like I have the same problem with this Subwoofer. I was going to post a new thread but found this one. It seems to be the sub goes into sleep mode and when it wakes up it makes this weird sound. If I'm watching TV sometimes the sub doesn't make the noise and come out of sleep mode right away.

Has anybody been able to fix this ? It's not a huge deal but somewhat annoying. It never happened the first year I owned the sub. Happens all the time now.

Look at all your sub wires even you speaker cable. It could be grounding out somewhere. On your receiver or somewhere else. I had this problem with a sub. A "farting" noise out of nowhere. I found a wire touching a piece of metal on my speaker. Once I fixed that it never happened again. Dunno if that would apply to your sub or why mine quit but it did??

I second the 4645c.

I totally lucked out and managed to find someone local selling them used. They're monsters, but I've already Hit > 120db at the listening position at 20Hz....
