This is a recent issue, and I'm not sure why it started.

I moved into my apartment 2 years ago, and setup the system at the time. About a 1 and a half went by before my landlord replaced my A/C unit which is near the sub. However he did not touch the subwoofer, nor any of its connections. Nor have I made any changes to the system. As soon as the new A/C unit was plugged in the sub began to thump very loudly whenever I change modes (DD to 2ch stereo), or the source signal changes (TV input to DVD input) on the Receiver the sub thumbs VERY loudly.

At first I couldn't figure out why, none of the components were disturbed so I couldn't see any reason for the systems behaviour to change. So I thought it could be a feedback or grounding issue and started to chase those items. I changed the shielded cable from the Rx to the sub, thinking that perhaps the cable was worn out, pinched or damaged somehow but the problem remained. Then I tried plugging the sub or Receiver into different outlets on the off chance that there was a grounding issue, no change there either, still thumping.

However none of that, and the sub continues to thump at full volume.

I would appreciate if anyone has some suggestions to figure it out. I'm just about short of re-wiring the entire system, and then if that doesn't work possibly getting a new Receiver as its getting up there in years but still seems to work perfectly.

This is what I have.

Pioneer VSX-D557 (purchased in 97', served faithfully for 10 years)
Velodyne CT-120 sub, its self powered, and connected to the Receiver pre-amp output by a shielded RCA cable.

Both Receiver and Sub are plugged into grounded outlets.

I know these are not the highest quality stuff, and that they are definitely old but I'm not interested in spending any new money on stuff.

Suggestions for trouble shooting it are welcome, its getting really annoying and it can't be good for the sub to be thumping like that. Imagine a single heartbeat, only extremely loud.
