Looking at price and footprint if I were to stack 2 a5-350 vs 1 a7-450, what do you think is the better option? Price and footprint are practically identical, so would stacked a5-350's be better than a single a7-450?

thank

I would like to know what would be better. Right now I have dual HSU 3.3 and I was thinking about stacking them.

Let me add something to the mix

1. stacked A5-350
2. stacked A7S-450
3. single A7-450

It has been posted that a major factor in the cost of the vented 450 is the freight, does that mean we're getting more sub/$$$ with a stacked setup since more of the cost is put into the sub itself and not used for freight??

note also that the A7-450 has more internal volume than two A5-350's, has slightly more power and the driver has a little bit more xmax.

it is also tuned lower. two A5-350's will still have a tuning of 20hz. a single A7-450 is tuned to 17-18hz.

I think when Chris did simulations, it would take almost 3 A5-350s to rival the A7-450 in output below 20hz, but from 20hz and up, the A5-350s should win from extra cone area.

What are your goals, output or extension?

If I HAD to pick, output above 20hz would be my preference over extension below that. It would be used for 100% HT, I can't remember the last time I listened to music. I realize that extension is more important for HT, but this is just my preference due to certain restrictions.

Our house has a very open floor plan; the foyer, dining room, kitchen, living room, hearth room, and breakfast are all basically 1 giant room separated only by columns. I would estimate the sqft around 2000 with 14' ceilings. I realize that pressurizing such a space would require so much woofage (so I'm settling for something acceptable, not earth-shaking) that WAF would definitely come into play, which is also why I'd like something with a small footprint. I'm leaning towards the eD subs because of value and because I have a cabinet-maker buddy who should be able to veneer or paint those subs to look decent. Before anyone suggests, I don't want to get into any DIY projects.

My choices again, were:
1. stacked A5-350 $1200
2. stacked A7S-450 $1600
3. single A7-450 $1300

As Chris posted somewhere in another thread, much of the cost of the ported 450 is due to freight, which might mean it's really only a $1000 sub and the rest of the money is due to freight :(. At the moment I'm leaning towards option #2 due to it having the smallest footprint (hopefully I can hide it in some corner). My main concern with choice #3, beside it having less output above 20hz, is that a large % of its cost would be freight. I know I'm just sounding anal, but these decisions can drive a man insane :). Thanks for all your input.

One more question, can the A7-900 be placed vertically (port firing upwards)? If the answer is yes, it would make my decision even harder :(

Yes.

Does the theoretical graph help at all?

I mean, there is still a reason behind the price on the A7-450 other than just freight.

1) It was actually priced in a way that made sense before the price increase happens.

2) 1 of them still has more potential output from 14Hz~23Hz than even 2 A7S-450's and will beat a pair of A5-350's from about 26Hz and down.

Now, of course, computer model no room gain etc. But still....it's got more potential over about 2/3 octave than the nearest other choice in your list.

Chris, I can tell you that your graph solidifies my decision. I am in the process of finishing my HT in the next two months. Once complete, I am planning to upgrade my subwoofer. Based on all the forum discussions on ED offerings, I believed 2 A7S-450 1300w with an equalizer (which I have) would be a killer set up. Well your graph confirmed this. Even though the graph is simulated, my room is perfect for a sealed subwoofer, since the HT room is completely closed off with sound proof walls.

A completely sealed room will make a pair of those absolutely painful. I want it :)

THANK YOU!! Any chance you can overlay the A7-900 onto that graph :)
