I have a Toshiba 51H84 that I bought in 2005. Lately it seems to have a much dimmer picture. Problem is especially bad with standard cable (doesn't really make much sense I know). HD channels and HD DVD look better and are tolerable, but they also seem dimmer than usual. TV was calibrated with DVE over a year ago and no changes have been made to settings.
Ideas? Quick fixes?

I'm not familiar with that Toshiba but it sounds like you're due for a lamp replacement.
Time for optics cleaning and/or calibration? It worked wonders for my 46H84!

I'd say the optics (mirror and lenses) are dirty and the phosphors are probably starting to age a bit. Look in the "don't dump your CRT RPTV set yet" for a lot of useful info on cleaning the mirror and lenses.

Thanks, will give it a try.
ETA-When trying to search and find how to take apart set and clean optics, the threads that appear to have useful info are like 55+ pages. Anyone care to point me in the right direction?
ETA2- looking inside TV now. Can I safely remove and clean lenses, or am I going to electrocute myself trying to do this?
