View Full Version : SXRD, LED, or DLP
rfosgate 12-21-07, 02:17 PM I know this has been asked before, and I have looked at the answers, but most were from several months ago, and I'm alittle more specific on my comparison. I am very picky about motion blur, so with that in mind. I currently have a Sony KP-51WS500 51 in", I've been pretty happy with it, but would like to jump to 1080p. So I've narrowed it down to Samsung HLT5687SX 56" LED, HLT6176S 61" DLP, and Sony KDS-60A3000 60" SXRD. I can get all three for within less than $100 of each other, so price isn't an issue. And I'm not really THAT concerned about bulb changes, but it is there in the back of my mind. SO Which will give me the best picture quality, or is it essentially a coke vs pepsi decision?

Go down look at both and decide. I like the LED back light on the Samsung HLT5687S never needing replacement or getting dim, also compared to the other two displays its the only one that is instant off and on with no fan noise. But go to the stores and check them out.
Vrenlos 12-21-07, 02:37 PM For what it's worth, SXRD is going to be hard to find very soon since Sony has decided to move on to greener LCD pastures. I personally picked up a 60A3000 about a month ago and love it, and while the xx87 series Samsungs did impress me, I returned 4 separate 5676s units with problems before getting my A3000.
Also, and again the xx87 series isn't affected by this, but the case on the xx76 series of DLPs is complete garbage the screen will bow at the slightest of vibration/pressure (someone walking by can and will make the screen bounce).
mooninite 12-21-07, 04:47 PM Yes, do not do not do NOT get a Samsung XX76S TV. Major picture problems and the bulb blew out on mine in a few months.
Get the XX87 LED model. You'll love it.
rfosgate 12-21-07, 06:01 PM Ok, I see all the good points about the Samsung, and I think I have changed my mind. Plus I think the 56" would fit better than the 60" in my living room. Looks like now I just get to wait on shipping. Thanks for the input guys. Are there any problems with the 87's like the green issue with the sony?
FYI, You are not gonna see a MAJOR jump from 1080I to 1080P. Secondly have you had your Sony CRT Professionally Calibrated? If not I would suggest you look into getting that puppy Professionally done.
A Professionally Calibrated CRT, still gives you a better picture than anything out there except maybe the Pioneer KURO Plasma. No Motion Blur. No SSE. No Rainbow Effect. Also once a CRT is Calibrated Professionally Burn-In isn't an issue.
Here's a thread on why you shouldn't DUMP your CRT

Junkhead 12-21-07, 06:36 PM I just bought my KDS-60a3000 on tuesday and i must say THIS IS WHAT HD IS.
I had a Samsung 5087w which was great also and got great reviews here when i bought it a year or two ago. So i figured i would buy another samsung, beforehand i start reading here as i always do to find out what are the best out there in whatever price range i am searching in. It seems non debatable that the KDS-60a300 or the 50a3000 are the best you can buy for under $2000 by a longshot, and alot of people are saying there are better than the upper end tv's that are over 5k
so i get to CC and start looking around and basically it came down to the 56'LED samsung, the 61" samsung(non led) or the sony a3000.
So i stood there looking back and forth for about 30 minutes and there was this one high def scene (which i think was the only true hd thing shown the whole time) and the sony just was so much better, i mean it was not even in the same league thats how much of a difference there was.
And im no sony lover by any means, this is the first sony product i have owned in probably 15yrs.
rfosgate 12-21-07, 06:44 PM Well, within the last year I had two of the guns replaced, under the extended warranty, so I would have thought they would have calibrated it when they returned it, though I wasn't at the house when it was brought back, so I'm not sure. But a buddy of mine has a 1080p JVC think it was an F#97 and it just looks soo much better than my sony. Just wish I didn't have to wait for the samsung, the Sony I could get at Circuit City right now, and start enjoying. The samsung I have to wait till after xmas. Oh the woes of getting something better I guess.
Junkhead 12-21-07, 06:48 PM CC has a 10% coupon also right now, buy online and pick up in store, or do what i did, tell them theres a coupon online and show them, then you can just buy it instore with 10% off :)
joeblow 12-21-07, 07:16 PM If you have a PlayStation 3 (or plan to get one), then you need a full 1080P HDTV. Your 1080i set won't cut it. As you play games, the fact that the interlaced signal has to be converted to progressive by your current HDTV means input lag will be introduced. A slight delay will be unavoidable, and is most noticable in rhyhm and fast action games that require precise command entry.
For movies and the visual quality of games, it looks exactly the same in 1080i or 1080P.

Sorry but this is not true. I game(xbox 360) on my 57' HITACHI(1080i CRT) & get NO lag what so ever. This is running both 30 & 60 fps games.

If 2 of the guns had to replaced this doesn't meant the TV was Calibrated. Calibration usually means going into the TV's Service Menu & tweaking the Color, Contrast & Brightness. It also would call for a reduction in Image Over-Scan. This is probably Why your friend's JVC D-ILA looked much better.

Tough to beat a crt for blacks and shadow detail and closest to feeling like your at the theater but where the digital displays come through are HD content and a brighter and clearer pic.. The superBowl in HD a dlp-sxrd,anything else really, will blow away a crt. No debate. Hd gaming xbox360 or playstation3 crt also gets blown away by anything else. Even dvd-hddvd-bluray will look more impressive with most scenes besides the very few low light scenes that crt will do better. If movies are most important i wont argue crt is still awesome.. Just dont say it's "as clear" or anything like that :)
rfosgate 12-22-07, 12:40 PM well I went out yesterday set of getting the samsung, but no one had it. CC, BB, sears. NFM has it, but I'd like to get it pricematched to vann's, but they are in montana, so I doubt that will happen. Looks like I still get to wait on shipping.

You're doing the right thing. It's better to wait than get a POS model instantly. The wait will be worth it. :)
The Sony KDS-60A3000 is an easy decision, really. CRT's do look good and have great blacks, but the pros of the A3000 outweigh any cons. CRT's do not look hi-def. They look good, but not hi-def.

jamespranger 01-25-08, 02:41 PM The Sony KDS60A3000 is a great television. Most people have a decision between the 60A3000 or KDL-52XBR4. I bought the 60A3000 and love it. Plus for the value, it can be beat. If you do have the money then KDL-52XBR4 is the way to go since it does have a better picture and looks nicer then the A3000
