I have a bunch of video files on my PC that I'd like to transfer over to the PS3 so I can watch them on my big screen TV with the upscaling to 1080p. I know you need to do something with creating a media server, but I don't know exactly what to do.

I used Red Kawa a while ago, but I remember there were a lot of files that didn't work because they were the wrong format. What is the right format to use to transfer video files? In particular I'm trying to stream avi files with TVersity after applying the PS3 patch, but it still says "unsupported data" instead of showing the avi files.

Doesn't anyone know how to use the PS3 to watch videos? I thought the new update was supposed to add divx and avi support.

I've been using Tversity for streaming, but have yet to transfer files. There are a lot of threads covering the various media servers, etc.

Here is the one on Tversity...

Simplest way? Just get a USB thumbstick and transfer manually...

Yeah, that's the fastest and easiest way if you want it on your PS3 HDD. If not, just use the media server using WMP10.

I did a search and have seen some threads that say to download windows media player or TVersity, but nothing that specifically says how to stream avi files to the PS3. Since the search is my friend, why not show me a link you can find by searching that has a very simple explanation that shows how to stream avi files to the PS3?

When I used my friend the search button, I found this:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/search.php?searchid=8422746&pp=30

None of these threads says what to do if avi files show up as "unsupported data" in the PS3 after using TVersity with the PS3 patch, or any other simple method to do it.

I found this thread, but it has multiple pages so I don't know where to look to find my answer.

I don't understand why someone couldn't simply say to "download program x" or "install update y" instead of ignoring a basic question or just saying to do a search. At the very least tell me what to search for.

The easiest and simplest thing I've used outside of streaming is Red Kawa File Server. You install the app on your pc where your files are located. Then you point your PS3 Browser to the IP address that the Red Kawa App uses and you can download your files from the browser to your PS3 HDD.

Will that work with avi files or do you have to convert them first?

What's a pain is that I can't just leave my laptop on and stream the files to my PS3 so I can watch them in the theater. Instead I have to convert each avi file, which takes forever.

I think the lack of answers is because everyone figures that it is so easy to just move files from your PC to your PS3 that you have to be confused about something.

Download file to PC. Transfer to flashdrive. Transfer to PS3. As long as the file is supported MP4, AVC, DivX, AVI, WMV (without sound), you're good with just doing that.

If you have WMP11 on your PC you can stream the files to your PS3 thru a network by going into library-sharing-turn sharing on. It should recognize your ps3 even if not by name. Once the sharing is turned on search for media servers on your ps3 and it should find WMP11, from there you can select the files youd like to play.

The easiest is just moving via flashdrive the files that are supported or letting a program (like ps3video9) convert them for you and then move them with a flashdrive. I dont like streaming very much because im wireless and I get a not so good connection so I have ps3video9 convert the files to mpeg4 and up the resolution to 1080p and increase the bitrate as high as possible. The end result is SD videos looking much better on my ps3.

Since the new 2.10 patch came out I haven't had to convert any of my avi files since it now supports divx. But I have read that some people are unable to play certain avis.

I tried 3 different tennis matches in avi format and 1 worked perfectly, one shows up but it says the file format is not supported, and one says "unsupported data."

I tried to convert one of the files to mp4 and high quality with ps3video9, but it said it would take about 6 hours.

If the PS3 won't play certain avi files is there a simple way to make the PS3 play it or do you have to completely convert the avi files to another type (like mp4)?

6 hours??? It might be in your best interest to buy a new PC if you want faster video editing results.

But i'll say its probably better that for now now you just run PS3Video9 or some other other video conversion program at night before you go to bed. And then in the morning when you wake up just copy it to a thumbdrive and save it on your PS3 like other ppl have suggested.

The more recent versions of Redkawa's PS3 converter is a hassle to deal with.
There are various alternatives for video encoding for the PS3 (http://forum.doom9.org/forumdisplay.php?f=78), from the top of my head, PS3 supports

AVCHD
VC-1 (through WMV container)
MP4
H.264
DIVX

I have tried most of the codecs with various degrees of success. With the videos stored on the PS3's internal hard drive.

If you wish to transfer a audio or video file to the PS3's hard drive. You will need a file server such as Vilvic (http://www.vilvic.com/downloads.html) Twonky, or Red Kawa's file server If you have any trouble running Vilvic , feel free to ask any questions.

Red kawa works good but I wish the ps3 browser allowed "copy to hard drive" option under triangle for any link. Then you could use it for any file. I run into some files that I can't transfer. It does work great for transferring mp3s and pictures, though.

You may do do so with Vilvic, as long as the format is supported on the PS3
