View Full Version : Help - Which Speakers to Buy
skjerve 12-21-07, 11:25 PM Ok - here is my question. I have pretty much decided on the Onkyo 705. I have read the reviews.....seems good. Now, what should I buy for speakers - I am in Canada, and looking to spend between 1000 and 1500. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thirsty 12-21-07, 11:42 PM If we tell you what speakers to buy and you don't like them then you will hate us....:(
skjerve 12-21-07, 11:47 PM Yes, but I will take all your advice and use it wisely. Any suggestions would be helpful
zworykin 12-21-07, 11:57 PM Buy the speakers that fit your budget and sound good to you.
Really though--what are you looking for? 2.0? 2.1? 5.1? 6.1? 7.1? Floorstanders/bookshelves up front? What kind of surrounds if you're looking for a full setup, bipole/dipole/monopole? In-wall/in-ceiling speakers for any of the positions? How do you plan to use the system most, music or home theater?
Lots of questions to answer before anyone can make a meaningful recommendation ;)
skjerve 12-21-07, 11:59 PM I am looking for 5.1
skjerve 12-22-07, 12:00 AM I am not sure about diopoles and such stuff - but mainly will be used for home theater, some music, lots of sports and movies

tmterrill 12-22-07, 12:21 AM With advice just find the middle ground :). For speakers in that price range there are a lot of options. The best way to find what speakers to get is to go out and try them for yourself. Take some of your favorite music to a dedicated A/V store, if they are a quality store they will let you listen to your music on different systems. Ideally you should find what speakers are in your general area you can tryout for yourself. Take into consideration what the speakers are hooked up to though, one might have a great amp hooked up to it, and another speaker wont. Personally I would not get speakers I have not heard before in a decently fair comparison to others I am considering. Even if a speaker is highly regarded and has sparkling reviews does not mean it suits you best. Anyone can only point you in the right direction with audio because there are so many great speaker brands. If the speakers you like sound great to YOU compared to reference speaker brands like Paradigm and B&W then by all means get those, but again there are so many good speakers that there are no "universal" best buys for each price range. So in short go to an A/V store that has many different "good" speakers and decide what YOU like best.
Oh, if there are no A/V stores near you...thats a different story and more information is needed to accurately recommend speakers for you. Room size, music listened to, music, movie, or game inclined, ect.

PR Audio 12-22-07, 12:29 AM TM is absolutely right, and you live in Canada the home of many great speaker manufacturers like PSB, Paradigm, Energy, etc. When you said, where can I buy I took it more as, where can I audition.
Forget about postal codes...Every manufacturer has an area on their website to find dealers in your area. This is for Paradigm, PSB, and Energy:

skjerve 12-22-07, 08:57 AM All great advice, thank you. However, are there any model numbers, maybe from paradigm that one would suggest?
Among the others already mentioned, you might consider Axiom (http://www.axiomaudio.com/). They're a Canadian company.
skjerve 12-22-07, 03:19 PM Can somebody tell me if they would recommend Paradigms in this case - I am thinking the cinema series
pumbaa071 12-22-07, 03:26 PM paradigm make some really nice speakers i think. of course im dont always like the most expensive/coolest things i think they have a nice sound to them and never have had a problem out of mine. of course i only had the atom monitors before i sold them.
PR Audio 12-23-07, 10:32 PM I auditioned Monitor Audio Radius 225, Klipsch RVX-42, and Paradigm Cinema 330. All are on-wall models. Klipsch was immediately discarded as an option, it was either MA or Paradigm. IMO, Paradigm was better, as they were more dynamic than MA, which was more musical, and these were going to be used mainly for HT. With on walls you definitely need a sub, and their sound is not like towers of the same price. In the same price range you can buy a superior set of towers.
But, if you are looking for on-walls I would go with the Paradigm Cinema 330 or MA Radius 225, bu you need to audition.
