Is there a way to always have the speakers set to "off" but only on a given video input? I run HDMI from my dvd player for video only (no HDMI receiver yet), and each time I play a dvd I have to go into the TV's audio setup and turn off the TV's speakers so that my stero system alone plays back the sound. (I am close to buying an HDMI receiver just to avoid this inconvenience, whcih is sort of silly.) I don't want to have the TV's speakers always set to "off" because I do use them for just watching TV.

And as a corollary to this, is there any degradation in sound quality, timing, etc. by doing this, i.e., by (as I imagine it in my non-engineer's brain) routing picture and sound to the TV via the HDMI cable, and then having the sound signal cut off when it gets to the TV, and rerouted, as it were, to the receiver?

Thanks for any replies!

The fast answer is no, speaker on/off is not set by video input, it is set for the all inputs.

I am curious to know what situations you do not want the sound coming from your receiver. I always have the TV speakers off, and the sound coming from my receiver.

When simply sitting down to "watch TV" I usually don't feel enough of a need for better audio to power up the receiver, make sure it is set to the correct input/output, etc. It's probably less of a hassle than I imagine it to be.

One option is to get a harmony remote. The TV has an on/off code for the speakers so with a press of a button you can toggle the speakers on and off. One advantage of the A2000 over the A3000 is that ability to easily toggle the speakers on and off at the touch of a button for different applications. The remote can also be programmed to do it automatically depending on activity selected, but the area to add on and off commands can be hard to find.
