View Full Version : Is it worth going to 7.1 in this case?

Hi,

I am currently using some in-ceiling speakers as my surrounds in a 5.1 setup. They are mounted in a 12 foot ceiling and I am actually rather happy with the sound from them. Other than being in the ceiling they are in what appears to be a perfect location in relation to the viewing position (next to L/R, a little behind)

I am upgrading my receiver and have been considering adding two more speakers to get a 7.1 set up. The problem is that I can NOT put speakers on/in the wall for the surround rears. They would have to go in the ceiling. There are doors, corners, windows on that wall that make in walls impossible. It is also a traffic path to another room and that make on-wall impossible as we would be running into the things constantly.

So....are in ceiling mounted speakers worth adding for 7.1? If so, what would you recommend for app $200/pair?

Lastly, any recommendations to replace the current in ceiling speakers? I have no idea what brand/model these are although I will bet they aren't a "good" set as they were put in by the builder and he didn't advertise specs on them.

So....are in ceiling mounted speakers worth adding for 7.1?Sure, as long as you place them well behind the listening area, so that sounds from behind you are distinct and separated from sounds at your sides.
