I've wondered about this for the last couple of years or so. I have a 6 year old Toshiba 65H81. Has anyone else gone from a set like this to 1 of the newer ones that came out in the last year or so? If so, are they glad they did, curious to hear from some people out there....

Thanks!

Thanks!Look at it this way, your CRT RPTV is really a huge 720P 16:9 display supporting 1080i with a 26" depth. You can get a new 60 to 65" RPTV supporting 1080P with HDMI inputs to watch HD movies (HD-DVD or Blu-Ray) that is only about 15" depth. The picture will be brighter, more intense colors, no convergence issues. Once you see how sharp the picture is, you will get rid of your older CRT RPTV, I did! ;)

Popular models similar to your size, are the Samsung 6187s/6189s LED DLP models, the Sony 60A3000 LCOS SXRD model, and the Mitsubishi WD-65734 DLP model.

Are you really serious?

What do you think all the owner threads with specific model #'s in the title are about?

Yes, there are hundreds if not thousands of threads in the last 2 years where owners discuss their new sets & how it is better or worse than their old set.

Read some of the owner threads from the models you are interested in to see the owners thoughts, pros & cons over their old sets. also look at the "Don't dump your CRT RPTV!" thread

Thanks guys for the replies. Those sets you had mentioned John were some of the set's ive been following very closely for the last 6 months or so and the ones I'd been contemplating moving up to. I was kind of hoping for a straight to the point cut and dry response from others such as myself with older tv's. Looking through all those topics you get very over whelmed with all the responses going all over the place, so I wanted to just cut to the chase and get a definitive "yes" or "no" answer. Maybe I should have also added a poll to my topic. Looking forward to more responses from others who had been in my particular situation and actually done something about it!! Thanks again guys :)

I bought my Mitsu in mid November and it has the fan humming noise. I have been ignoring it but it is still noticeable at normal volumes and in adjacent rooms. I've read several newer posts from people that have purchased sets made in December '07 , and they say they have no fan hum at all.
Does anyone know if there is a fix for this noise?? I know the ferrite bead fix for those that had the ballast noise but haven't heard anything regarding the fan humming. I know it's the fan because it continues for about 30 seconds after turning the set off then quits.

Thanks, Randy:o

Sorry Randy I don't know the answer to your problem. I hope you find out though. It may help if you start your own thread though on this. Thanks... :)

Nobody here has upgraded from a 6 year old or so TV to a tv that came out in the last year or so?!?!

I'm being serious when asking for opinions on this. I looked through at least half those threads in the KDS-XXA3000 thread and the 65HM167 thread and also the Mitsy threads. I also looked through the Don't dump your CRT thread. A hugh portion of those threads doesn't even go into any detail on owner's opinions on their old set as oppoed to their new set.

I think my 6 year old TV looks great. I've seen some of the newest sets in stores and all I can think of is "Jeez, 6 years later and it seems as though PQ hasn't gotten much better in all this time?" The new sets that I've seen don't seem very good. In fact they seem worse PQ wise. I know that RPTV viewing in a store will not give u the best idea of how good a set looks.

This is why I'm asking for opinion's here. I really don't want to actually have to buy a new set just to find out if I will be happy with the picture quality difference.

I have read that some of the newer sets can't touch what the older CRT's can give you such as black levels for 1 thing.

Also considering that the Don't Dump Your CRT Thread seems to have more posts than all the the other threads, seems to suggest that "Hey, maybe I should keep my 6 year old TV, since so many people seem to be happy with their old outdated sets"

Anyways, my thread here has gotten over 200 views in the last few days, and it's gotten only 1 comment on an owner who said I should make the jump.

I started this thread just in the hopes that I could get some input from others who have upgraded.

Even a simple "Yes" or "No" Would be GREAT!!!! :)

AM I THE ONLY PERSON ON THIS ENTIRE SITE WHO IS UNSURE IF THEY SHOULD UPGRADE THEIR TV??!?! :o

AGAIN THANKS!!!!!!!!

It seems you want others to make the decision for you.....
If you can't see a definite improvement in PQ in sets you have previewed, it seems the decision has been made.

You could be adventurous-- buy a new one, compare at home to your CRT, like it keep it. don't like it, return it.

Now that wasn't difficult was it? :)

Thanks for your reply :)

I wouldn't say I want someone else to make my decision for me, that would be rather foolish ;)

It's just that like I had said before, you cannot get a good idea on how good PQ is on a set in a store due to various reasons. This is pretty common knowledge. You need to tweak the set and all that to get the most out of that picture. Plus in the stores who knows how crappy a video feed that set is getting with, with it also having been on the same feed as who knows how many other video sources.

And also I am not the adventurous type, buying a TV just to see if I might like it is not exactly my cup of tea.

Thanks for your reply, but I am still hoping to hear some actual constructive feedback...

Thanks.

My suggestion is as follows.
Since you cannot judge a set in the store, why not just ask folks on the avsforums if you can go see their set ?
Post in the A3000 main thread if thats what you are considering.
Tell them the state and city you live in and see if anyone offers to have you come by with your reference DVD which you know inside and out.
Take over a bottle of wine as a thank you gesture .
Voila, you get your peace of mind and YOU make the decision based on your facts rather than on others opinions . Your existing set may be fantastic, but you need to get this out of your system.
You got the "I gotta have a new TV-itis" its hit many here and its going around the country.
Good Luck.
There are many here who would love to show off their new sets.

Thanks Lex. That was a very thoughtful and thoroughly explained post with alot of good constructive feedback.

I had no idea it would be so difficult to get an opinion from someone though on a newer set VS an older set LOL.

I live in a pretty remote area though. That's part of my problem.

There's TONS of posts about people voicing their opinions on certain sets and all that. It's just hard to find any posts on people saying their so glad they upgraded to a newer set.

The obvious answer I would think would be yes. Because anything newer has got to be better right? But I haven't seen many posts to support this theory.

All I'm looking for in this thread is for posts from people who upgraded from an older set to a newer set and how happy they were or weren't that they did.

That's it. Thanks.

That's it. Thanks.Who isn't pleased when they replace their older display with a better display? (not counting defective displays)

Do you want to create a poll that asks is my new display better then my old display? :D

If you think the time is right for a updated display then simply do it! You got a older 720P/1080i CRT display, if you want to wait for it to die (another 5 years to go) then your decision is made, otherwise in six years time displays have evolved and improved since you last purchase.

It gets down to this question, are you happy with your current display?
