View Full Version : 2008 upcoming HD-DVD titles
GameOver 12-23-07, 01:27 PM I hope at the 2008 CES we get major anouncements on all studio titles and release dates for 2008 including new and catalog titles.I have everything i want currently available right now with Blade Runner being my lastest HD-DVD purchase.
Jay Mammoth 12-23-07, 01:34 PM I can't wait for Walk Hard The Dewey Cox Story, went to see this on Friday and it was hilarious. It looks like it bombed at the BO so hopefully it will be out around Feb.
Bob Black 12-23-07, 01:44 PM I can't wait for Walk Hard The Dewey Cox Story, went to see this on Friday and it was hilarious. It looks like it bombed at the BO so hopefully it will be out around Feb.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but it's a Sony title thus Blu-Ray only.
Personally, I can't wait for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Raging Bull, Beowulf, American Gangster, Braveheart, I Am Legend, The Golden Compass, and I really hope Poltergeist gets the go-ahead after the tease this past year!
Damnationdoormat 12-23-07, 01:47 PM I'm hoping Paramount steps up and starts releasing more (as in a helluva lot more) catalog titles.
Day-and-dates are "more important", but not when they release a few here-and and-there over the span of months and you have no interest in those few. Like The Heartbreak Kid, Into the Wild, and Things We Lost in the Fire, one big yawn from me.

Whichever it's on, "Sweeney Todd" is a must-own on HD media!!!!
Damnationdoormat 12-23-07, 02:13 PM Whichever it's on, "Sweeney Todd" is a must-own on HD media!!!!
HD DVD-only.
Jarrod_38 12-23-07, 03:42 PM I hope we get some info on a Scarface, The Godfather trilogy
Jay Mammoth 12-23-07, 04:46 PM Sorry to burst your bubble, but it's a Sony title thus Blu-Ray only.

Darn for some reason I thought it was Paramount.
I think the biggest HDM release for 2008 is going to be The Dark Knight, and I really hope Gladiator is released.
Lets hope we get:
1. HEAT
2. Gladiator
3. Saving Private Ryan
My favorit :D

ilovenola2 12-24-07, 11:12 AM HD DVD-only.
I must have it as well.... but as an HD-DVD import. No combo for me!
The movie is brilliant.
elwood49 12-24-07, 11:24 AM I'm hoping Paramount steps up and starts releasing more (as in a helluva lot more) catalog titles.
That's my biggest wish for '08 as well. I really want Chinatown, Braveheart, Nashville, Saturday Night Fever, etc.
Godfather, Indiana Jones, and others would just be icing on the cake. Those are the REALLY big titles that are controlled by their respective directors so we'll probably have to wait longer on them. Maybe we'll see some movement when Indy 4 comes out on video next fall.
Damnationdoormat 12-24-07, 11:25 AM I must have it as well.... but as an HD-DVD import. No combo for me!
Paramount/Dreamworks doesn't seem to do combos, except for the Star Trek set.
jorgerod 12-24-07, 12:00 PM IRON MAN!!!!!
Nuff Said
Jorge
I just hope we dont see a 2-3 month slow down in releases like we did last year after the holidays.
anavrin0901 12-24-07, 02:57 PM Do you really think they will put Indy 4 on any hi def format? I have this feeling they will release this on SD DVD only since George Lucas is involved with it.
Now...here's hoping Iron Man will rock!
sunnysky 12-24-07, 03:28 PM I personally think Sweeney Todd will be a huge hit. So are 85% on metacritic, and 8.7 on IMDB.
I just hope we actually DO get some announcements this year at CES. I can still remember the "No Show" by HD-DVD studios at last years CES. It was a complete embarassment with BD announcing title after title, and HD-DVD just sitting on their hands.
SteveMo 12-24-07, 03:31 PM There is some hope for Indy to be at least an HD version due to the info on Amazon's website for the Star Wars Trilogy to be on Blu-ray.
Star Wars Trilogy (Episodes IV - VI) [Blu-ray] (http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Trilogy-Episodes-IV/dp/B000PMLFRA)
Here is the one for Indiana Jones
The Adventures of Indiana Jones - The Complete Movie Collection [HD DVD] (1984) (http://www.amazon.com/Adventures-Indiana-Jones-Complete-Collection/dp/B000NQREA0******sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1198528080&sr=1-8)
BerserkerTails 12-24-07, 03:50 PM Hellboy 2: The Golden Army. That's going to be awesome. If the transfer for it is as good as the BD of the first one, that'd be way too great.
00 agent 12-24-07, 03:53 PM I can't wait for Walk Hard The Dewey Cox Story, went to see this on Friday and it was hilarious. It looks like it bombed at the BO so hopefully it will be out around Feb.
I could see why. It looked horrendously stupid (IMO) in the previews. Not a movie I'd spend $2 seeing, much less the $8-10 at the BO.
Iron Man, I am Legend, Beowulf, Cloverfield, Saving Private Ryan, Godfather Trilogy, Scarface, Back to the Future Trilogy, and 10,000 BC are what I hope comes out in 2008. Although, according to the trailer for 10,000 BC, it doesn't seem like it's coming out for thousands of years ;)

For the 35,783rd time, Amazon "in the future" placeholders mean absolutely nothing.
dkwhite 12-24-07, 05:28 PM I personally think Sweeney Todd will be a huge hit. So are 85% on metacritic, and 8.7 on IMDB.

It was a fantastic movie (saw it yesterday). And I hate musicals.
TV Casualty 12-24-07, 07:50 PM While I would love to see pretty much all of what people are wishing for above, I think a lot of people are in for a pretty big disappointment. CES isn't really a show for announcing new titles - although the Blu-Ray side has used it for this in the past - it's hardware-centered. I just really hope the HD DVD side has learned from their mistakes of last year. Those who have been here since last CES will remember half the forum ready to bail out on HD DVD after the absolutely paper-thin press conference.
The one thing they absolutely MUST avoid is another February-April drought like they had last year. Extended periods of no content will kill the format faster than any Blu-Ray price drops or studio exclusivity announcements would.
quickfire 12-24-07, 08:11 PM LOTR TRILOGY...........drooooolll
King Jeff 12-24-07, 08:21 PM All I need is Heat, Scarface, and The Godfather. Oh, and Amadeus.

The Incredible Hulk
Hellboy II: The Golden Army
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
The Heartbreak Kid
Bee Movie
Beowulf
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Cloverfield
Iron Man
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Madagascar 2

Not to mention some really good upcoming WB movies like Dark Night for example :)
I hope for LOTR trilogy, Blade trilogy, Gladiator, Braveheart, Heat and a few ones I can't think of right this second..
rover2002 12-24-07, 09:34 PM I just hope we dont see a 2-3 month slow down in releases like we did last year after the holidays.
+1
The start of 07 was plain crap.
What ever happend to Star Trek? (1,2,3,4)
calikarim 12-25-07, 01:29 AM Paramount please release Saturday Nite Fever Hd
Jaws would be nice the trilogy in Hd
\
Yes Jurassic Park
Lets hope we get:
1. HEAT
2. Gladiator
3. Saving Private Ryan
+1
SanDiegoinHD 12-25-07, 01:43 AM Let's see...my wishlist for 2008 (not including what will be new releases)
In no particular order
Master and Commander
Saving Private Ryan
Heat
Braveheart
I, Robot
Band of Brothers
Lord of the Rings Trilogy (Even better would be EE)
Jurassic Park
Indiana Jones Trilogy
Star Wars (all 6, but better would be IV, V, and VI)
Shrek 1 and 2
On and on...
Matt Hoss. 12-25-07, 01:59 AM A lot of good movies on my wishlist have already been mentioned. A few that haven't:
Superman I & II theatrical cuts
Seven
The Lost Boys
Twin Peaks Collection
Lost Highway
Singin' in the Rain
True Romance
Once Upon a Time in the West
Paramount and Universal really need to get there acts together. Titles like Timecop and the upcoming Fletch aren't going to help HD DVD win the format war.
UlumaProDave 12-25-07, 02:01 AM Gladiator
Scarface
Braveheart
Iron Man
The Mummy 3
Hellboy 2
Cloverfield
JP 4
The Incredible Hulk
Creature From The Black Lagoon
American Gangster
Beowulf
These are BIG films which HD DVD was lacking in 2007. So If I were the BDA I would be a little concerned with such big titles that could all be out by the end of 2008. This will also confuse the casual consumer who will have bought only a Blu-ray player. Retail sales people will be saying "sorry it's only only on HD DVD" the consumer will respond back "but I thought Blu-ray is the best" or "nobody told me about which studios are supporting which format" Now I know this can be said for big films that have come out on Blu-ray in the past few months. But this year could be HD DVD's year.
I would like to see New Line release the Blade trilogy on HD DVD in 2008.
Deepsky4565 12-25-07, 04:35 AM I'd love to see The Ten Commandments from Paramount, one of my favorites, and definitely could use more resolution than DVD.
p0tempkin 12-25-07, 07:41 AM JP4 has no theatrical release date.
Instead of "wishlists", maybe you guys should look at the actual HD-DVD release calendar for the first few months of 2008. (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=952823)
I'll sum it up: not a pretty picture.
mumbles3k 12-25-07, 11:08 AM Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair
Jarrod_38 12-25-07, 01:14 PM Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair
Right after Hell freezes over.
narcopolo 12-25-07, 09:09 PM How about some high def exclusives (not available on dvd) such as Looking For Mr. Goodbar, Teachers and the Criterion version of Carrie.
Rainier2 12-26-07, 02:12 AM Aliens (never gonna happen)
I am Legend
Jurassic Park
Back to the Future Trilogy
Indiana Jones'
Tons more..
Sporadic 12-26-07, 02:17 AM The Unbearable Lightness Of Being (all on one disc)
The Ten Commandments
Lost Highway
Grindhouse (Theatical/complete cut)
Planes, Trains & Automobiles
Give me those 5 movies, and this year will be the best one ever for me.
mcneilms 12-26-07, 08:50 AM Anything 70mm or 65nn Also, anything with Technicolor (it should really POP).
Gone with the Wind
10 Commandments
Lawrence of Arabia
South Pacific
Ben-Hur
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Battle of the Bulge
Patton
Cleopatra
Far and Away
PS - Some of these may already be out. I didn't check.
Besides some of the expected day to date stuff like Iron Man, Kung Fu Panda, Cloverfield, 10,000 BC, Speed Racer (if they all end up delivering as great movies that is), I'm also hoping to buy some more great exclusive catalog stuff (some of which has, and some of which hasn't been hinted at thus far) this year, like American Pie 1 & 2, Gladiator, Braveheart, Shrek, Scarface, Private Ryan, The Ring, Jaws, etc -- and from the neutral studios...I hope if they don't release these (rather have THAT happen of course ;)), I hope we at least hear them officially scheduled, stuff like LOTR, Se7en, The Outlaw Josey Wales, Shawshank (c'mon WARNER), etc...wishful list, I know, but maybe 2008 is THE YEAR the studios FULLY get behind next gen disc movies and start putting out their very best titles. :::crosses fingers:::
KidNiki 12-26-07, 12:01 PM Ok, last year was deffinetly Blu-Ray's year in the theater with the releases of such big movies as Pirates III, Simpsons, Spiderman 3, and more. Well this year, THIS YEAR, 2008 IS HD-DVD's year theatricaly for sure!
Ok, here is what I can see please add to this, but I am pretty excited about the awesome releases comming!
Sweeny Todd
Cloverfield
Horton Hears a Who
The Spiderwick Chronicles
Iron Man
The Incredible Hulk
Hellboy II The Golden Army
Where the Wild Things Are
Star Trek
Indi 4 (but who knows what will happen with this since its from good Ol Steve)
I am sure that I have missed some here and its not to say that Blu-Ray has some good looking stuff comming too but IMHO HD is stronger right now...
cnikirk 12-26-07, 12:25 PM These are certainly high profile releases that are sure to sell a lot of tickets. I'm not sure how many of them will actually be good films.
I would say Indy 4 is a pretty safe bet, and Sweeny Todd is nice.
KidNiki 12-26-07, 12:29 PM hmmmm
MohaimenK 12-26-07, 12:30 PM Hoping for Back To The Future Trilogy on HD DVD
jefe noche 12-26-07, 01:49 PM Se7en
Boogie Nights
Gladiator
Scarface
Braveheart
Iron Man
The Mummy 3
Hellboy 2
Cloverfield
JP 4
The Incredible Hulk
Creature From The Black Lagoon
American Gangster
Beowulf

How awesomely one-sided. I'm sure BD has no big titles coming out in Q1 let alone all of 2008.
P.S. For the person who said Master and Commander, you realize this an HD-DVD thread right?
UlumaProDave 12-26-07, 05:01 PM [QUOTE=Amon37;12591472]How awesomely one-sided. I'm sure BD has no big titles coming out in Q1 let alone all of 2008.
Yes it is one-sided, and it is something I could not say at the same time last year. I have looked at what could be coming out for both sides in 08, and the HD DVD side looks very good compared to Blu-ray. Now all this being said I do have a PS3 also, I just would rather see Toshiba do well. Besides, this battle between Sony and Toshiba helps bring prices down, and create BOGO deals for us consumers.
gmoney80 12-26-07, 05:43 PM Basically everything people have said but i am really looking forward to I am legend and braveheart.

Absolutely zero disks there I would want.
punkyqb9407 12-26-07, 06:22 PM 4 Movies 2 Wait 4
1. Braveheart

3. Scarface
4. Godfather Trilogy.
Everything else would be gravy !!!
gmitran 12-26-07, 08:02 PM Looking forward to The Pianist (1/8), hopefully the transfer is going to be very good.

I think 2008 for HD-DVD is going to depend on these and other catalog releases mainly from Paramount And Warner the most.I did not list any other companies but the the four here as you can tell.Hope to see alot of these released in 08 for HD DVD!
tkbryant 12-27-07, 01:59 AM It's pretty much give & take for both sides...however HD-DVD is in a much better position out of the gates this year as opposed to last year and they have alot of high profile exclusive summer tent-pole films under their belt.
Indiana Jones 4 is of particular interest. It is Paramount but it's also a Spielberg film. Could this be a non day & date release or will we see it released on both formats? That one will be interesting.
I'm really hoping for Gladiator & Braveheart. Come on Paramount, the new master for Braveheart is all set & ready to go HD!
random tek hed 12-27-07, 07:06 AM We need One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest yesterday. I've seen it about a million times on HD cable, so I wonder why it is taking so long.
Forrest Gump=same
The official list is just plain yuck. No classic catalog titles whatsoever.
sambow87 12-27-07, 10:12 AM I really want Atonement and There Will Be Blood for 2008. I can't wait!
Rainier2 12-27-07, 01:20 PM Does anyone know if Aliens is distributed by Studio Canal in Europe?
mva5580 12-27-07, 01:53 PM I'm not even going to name specific titles but all i have to say is that BOTH Blu-Ray and HD-DVD damn well better start coming out with the big catalog titles starting this coming year.
DVD was the same thing in the first year, mostly all catalog movies that most of the public doesn't care to buy with good releases here and there.
GET THE GOOD STUFF OUT. You have so, so many people who want to spend money on these discs, but I'm sorry there are just not very many titles out right now that I care about actually purchasing. Especially Blu-Ray. I own like 20+ HD-DVD's, and like 4 Blu-Ray's. And one of those was free.
Malcolm_B 12-27-07, 01:59 PM I'm not even going to name specific titles but all i have to say is that BOTH Blu-Ray and HD-DVD damn well better start coming out with the big catalog titles starting this coming year.

I'm not worried. I think the titles will be revealed at CES. Didn't Universal announce most of theirs at last years event?
StimpsonJCat 12-27-07, 04:30 PM Zodiac: Director's Cut (Paramount)
Elizabeth: The Golden Age (Universal)
Into the Wild (Paramount Entetainment)
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (Warner)
Beowulf (2007) (Paramount)
Appleseed Ex Machina (Warner)
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (Image)
Twister (Warner)

Ugh. What a terrible list, the only movie that I would actually be interested in buying is a BR exclusive in Man on Fire. I'd probably pick up Beowulf as well.
What happened to American Gangster? When's the release date on that?
Otis Widlflower 12-27-07, 05:08 PM I just hope we dont see a 2-3 month slow down in releases like we did last year after the holidays.
Well after the big promo push this season, not striking while the iron is hot would be.. Cataclysmically stupid?
(but not surprising, alas.)
ObTopic: _Scarface_ anniversary edition plz. And _Team America: World Police_ fer fuxake already!!
Otis Widlflower 12-27-07, 05:09 PM I could see why. It looked horrendously stupid (IMO) in the previews. Not a movie I'd spend $2 seeing, much less the $8-10 at the BO.
That's not a bug, that's a feature.
It's not as good as _Anchorman_, more along the lines of _Talladega Nights_. Probably have an equally-insufferable commentary track as well :/
ragar01 12-27-07, 08:56 PM Ok, last year was deffinetly Blu-Ray's year in the theater with the releases of such big movies as Pirates III, Simpsons, Spiderman 3, and more. Well this year, THIS YEAR, 2008 IS HD-DVD's year theatricaly for sure!

Wow, I never thought I would hear the phrase "not as good as Anchorman" uttered! :p At weak moments, I actually enjoyed some of his movies, but that one I gave up on about halfway through.
Konrad63 12-28-07, 08:07 PM I'd like the original Cinerama movie the 3 camera flying coast to coast tour remastered to HDM.
What I know is coming in May is Twister and it's pre-ordered on Amazon.
TV Casualty 12-28-07, 08:22 PM I'm not worried. I think the titles will be revealed at CES. Didn't Universal announce most of theirs at last years event?
Next to nothing was announced at the last CES. In fact, if you were on AVS in January of this year, you would have seen people by the dozen ready to abandon the format because Blu-Ray's annoucements (read: Blu-Ray's hype) just completely slaughtered HD DVD.
Now that things have shaken out a bit, it's obvious people overreacted. However, they can't afford another showing like that again. I hope they are not stupid enough to just do another casual presentation with a few hardware tidbits like last year. I know CES isn't really a "software" show, and I know HD DVD has done a pretty weak job of promotion for themselves thus far...but they must step it up for CES.
Everyone pretty much mention any and every movie I could want on HD DVD. But one question: I thought films directed by Steven Spielberg were excluded from the Paramount/DreamWorks HD DVD deal. So wouldn't that exclude Saving Private Ryan?
FYI, Amazon already has a listing for LOTR, but alas no release date:
http://www.amazon.com/Lord-Rings-Trilogy-HD-DVD/dp/B000E1MTX6
Tes7769 01-04-08, 01:44 PM If anyone paid attention to MOST of the decent movies that were released this past Christmas season, the better portion of them were put out by Universal,Time, and Paramount /Dreamworks.Disney/Touchstone had a few nice releases also(Enchanted,National Treasure 2,TheWater Horse) but for BR exclusive companies besides them, the movies that were released were disappointing(AvP Requiem, anyone?)and few and far between.
The Golden Compass
Sweeney Todd
Fred Claus(i liked it)
Atonement
I am Legend(HD-DVD and BR release)
PS I Love You(HD-DVD and BR release)
Charlie Wilson's War
American Gangster
Bee Movie
Beowulf
Bucket List(HD-DVD and BR release)
August Rush(HD-DVD and BR release)
Awake
Things We Lost in the Fire
Cloverfield
Iron Man
Those 2 will be HD-DVD exclusive and out in 2nd half 2008.
Those are just a small list(all but 4 HD-DVD exclusive).BR has a few nice releases as well, but nowhere near the quality of HD-DVD for 1st half 2008 imo.All of the flicks i listed will show up on HD-DVD's(in a few cases BR also)release schedule, probably during or shortly after CES this coming week.
Imo the HD-DVD owners have an impressive list of movies to look forward to in the next 6 months and beyond.Just because it's not on DVD Empire's future release schedule yet doesn't mean it won't be very shortly.

seeing that list, HD-DVD still has a good lineup even without Warner.
Nice site:)

Blacklac 01-30-08, 12:55 PM I'll be blind buying Cloverfield, Iron Man, and American Gangster. Also picking up I Am Legend from that list.
I agree, thats a pretty nice list of movies for all the complaining we read about "nothing being released".

I'm with you. I have quite a few titles in the next couple months I've ordered. I just ordered 5 titles from WHV (yeah, yeah, I know) and 6 from Amazon yesterday. I'm stoked and broke.
I don't understand going exclusive. I'd think they would sell more total copies producing on both formats reguardless of incentives given to them.

Several of the movies in that list will not be released on HD DVD now. Note the day of the post (Jan. 4), which is pre-Warner annoucement.
The Golden Compass, Fred Claus, P.S. I Love You, Awake (Weinstein), and The Bucket List all will most likely not be on HD DVD. Granted, I won't be buying any of those, but let's keep the facts straight. ;)

I believe The Golden Compass has been confirmed as a Blu-ray Exclusive.
